Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the advantages of students’ intellectual diary (ID) to overcome the major problems of the inadequate competencies of the students in the learning process. For at least 2 years teaches literature subjects in English Education Study Program (EESP), the writer found that most of the students tend to be passive in the classroom. It caused by their lack of motivation to read the material based on the topic discussion, in the meantime the syllabus and teaching material already given to the students. Consequently, as a compulsory, all students should read the teaching material as proved by their ID in handwriting form based on the topic of discussion. The writer adapts this method based on the experiences when studied in UGM. This method increases students’ readiness toward subject in the teaching process. The formulations of the ID become a source of information to the students. Thus, students can give their arguments related to the topic because they already studied earlier rather than waiting what will explained by the lecturer. Furthermore, they also could learn individually the material and if they found difficulties they will discuss it in the teaching process. As consequences, it will bring a good impact to the increases of the student language awareness.

Abstract

Teachers' roles are critical in the teaching and learning process for students. This study aims to determine students' perceptions of teachers' roles in managing online listening classes. The qualitative descriptive method was used to design this study. This research focused on 2018 English Department students who have completed their listening for academic purposes. Questionnaires and interviews were used to collect data. This study showed that teachers took on the following roles when teaching: controller, organizer, assessor, prompter, participant, resource, tutor, and observer. Teachers also got better at running online listening classes.

Abstract

Abstrak: Pemerintah  Kabupaten Gorontalo menetapkan Pantai Biluhu yang terletak di daerah Biluhu Timur sebagai salah satu geosite wisata Geopark di Kabupaten Gorontalo. Potensi desa Biluhu sebagai desa wisata butuh dukungan sumber daya manusia yang mampu mendukung dicanangkannya desa tersebut sebagai desa wisata geopark. Karena itu, pembekalan bahasa asing seperti bahasa Inggris dibutuhkan bagi anak-anak dan para remaja desa tersebut untuk mengantisipasi datangnya wisatawan asing ke tempat itu. Di samping itu, hal lain yang perlu diperhatikan adalah kesadaran masyarakat untuk menjaga lingkungan desa mereka untuk tidak menjadi rusak. Persoalan yang selalu muncul di daerah-daerah wisata di Indonesia adalah masalah sanitasi, seperti ketersediaan air besih, ketersediaan jamban, pengolahan air limbah, pembuangan sampah, dan pencemaran tanah. Kebersihan lingkungan daerah wisata seringkali tidak diperhatikan oleh pemerintah terkait  dan juga masyarakat, padahal hal ini sangat penting untuk menjaga keberlangsungan desa wisata, yang berakibat langsung pada pendapatan masyarakat. Melalui pengabdian yang diintegrasikan dengan KKN mahasiswa digunakan metode pengajaran Bahasa Inggris, lalu  penyuluhan lingkungan dan bersih desa bersama masyarakat. Kata kunci:  desa; wisata; bahasa Inggris; lingkungan Abstract:  The Government of Gorontalo Regency has determined Biluhu Beach which is located in the East Biluhu area as one of geo-site in the future tourism Geopark of Gorontalo Regency. The potential of Biluhu village as a tourism village needs the support of human resources who are able to support the declaration of the village as one of geopark tourism village. Therefore, the knowledge of foreign languages such as English is needed for the children and youth of the village to anticipate the arrival of foreign tourists to the place. On the other hand, another thing that needs to be considered is the awareness of the community to protect their village environment from being damaged. Problems that always arise in tourism areas in Indonesia are sanitation problems, such as the availability of clean water, availability of toilets, wastewater treatment, waste disposal, and soil pollution. Environmental cleanliness of tourism areas is often not considered by the relevant government and also the community, even though this is very important to maintain the sustainability of tourism villages, which has a direct impact on people's income. Through community service that is integrated with students’ KKN is used English teaching methods, then environmental counselling by lectures and students. Moreover, there is an activity of village clean-ups together with the community.Keywords: village; tour; English; environment

Abstract

This study aimed to explore how students utilize YouTube as a virtual platform for developing English- speaking skills. A qualitative approached was used to capture the experiences of three participants in English Department discussing how YouTube improved their English-speaking skills. To analyse data, a thematic analysis was employed. The findings revealed three major themes, namely employing self- directed learning approach, engaging with videos for active learning, and receiving diverse content exposure for language enrichment. These shed light on the many ways that YouTube helps students improve their English speaking skills and advance our understanding of how students use the platform for foreign language learning.

Abstract

This research aimed to know what are the techniques that use by teachers in teaching listening to students of SMP Negeri 1 Limboto. According to (Harmer: 2007) there are many techniques that teacher uses in teaching listening, every teacher has a technique in teaching listening. There were seven techniques that can use in teaching listening, those were fill in the gap, guessing pictures, finding mistakes, rearranging sentences or paragraph, matching, English song and dictation. Based on this theory, the researcher had formulated the questionnaire and the interview. It is a qualitative research where in analyzing the data the researcher used interview and gave them questionnaire which the procedure explained that the process of analysis involve preparing, the data for analysis, identify the data, deeper understanding the data representing the data the last making interpretation the data. The result of the research found that the teacher at the SMPN 1 Limboto did implement some teaching techniques in teaching listening. Those techniques were fill in the gap, guessing pictures, finding mistakes, rearranging words or paragraph, matching, English song and dictation and the most frequently used technique was fill in the gap. Fill in the gap had found most frequently since it can be used to test a variety of areas such as vocabulary, grammar and were very effective at testing listening for specific words. Moreover, the researcher found that teacher A applied the fill in the gap, 2 finding mistakes, rearranging sentences or paragraph, matching, English song and dictation. Teacher C as in other hand also applied the fill in the gap, finding mistakes, rearranging sentences or paragraph, English song and dictation but did not apply the matching technique. While for the teacher B only applied fill in the gap technique and English song technique. Therefore all the techniques stated by Harmer was used by the teachers in teaching listening.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find and analyze the point of view utilized in the novel Adele Park Lies Lies Lies. This research utilized structural analysis, which allows the researcher to focus on the underlying patterns present in the text, particularly concerning the point of view. The data were obtained from the novel entitled Lies Lies Lies by Adele Parks and this research focused on exploring how the first-person point of view Daisy character and the third-person point of view Simon character in each other interact and contribute to the overall meaning of the story. In this research, data collection than carried out using several specific techniques including an in-depth reading of the entire novel, collecting data concerning two primary types of point of view found in the novel: first-person singular and third-person singular, identifying the specific points of view, and proceeding to analyze each of the sentences that utilized first-person singular and third-person singular point of view. The technique of analyzing data using a structural approach essential in the context of this research, as it provides a systematic and rigorous method to unravel the intricacies of the novel Lies Lies Lies by Adele Parks. The results showed that in Lies Lies Lies, the use of first-person and third-person point of views allows the reader to experience the story from different point of view. The first-person point of view highlights situations experienced by Daisy throughout the novel, which is her twisted marriage story with her husband, Simon. On the other hand, the third-person point of view highlights the situation experienced by Simon, which is his experience in dealing with his marriage, his life in prison, and the fact that his daughter was not his

Abstract

Biluhu merupakan salah satu daerah di Kabupaten Gorontalo yang berhadapan dengan Teluk Tomini. Daerah ini menjadi daya tarik wisatawan karena keindahan pantai dan laguna pesisirnya yang merupakan bagian dari kawasan wisata Biluhu Timur, serta objek wisata pantai lainnya di kawasan Teluk Tomini. Tempat wisata ini sangat menarik untuk dijadikan inspirasi bagi siswa SMA untuk menulis, karena Sekolah Menengah Atas umumnya menyelenggarakan program literasi yang melibatkan kegiatan membaca dan menulis. Pemanfaatan tempat wisata sebagai inspirasi penciptaan puisi merupakan program yang sangat bermanfaat bagi siswa SMA karena dapat menumbuhkan kreativitas menulis mereka. Tujuan dari kegiatan Pengabdian pada Masyarakat ini adalah untuk membekali siswa SMA dengan keterampilan memanfaatkan tempat wisata setempat sebagai inspirasi puisi, sehingga dapat menumbuhkan daya imajinasi dan meningkatkan keterampilan menulis dalam Bahasa Inggris. Dalam pelatihan ini, dosen dari perguruan tinggi setempat memberikan materi pembelajaran kepada siswa untuk menjelaskan sesuatu dan memanfaatkan bahasa kiasan, imaji, dan unsur-unsur puisi lainnya dalam karya mereka. Terakhir, dosen meminta siswa untuk membacakan puisi yang telah mereka buat setelah melalui proses koreksi.
