Abstract

This study aims to carry out the effects and measure the amount of biological value of dietary protein in local rams which were fed concentrate (2.3% body weight) and rice straw ad libithum. Twelve local rams, aged about 1 year old and weighed 25.44 kg ± 1.60 (CV = 6.12), were allocated to three type of feeding treatments. The treatments applied were rice straw without treatment (T0), rice straw treated with urea (T1), and rice strawtreated with urine (T2). The parameters observed were dry matter (DM) intake, crude protein (CP) intake, CP digestibility, CP metabolisability and biological value of dietary protein. The data then was analysed using ANOVA and the results showed no difference at all parameters which observed. Average of DM intake was 895.86 g/d, CP intake was 152.24 g/d, CP digestibility was 77.34%, CP metabolisability was 65.66% and biological value of dietary protein was 84.88%. The conclusion of this research was the rice straw which had treatment with urea or urine did not affect in biological value of dietary protein.

Abstract

A survey study was carried out to investigate the kinds of forage and nutrient adequacy of Jawarandu goats in Brebes Regency, Central Java Province. The study was conducted in three sub-districts Tonjong, Bumiayu, and Paguyangan, involving 504 Jawarandu goats belonging to 45 farmers. Determination of the location, farmers and goat as samples was done by purposive sampling method. The results showed that feedstuffs of Jawarandu goat in Brebes Regency were Albasia (Albaziafalcataria), Mahogany (Swietenia mahogany), Suren (Toonasureni), Kaliandra (Calliandrahaematocephala), and Gamal (Glyricidiasepium). Nutrients consumed by Jawarandu goat in BrebesRgency exceeded the needs as recommended by Kearl (1982). It suggested that Jawarandu goat farmers in Brebes Regency be given counseling/training on feeding management for feed utilization being more efficient.Key words: forage, Jawarandu goat, nutrient adequacy

Abstract

This study was aimed to examine the effect of dietary crude protein (CP) concentration on carcass and meat production in young and adult Kejobong goats. This study used 8 young (5 months) and 8 adult (9 months) Kejobong goats; which were allocated to a randomized nested design, with an age of goat as the nest, and treatment applied was dietary protein concentration (T1: 9.96%; T2: 14.66%). The parameters observed were dry matter intake (DMI), CP intake (CPI), body weight gain (BWG), and the production of carcass meat. The results showed that the DMI of adult goats (910 g/d) was higher (P<0.05) than that of young goats (680 g/d). The goats fed diet T2 had higher (P<0.05) DMI, CPI, and BWG (855 g, 140 g, and 94 g/d, respectively) than those of T1 (725 g/d, 80 g/d, and 59 g/d). Slaughter weight, carcass weight and carcass meat weight, and carcass meat percentage of adult goats (28.09 kg, 13.19 kg, 8.60 kg and 64.94%, respectively) were higher (P <0.05) than those of young goats (20.06 kg, 8.72 kg, 5.46 kg, and 62.06%, respectively). The weight and percentage of carcass meat of T2 (8.30 kg and 64.99%, respectively) were higher (P<0.05) than those of T1 (5.75 kg and 62.06%, respectively). The meat-bone ratio of adult goats was higher (P<0.05) than that of young goats (3.53 vs 2.85). The meat-bone ratio of T2 (3.58) was higher (P<0.05) than that of T1 (2.80). It was concluded that adult Kejobong goats produced more meat than the young ones, and the goat-fed diet with 14.66% CP produced more meat than that with 9.96% CP.

Abstract

Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study were to evaluate the inclusion of Indigofera leaf meal (ILM) in the ration on the carcass and non-carcass production, meat chemical composition and feces-derived methane yield of New Zealand White (NZW) rabbits. Methods: Twenty eights male NZW rabbits with initial body weight of 1455.25 ± 142.41 g, and 65-70 d old were used in this study. There were four treatments namely basal feed (T0); inclusion 4% (T1); 8% (T2), and 12% of ILM (T3) in the ration. The ration was made in form of pellet, and iso-protein that containing 16% of crude protein (CP). The observed variables were carcass and non-carcass production, meat nutrient content and feces-derived methane production. Results: The study result showed that inclusion of ILM in the rabbit ration up to 12% gave no significant effect (P>0.05) on the carcass and non-carcass production, nutrient content of the rabbit meat (CP, extract ether, moisture and ash) both in Longissimus dorsi (LD) and Bicep femoris (BF) muscles. The moisture concentration in LD muscle showed lower than that in BF muscle, while EE content of LD was higher than that in BF muscle. The result also showed that the incorporation of ILM in the ration up to 12% gave no significant effect (P>0.05) on the methane production of rabbit feces. Conclusions: The treatments gave no impact on the observed variables. Therefore, ILM can be used as a protein source in male growing rabbit ration at least up to 12%.
