Abstract

This study was aimed to examine the effect of dietary crude protein (CP) concentration on carcass and meat production in young and adult Kejobong goats. This study used 8 young (5 months) and 8 adult (9 months) Kejobong goats; which were allocated to a randomized nested design, with an age of goat as the nest, and treatment applied was dietary protein concentration (T1: 9.96%; T2: 14.66%). The parameters observed were dry matter intake (DMI), CP intake (CPI), body weight gain (BWG), and the production of carcass meat. The results showed that the DMI of adult goats (910 g/d) was higher (P<0.05) than that of young goats (680 g/d). The goats fed diet T2 had higher (P<0.05) DMI, CPI, and BWG (855 g, 140 g, and 94 g/d, respectively) than those of T1 (725 g/d, 80 g/d, and 59 g/d). Slaughter weight, carcass weight and carcass meat weight, and carcass meat percentage of adult goats (28.09 kg, 13.19 kg, 8.60 kg and 64.94%, respectively) were higher (P <0.05) than those of young goats (20.06 kg, 8.72 kg, 5.46 kg, and 62.06%, respectively). The weight and percentage of carcass meat of T2 (8.30 kg and 64.99%, respectively) were higher (P<0.05) than those of T1 (5.75 kg and 62.06%, respectively). The meat-bone ratio of adult goats was higher (P<0.05) than that of young goats (3.53 vs 2.85). The meat-bone ratio of T2 (3.58) was higher (P<0.05) than that of T1 (2.80). It was concluded that adult Kejobong goats produced more meat than the young ones, and the goat-fed diet with 14.66% CP produced more meat than that with 9.96% CP.

Abstract

Feed security is a major challenge in livestock production systems, especially with the limited availability of conventional feed ingredients competing with human food needs and high price volatility. The use of cashew nut shell (CNS) as an alternative feed component can address this challenge. This study adopts a systematic literature review design to identify, analyze, and synthesize empirical research on the utilization of CNS in sheep rations published within the last decade (2016–2025). The aim of this study is to analyze the nutritional potential, biological benefits, as well as the challenges and development opportunities of CNS as sheep feed. The findings show that CNS contains energy levels comparable to conventional feed ingredients, and it also contains bioactive compounds such as anacardic acid and cardol, which act as natural antimicrobial agents and can reduce enteric methane emissions. However, the use of CNS faces challenges related to the presence of toxic phenolic compounds, although these can be mitigated with processing technologies such as fermentation, thermal treatment, and extraction. CNS holds significant potential as an affordable, environmentally friendly, and sustainable alternative feed. Its use contributes to climate change mitigation by reducing methane emissions. This article provides a significant contribution to applied science by offering empirical evidence to support the sustainability of livestock systems through the utilization of alternative feed resources

Abstract

Global warming and the increasing demand for electricity have strengthened the urgency to introduce environmentally friendly technologies at the community level. Kebondowo Village, located in Banyubiru Sub-district, remains limited in nighttime lighting access and relies heavily on conventional electricity, indicating the need for an efficient and sustainable renewable-energy alternative. In response to this condition, Universitas Diponegoro initiated the Iptek Desa Binaan Undip (IDBU) program through the installation of solar-powered street lights across seven hamlets from July to August 2025 as an early effort to support the development of an environmentally friendly village. The objectives of this program were to improve the quality of village lighting, reduce dependence on conventional energy, increase community awareness of renewable energy use, and evaluate the level of public acceptance of the installed technology. The evaluation was conducted using surveys and semi-structured interviews with 40 adult residents, representing diverse professions and age ranges from 28 to 69 years old (mean age 48), to assess user perceptions, perceived benefits, and expectations for program sustainability. The results showed a highly positive response, with 97% of respondents agreeing with the installation of solar lighting and reporting direct benefits, including improved comfort, safety, and energy efficiency during nighttime activities. Furthermore, most residents expressed their expectation for the expansion of solar-powered street lights across all hamlets. These findings confirm that renewable-energy technology has a high level of social acceptance, effectively improves the community’s quality of life, and holds strong potential to be developed as a sustainable program based on rural community empowerment.

Abstract

The characteristics and price of qurbani goats before Eid al-Adha (EA) needs to be known as a guideline for farmers/traders in providing qurbani goats and the right time to buy sacrificial goats. The material is goats sold as qurbani animals in Semarang regency. The study used a survey method with purposive sampling based on goats that had been sold. The parameters observed were goat breed, body weight (BW), body measurements and goat prices from the 23rd to the 1st day before EA. The results showed that the goats purchased were mostly Jawarandu breed (96.7%), male, horned black and white body color combination (33.3%), an average body weight of 40.6 kg, chest circumference of 76.8 cm, body length of 68.2 cm, shoulder height of 70.9 cm, aged between 1-1.5 years, and an average price of Rp. 3,000,000 to Rp. 4,000,000 per head. The results of the correlation regression analysis showed that the relationship between the price of qurbani goats per head and the time before EA followed the equation y = 26,071x + 4,000,000, with an r value = 0.204 (low). The relationship between the price of goats per head and BW followed the equation y = 79,565x + 349,252 with an r value = 0.848 (very strong). The relationship between the price of goats per kg and the time before EA followed the equation y = 932.77x + 96,955 with an r value = 0.575 (moderate). The relationship between goat price per kg and BW followed the equation y = -313.31x + 101,636 with a value of r = 0.263 (low). The conclusion of the was study that the purchase of sacrificial goats were male Jawarandu breed, horned, weighing 40.6 kg, aged 1-1.5 years, and priced at Rp. 3,000,000 to Rp. 4,000,000 per head. The price of goat per head was more influenced by the weight of the goat than the time leading up to the EA, while the price of the goat per kg was more influenced by the time leading up to the EA than the weight of the goat.
