Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the challenges and  identifying the way the English teachers solve the challenges toward online teaching during Covid-19 pandemic. This study was qualitative research. Three instruments were used to collect the data, those are: open-ended questionnaire, interview and documentation. As a result, this study showed that there were eight challenges experienced by the English teachers in remote areas toward online teaching during Covid-19 pandemic, those are: (1) inadequate infrastructure; (2) student’s learning attention; (3) financial condition; (4) students readiness; (5) parent’s concern; (6) designing materials; (7) measuring student’s understanding, and (8) the instability of student’s motivation. During teaching-learning process, there were various ways in overcoming the challenges done by the English teachers, those are: (1) create an interactive media; (2) decide the most suitable online learning tool; (3) give additional time for the students; (4) provide adequate facilities for both teacher and student in remote areas. Keywords:  Challenge, Covid-19 Pandemic, English Teaching, Online Learning

Abstract

This study was aimed to measure that students who are taught using two-dimensional motion picture provide a higher vocabulary mastery or not in seventh grade at SMPN 4 Satu Atap Murung. Quasi-experimental design was used in this research. Quasi-experimental aims to assess cause and effect between research objects. The instrument used is a test. The question is in   the form of multiple choice, there are 50 items of vocabulary variety. Researchers designed lesson plans, administered treatment and calculated student scores through pre-test and post-test. The population in this study were 168 students of SMPN 4 Satu Atap Murung. While the sample in this study were 50 seventh grade students of SMPN 4 Satu Atap Murung. Data analysis used SPSS 24 software. Based on the results of the analysis, the two-tailed t-test significance was lower than alpha 0.05 or 0.001 < 0.05. Based on manual calculations, the results obtained that the value obtained is higher than the ttable value at a significance level of 5% or 3.5 > 2.01. Can say that teaching by using two dimension motion picture gives students higher English vocabulary. Keywords:  Effect, Two Dimension Motion Picture, Vocabulary Mastery

Abstract

EFL textbooks are optimal resources for EFL teachers and students, providing essential materials for teaching and learning English. Cultural content in these textbooks is an important aspect that needs attention, because it plays an important role in shaping EFL students' attitudes and beliefs towards other cultures, especially in MTsN 1 school in Palangka Raya city. This study aims to find out (1) what aspects are included in the cultural content presented in the "Bahasa Inggris untuk SMP/MTs Kelas VII" textbook. then (2) What is the meaning of culture presented in the "Bahasa Inggris untuk SMP/MTs Kelas VII" textbook? Cultural content will be studied using descriptive and qualitative methods. The research subject is taken from the EFL Textbook:"Bahasa Inggris untuk SMP/MTs Kelas VII". The data sources used are the cultural content contained in the research books, observations and documents. The analysis in this study includes data collection, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The research shows that the textbook "Bahasa Inggris untuk SMP/MTs Kelas VII" has an unbalanced ratio between the four aspects of culture (product, practice, perspective and society). The practical side dominates the content of the book, followed by the product side, the opinion side, and the social side. There are three types of cultural content in secondary school textbooks: source culture, target culture and international culture. Textbooks present more source culture than target culture and international culture.
