Abstract

Vocational high school graduates need communication skills to be job-ready. This is a global communication tool and a job-ready skill. However, many difficulties still need in acquiring English communication skills as part of vocational high school preparation for employment, such as body language, mental issues, lack of ideas, grammatical mistakes, etc. Thus, effective teaching, learning, and evaluation may address these issues. This research examined how portfolio assessment promotes communication skills and how students react to it. Quasi-experimental research used pre-tests and post-test. However, observation and questionnaires are also employed to underpin the tests’ findings and as additional data for a more comprehensive investigation. The experimental group (30 students) and the control group (28 students) were 58 software engineering majors. Each group received three portfolio assessment-based therapy sessions. This research revealed three main findings. First, 0.000 is lower than 0.05. H0 is refused, whereas Ha is accepted. Second, the experimental group's paired sample t-test score is 14.533, substantially greater than the control group's 6.823. Third, students prioritized emotive over cognitive and behavioral factors. Abstract

This research analyzes students’ reading speed of recount text at tenth-grade students of SMK Plus Karya Bakti Pertiwi. The researchers used qualitative descriptive method to analyze the data. The subject of this research was 30 students of eleventh-grade students in SMK Plus Karya Bakti Pertiwi. The instrument in this research was a reading test of recount text. The researchers used a stopwatch to count the time while students were reading the text. Based on the reading speed test, the typical speed of reading students revealed that three students could read 100-149 words per minute (wpm) in slow category, and other 27 students can only obtain 50-99 wpm in very slow category. In summary, the skill of reading speed students at X grade in SMK Plus Karya Bakti Pertiwi was very slow.

Abstract

This study is about the reiteration of lexical cohesion found in Emma Watson’s speech entitled Gender Equality. This study is to find out the types of reiteration in Emma Watson’s speech. The subject of this study is the speech text “Gender Equality” used by Emma Watson for UN Women’s HeForShe campaign. Descriptive qualitative was used as a research method. From the analysis, there are five types of reiteration of lexical cohesion. The result shows that there was 74 reiteration found in total in this study, namely 43 of repetition, 19 of hyponym, 4 of antonym, 5 of synonym, and 3 of superordinate or hypernym. Repetition is the most used in the speech. The reiteration used by Emma Watson in her speech has built up the cohesiveness in the speech of the action of solidarity movement for gender equality to help end the inequalities faced by women globally.

Abstract

Salah satu target lulusan  Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan (SMK) adalah kesiapan untuk bekerja. Mereka bisa bekerja dengan cepat dari keterampilan yang dimilikinya sejak duduk di bangku sekolah. Kemudahan mendapat pekerjaan ini tentu harus ditopang dengan kemampuan berbahasa asing temasuk Bahasa Inggris dan salah satu sertifikasi kemampuan Bahasa asing yang diakui secara internasional adalah TOEIC atau Test of English for International Communication. Melihat pentingnya penguasaan TOEIC ini, dan ternyata di sekolah hal ini belum menjadi mata pelajaran tersendiri, maka untuk itulah pengabdian masyarakat ini dilakukan. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan di SMK Assalam Cibaduyut kelas XII yang diikuti oleh 30 orang siswa. Dalam pelaksanaanya, ada dua tahap, yaitu: 1) Tahap Introduction, yaitu pengenalan tentang apa itu TOEIC, apa tujuan TOEIC, bagaimana jenis soalnya dan apa saja tips mengerjakan soalnya, 2) Tahap Simulasi, dimana siswa mencoba mengerjakan soal-soal TOEIC dan dibahas jawabannya bersama-sama.

Abstract

Implementing an online-based learning management system, educators must prepare materials and other learning tools such as lesson implementation plans. But the fact is that 57% of students have difficulty when online learning is carried out. The research aims to analyze the process of implementing online learning carried out in universities using online media. This research is urgently carried out because there are differences between theory and reality in the field. The research method used was a mixed method with surveys and interviews with students. The subjects in this research were 150 university students from all study programs who were chosen randomly. Data collection techniques using surveys by distributing instruments to students. The instrument was prepared and developed and has been validated. The instrument was given a score on a Likert scale starting from point 1 to point 5. Data was also obtained by interviewing 10 students who were randomly selected from 150 survey respondents. The data analysis technique uses SPSS Version 26. Data is analyzed by calculating the average of each indicator and making it in the form of a bar chart. Interviews were analyzed by collecting data, reducing data, and drawing conclusions. As a result, it was found that students had difficulties in the online learning process. Difficulties arise because of the obstacles experienced by lecturers when implementing learning. The impact of these obstacles affects the learning process and reduces students' understanding and knowledge.
