Abstract

Program Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM) merupakan kegiatan wajib yang dilaksanakan oleh dosen sebagai pemenuhan tridharma perguruan tinggi. PkM ini perlu dilakukang untuk membekali guru-guru di Jampang English Village (JEV) dengan metode alternatif dalam pengajaran bahasa inggris untuk siswa didik di mereka. Selain itu PkM ini merupakan bentuk kerjasama rutin antar dua institusi JEV dan Universitas Pamulang (UNPAM) yang bersifat sharing best practice. JEV merupakan satu kursus Bahasa Inggris yang murid-muridnya berasal dari seluruh desa Jampang Bogor, Jawa Barat. JEV sendiri adalah program Zona Madina Dompet Dhuafa yang bertujuan memberikan pelatihan bahasa inggris gratis. Pelatihan ini sendiri memberikan dua kontribusi yaitu aspek kompetensi guru dan aspek fasilitas. Aspek kompetensi guru yakni para guru bahasa inggris di JEV dapat menguasai dan mampu menggunakan metode pembelajaran berbasis genre. Sedang aspek fasilitas yang mana pada pelatihan diberikan bimbingan teknis kepada para guru untuk menggunakan buku ajar yang telah disusun dengan pendekatan berbasis genre pada kegiatan PkM terdahulu.

Abstract

Meskipun membaca merupakan kegiatan yang sangat penting terutama bagi siswa-siswi dalam masa pendidikan, tetap saja kenyataan menunjukkan bahwa membaca merupakan kegiatan yang menjenuhkan. Kurangnya minat membaca dikalangan siswa-siswi berdampak signifikan terhadap perkembangan aspek literasi mereka. Salah satu faktor penyebab rendahnya minat baca siswa-siswi adalah kurangnya ketersediaan buku ajar atau buku aktivitas yang menarik. Fenomena ini juga terjadi pada siswa-siswi Jampang English Village yang berlokasi di daerah Bogor. Untuk itu, pada kegiatan PKM ini dikembangakn sebuah buku ajar dengan menggunakan pendekatan berbasis genre dengan mengadopsi kerangka pemikiran dari Reading to Learn yang dikembangkan oleh David Rose (2005) yang mengadopsi tiga tahap pengajaran bahasa Inggris berbasis genre yaitu deconstruction (dekonstruksi), joint construction (konstruksi bersama), dan individual construction (konstruksi individu). Kegiatan PKM yang berlangsung selama kurang lebih tiga bulan ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan aspek literasi sekaligus meningkatkan motivasi membaca para siswa di Jampang English Village. Hasil dari kegiatan PKM ini adalah sebuah buku ajar yang dikembangkan dengan menggunakan pendekatan berbasis genre. Buku tersebut dapat digunakan sebagai bahan ajar bagi siswa-siswi di Jampang English Village.

Abstract

This reserached was aimed to figure out the interpersonal functions of taboo words  in Vacation movie. Descriptive qualitative method was emploed in this research since the data were non-numerical data and the results of the research were explained in description which can be in forms of words, sentences, discourse, picture, etc. This research employed simak and catat technique to collect the data from Vacation movie. This is a technique for achieving data through listening carefully and then followed by taking note. In this research, the writer did the simak and catat technique by watching and listening to the movie carefully and then noted some words which were categorized as taboo words. Then, the data were analyzed and classified to figure out their interpersonal functions based on the theory of Zhao and Zhang (2016). As the result, there are at least three interpersonal functions of taboo words which are used and uttered by the characters in the Vacation movie. The interpersonal functions of taboo words which are found in the Vacation movie are to strengthen power and intensity, to vent pent-up emotions, and to show the acquaintance and intimacy.

Abstract

For EFL students especially the students of English Letters Department at Pamulang University, mastering English is something challenging. There are several problems which they face in learning English. One of the most crucial problems is pronunciation. Hence, appropriate teaching methods such as using phonetic transcription are needed to help the students to improve their pronunciation. This research focused on using phonetic transcription to improve the pronunciation skills of the fourth semester students of English Letters Department of Pamulang University. It was aimed to reveal if the utilization of phonetic transcription was able to improve the students’ pronunciation. It was also aimed to figure out how phonetic transcription improved the students’ pronunciation. This research implemented Classroom Action Research which was carried out from February until April 2020. There were two cycles in this research and each cycle consisted of three meetings. In collecting the data, the writers used field notes, interviews and tests. The average of the students’ score in the pre-cycle and cycle 1 were 59,86 and 66,07 which were still lower  than 75 as the target. In the cycle 2, the average of the students’ score was 75,56 which was higher than 75. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that phonetic transcription was able to improve the students’ pronunciation. Phonetic transcription had role in improving both segmental and supra segmental features of the students’ pronunciation.

Abstract

The significnce of speaking in English has triggered education practitioners to organize an English program as done by Madrasah Aliyah Nurul Qur’an. However, observation result reveals that students of the school face some difficulties in speaking English such as limited arrange of vocabulary, mispronouncing, and self confidence. Accordingly, a team from English Literature Study Program of Universitas Pamulang initiated to conduct a community service to improve the students’ speaking skill by using parliamentary debate with the following steps: (1) presenting the students a set of materials about parliamentary debate; (2) grouping the students, (3)some groups act as affirmative group and the others as opposition; (4) motivating and sharing some tips to be proficient in English. The afore-mentioned steps are meant to brace the students to be more confident and motivated in speaking English.
