Abstract

Sound propagates effectively through the water column, establishing hydroacoustic technology as a premier method for underwater exploration, including the mapping of aquatic ecological resources. While the fisheries sector is considered pivotal in aquatic resource studies, mapping fisheries remains challenging due to the distinct distribution patterns exhibited by fish within the water column, which are intricately linked to their habitat preferences. In this study, the hydroacoustic method was employed to analyze the distribution of fish in the waters surrounding Lancang Island, Seribu Islands, Jakarta.  This analysis utilized the target strength (TS) value alongside oceanographic parameters. Acoustic data was collected using a 200 kHz single beam echosounder based on parallel transects encircling the waters of Lancang Island. CTD was utilized to collect oceanographic data to acquire temperature and salinity profiles within the water column. The acoustic data processing was conducted using the post-processing software SONAR 5-pro. The analysis was performed based on acoustic cells, obtained by dividing segments every 100 m horizontally and layers every 5 m vertically, thereby obtaining the Target Strength per cell (TSc) and volume backscattering strength (SV) values from each cell. The results showed that the highest average TSc value was found in the depth range of 26-31 m at -46.98 dB, and the highest SED biomass was also found in the same depth range at 26.6 kg.ha-1. Based on the analysis of water temperature and salinity, it was found that these factors significantly influence the distribution of fish in the waters of Lancang Island (R-square= 0.1276 and P< 0.05). This finding also indicates the presence of other parameters affecting fish distribution in Lancang waters, with the type of substrate and habitat emerging as potential determining factors, notably in coral reef environments.

Abstract

Pollution in the ocean caused by anthropogenic activities has been a global issue. However, data on marine debris in Aceh Waters is limited. This study was conducted to identify the category, density, and source of marine debris on the Weh Island and Aceh Island beaches during the first monsoon transition period. Samples were collected in April 2022 at four stations, namely Laweung Beach in Sumatra Island (station 1), Aron Beach in Weh Island (Station 2), Nipah Beach and Alue Riyeung Beach in Aceh Island (Station 3 and Station 4, respectively). Samples collected in a 100 m-length transect were classified into nine categories: plastic, foamed plastic, cloth, glass and ceramic, metal, paper and cupboard, rubber, wood, and others. The result depicted that the highest density was plastic (0.602-1.022 items/m2), followed by foamed plastic (0.038 to 0.654 items/m2) and rubber (0.020 to 0.089 items/m2). Turning to its appliances, plastic was mostly used as packaging, such as bottles and cups for drinking water, while foamed plastic and rubber were used for cooling boxes and footwear. As the sea current shifted during the monsoon transition period, trash from ships passing the marine routes around the Aceh Waters is assumed to be transporting debris from various countries, such as Malaysia, Thailand, and China.

Abstract

The Striped Goatfish (Upeneus vittatus) is a demersal species of significant ecological and economic value, particularly for small-scale fisheries in Aceh Province. Accurate biomass estimation and species identification in hydroacoustic surveys rely heavily on precise target strength (TS) reference values. This study aimed to establish reference TS values for U. vittatus by examining the relationship between TS and fish morphology. Specimens collected from northern Aceh waters were measured for total length (TL: 17.328.3 cm) and weight (W, g). TS measurements were conducted using a single-beam echosounder (Simrad EK15) operating at 200 kHz with a pulse duration of 0.16 ms in a controlled water-tank environment. This approach enabled the assessment of TS variability across specimens with different TLs. A robust relationship between TL and weight revealed positive allometric growth (b = 3.2932, R = 0.94) in the study. Furthermore, TS analysis demonstrated a logarithmic increase with TL (R = 0.6459), in alignment with theoretical predictions. These findings contribute to more accurate biomass estimation and support sustainable management strategies for U. vittatus populations in northern Aceh, Indonesia. Future research should encompass a broader range of fish sizes and incorporate additional biological variables to refine TS prediction models further.Keywords:GoatfishAcehLWRTSMullidae

Abstract

Rainfall variability is influenced by several annual global and regional phenomena including the influence of monsoons, El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), La Nina, and local climates. Sea surface temperature is one of the elements that affect weather patterns in Indonesia. This is because sea surface temperature plays an important role in the evaporation process, thus affecting cloud formation and subsequently affecting rainfall. The purpose of this study was to obtain information about the effect of sea surface temperatures on the onset in the Southwest Aceh region. The method used in this study is the correlation method between sea surface temperature anomalies (SST) and rainfall. The results of this study show that rainfall in the West-South region of Aceh varies greatly and has an equatorial pattern. The equatorial pattern is characterized by a rainfall type with a bimodal shape or there are two rain peaks during the year, namely around March and October. A positive anomaly in the West-South region of Aceh indicated that the rainfall at that time was higher than normal. Meanwhile, negative anomalies indicate that rainfall in the region is lower than normal conditions. The beginning of the average rainy season that occurs in the Southwest Aceh region starts on the 25th which occurs in September and ends until February. The beginning average rainy season that occurs in the West-South region of Aceh, starts on the 25th basis which occurs in September, and ends until February. The highest onset occurred in the Southwest Aceh area, which was 0,2059, and the beginning of the lowest rainy season or regression occurred in the West Aceh area, which was 0,0122.Keywords:Sea surface temperatureRainfallWest-South AcehCorrelation

Abstract

Pesisir Aceh memiliki kondisi pantai yang saling memiliki hubungan timbal balik diantaranya ekosistem Bakau (mangrove), lamun dan terumbu karang. Perbandingan karakteristik kondisi sedimen sampai dengan nilai statistik perlu di lakukan di padang lamun perairan Aceh Besar untuk melihat jenis sedimen dan komponen statistik pendukung keberadaan vegetasi lamun. Metode yang digunakan dalam penentuan titik stasiun adalah metode purposive sampling, sedangkan pengambilan sampel menggunakan metode pemboran dan pengambilan data lamun menggunakan metode transek plot. Lokasi penelitian berada di perairan Ahmad Rhang Manyang dan Perairan Ujung Pancu. Nilai statistik pada kedua perairan memiliki kemiripan dari nilai ukuran butiran rata-rata (mz), sorting, skewness dan kurtosis. Secara keseluruhan sedimen perairan memiliki antara 2,49

Abstract

The northern waters of Banda Aceh are connected with the Indian Ocean, the Andaman Sea, and the Malacca Strait, thus making the study of water quality parameters in this region is important for enviromental management. In this study, water quality parameters are measured spatially and then continued with assessing the pollution index. The results can be helpful for development planning and coastal pollution mitigation in Banda Aceh. The data was collected from 21 seawater samples from 11 stations representing the water of Banda Aceh on 10-11 September 2019. VanDorn bottles were used to store the seawater samples for laboratory analysis. Several parameters such as temperature, salinity, and pH were measured in situ, while other parameters were tested in the laboratory. Most heavy metal parameters showed values below the minimal and maximal value limit detection of the instrument, indicating a small potential for heavy metal contamination. However, the pollution index (PI) indicates the potential for water pollution dominated by nitrate and phosphate with a value that exceeds the water quality standard. The indications are shown from the high aquaculture and anthropogenic activities around the coast of Banda Aceh.

Abstract

Kandungan mineral besi pada alam menjadi topik yang menarik untuk dikaji terkait peran pentingnya secara ekonomi. Keberadaan magnetite pada sedimen di suatu wilayah perairan dapat juga digunakan sebagai fingerprint dari proses transport sedimen. Penelitian ini ditujukan untuk mengamati sejumlah parameter butiran sedimen untuk mendapatkan gambaran pola distribusi sedimen yang terjadi pada daerah Labuhan Haji Timur, Aceh Selatan. Pengambilan sampel sedimen dilangsungkan pada November 2015 menggunakan metode coring. Sebanyak empat stasiun dipilih untuk mewakili kawasan perairan Labuhan Haji timur, yang terdiri dari daerah aliran sungai, muara, dan pantai. Sejumlah analisis yang dilakukan adalah ukuran butiran rata-rata, bentuk partikel, dan kandungan kimia penyusun sedimen. Analisis kandungan kimia dari sampel sedimen dilakukan pada Laboratorium Sentral Mineral dan Material Maju, FMIPA Universitas Malang menggunakan X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), dimana sebelumnya sampel dari setiap stasiun dipilah berdasarkan ukuran halus (lebih kecil dari 0,5 mm) dan kasar (lebih besar dari 0,5 mm). sampel sedimen yang berasal dari pantai dan muara memiliki modus distribusi ukuran sedimen pada fraksi pasir sangat halus, sedangkan modus pada daerah aliran sungai berada pada fraksi pasir sangat kasar. Magnetite ditemukan pada setiap lokasi sampling, persentase tertinggi berada pada kawasan muara. Analisis bentuk butiran magnetite menunjukkan bentuk yang lebih angular pada daeah aliran sungai dan menjadi lebih rounded pada kawasan pantai. Disimpulkan bahwa kandungan magnetite yang terdapat pada kawasan pantai di Labuhan haji Timur ditransportasikan melalui aliran Sungai Peulumat.

Abstract

Teluk Lamteng memiliki potensi ekosistem lamun yang sangat besar. Potensi lamun yang besar ini turut menyokong kelimpahan sumberdaya perikanan di daerah tersebut. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui keragaman lamun. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada bulan Desember 2018, dimana penentuan stasiun pengamatan menggunakan metode purposive sampling yaitu berdasarkan observasi mencakup area yang terdapat dermaga, baik dermaga kecil maupun dermaga besar. Analisis data yang digunakan yaitu persentase tutupan lamun (C), kerapatan jenis lamun (Di), keanekaragaman lamun (H’), serta indikator keberadaan dugong yaitu dengan melakukan survei feeding trail yang ditinggalkan oleh dugong dan menduga preferensi lamun yang menjadi favorit dugong sebagai makanannya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa komposisi jenis lamun yang ditemukan di perairan Teluk Lamteng terdiri dari tiga spesies yaitu Cymodocea serrulata, Halodule pinifolia dan Halophila ovalis. Penutupan lamun tertinggi oleh spesies H. pinifolia adalah 67,84%, selanjutnya diikuti C. serrulata sebesar 44,79% dan paling rendah yaitu spesies H. ovalis dengan angka 2,21%. Secara keseluruhan stasiun, spesies H. pinifolia memiliki nilai kerapatan yang lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan kedua spesies lamun lainnya, yaitu antara 55-316 ind/m2. Keanekaragaman lamun tergolong rendah dengan nilai berkisar antara 0-0,9. Ketiga spesies lamun yang ditemukan merupakan sumber pakan bagi D. dugon yang termasuk dalam kategori preferensi lamun kesukaannya.
