Abstract

This study aims to analyze gender portrayal in Ghost in the Shell (2017) movie by applying Donna Haraway’s concept of cyborgs as in her Cyborg Manifesto. Focusing on the analysis of narrative and non-narrative elements, this research seeks to reveal how the main character is portrayed as a female cyborg. As a result, the writers found that her shifting existence as a female cyborg in the movie is the representation of how women can be the subject by affiliating with technology. The assumption of women as the "object" of technology is no longer exist, and they are competent to have a career in technology. As a conclusion, this movie promotes the idea of women empowerment in technology by the affiliation of women and technology.

Abstract

This study aims to explore how TikTok content consumptions affect daily language usage of 4th-6th graders in Surabaya elementary school. The popularity of TikTok as an entertainment platform has increased rapidly since Covid-19 pandemic. With thousands of content, some of TikTok users are children who are in the phase of imitation and building their language skills. By applying a qualitative approach based on interviews and observations, our findings suggest that during the pandemic, parental supervision of children's smartphone usage was very low. This creates a tendency for children to freely roam on various applications on their devices, including TikTok, which results in massive and uncontrolled patterns of content consumption. On further observations of content production activities and cross-platform online social interactions, findings revealed the tendency for these children to reproduce and imitate several vocabularies commonly found in TikTok content, such as anjing, goblok, kakak, butuh kontak, bang, lonte, and cok. In researchers’ observations, these vocabularies tend to have negative nuances because they contain swearing, disrespectful, and rude elements.

Abstract

This study closely examines the character of Alita in the film Alita: Battle Angel to determine whether she represents women’s empowerment. Heroines are often portrayed as powerful and independent figures who challenge traditional gender roles. To analyze Alita's character, this study utilizes Greimas' actantial model of narrative structure and Donna Haraway’s concept of the cyborg from A Cyborg Manifesto. Greimas' model helps dissect the narrative roles and relationships, while Haraway's concept aids in understanding the intersection of technology and gender. The analysis reveals that Alita embodies certain elements of women’s empowerment. She displays physical strength, resilience, and a sense of autonomy that are typically associated with empowered female characters. Alita's journey of self-discovery and her fight against oppressive forces resonate with themes of independence and empowerment. However, a deeper examination of the film's narrative structure and character dynamics uncovers underlying patriarchal elements. Despite Alita's strengths, the film presents a technological hierarchy where male characters, particularly Dr. Dyson Ido and Vector, hold significant control and influence over Alita and other female characters. This dynamic suggests that while Alita is portrayed as a powerful figure, her agency is still constrained within a male-dominated technological framework. Furthermore, the film's depiction of Alita as a cyborg complicates the narrative of empowerment. Haraway's cyborg theory suggests that cyborgs can transcend traditional gender boundaries and challenge patriarchal structures. Yet, in Alita: Battle Angel, the cyborg nature of Alita is used to emphasize her otherness and dependence on male characters for her identity and purpose. This reinforces traditional gender hierarchies rather than subverting them.

Abstract

This mini-article explores the live-action adaptation of Disney’s The Little Mermaid (2023) through cultural criticism, focusing on Ariel's portrayal. It highlights her significance as a black-skinned character portrayed by actress Halle Bailey within a historically white narrative and argues that this adaptation critiques dominant cultural narratives that marginalize Black experiences. By reimagining Ariel, the film empowers Black representation in mainstream media and encourages audiences to engage with the complexities of identity and freedom, ultimately challenging perceptions of race in storytelling.

Abstract

Leila S. Chudori's Laut Bercerita explores collective trauma and political oppression in Indonesia, focusing on enforced disappearances during the New Order. This comparative study examines how the Indonesian and English versions convey themes of memory, identity, and justice. Both versions highlight the characters' inner conflicts and the symbolism of the sea and melarung ritual, though these elements carry different cultural nuances. A psychoanalytic analysis reveals how trauma and identity suppression are addressed, with the English version broadening the interpretation to universal psychological themes. Ultimately, the study shows how both versions preserve the core message of resistance while offering distinct cultural perspectives.

Abstract

Upon its release, Damsel's movie became the spotlight since its director, Juan Carlos, claimed it represented contemporary feminism. Using the encoding-decoding model of communication by Stuart Hall, this study aims to analyze the representation of women's heroes and how the audiences respond to them. The data collection techniques include interviews, newspaper articles, and observations from the movie itself. From the decoded messages obtained, the findings show that the hegemonic dominant audience agreed that there was a concept of feminism explained through the heroine; however, the negotiated audience found it unrealistic due to the overpowering female characterization, and the oppositional audience found that the movie depicted women’s suffering due to the patriarchal system rather than women's empowerment. Furthermore, the majority of audience responses indicate agreement where they acknowledge the feminist values in the film. Therefore, this movie stands out among many hero-centric films by highlighting a fresh portrayal of women in media, challenging the conventional depiction of women as weak and needing rescue by men for happiness or salvation. It also questions how well they align with real-world realities.
