Abstract

This study is conducted to investigate a popular practice of modifying Javanese bridal costumes based on religious considerations. Transformation from purely traditional Javanese bridal costumes to those with some application of Islamic clothing style is gaining rapid acceptance and begins to be considered as a popular fashion style by a great number of Indonesians, especially in urban areas like Surabaya. The purpose of this study is to discover cultural (Java) and religious (Islam) symbolisms implied in the modification and to examine the signification involved in the process. By applying the fashion system theory, this paper seeks to unravel the symbolisms in modern Javanese-Moslem bridal costumes which reveal a thought system built of two intertwining aspects: Javanese culture and Islamic religious principles. Deep observation into the cultural and religious symbolisms reveals that the modern Javanese-Moslem bridal costumes are actually invented by bridal stylists as a form of capitalism which benefits from a consumerist lifestyle. This fact reflects a shift in the way people signify modern Javanese-Moslem bridal costumes from Javanese local culture to contemporary Javanese culture. Another interesting finding shows that people choose this Javanese-Moslem style for their bridal costumes because of not only religious considerations but also its popularity. The application of Islamic fashion style in the Javanese-Moslem bridal costumes is no longer associated with the obedience to Islamic teachings but is a mere reflection of a growing trend towards more extensive body coverage.

Abstract

Upon its release, Damsel's movie became the spotlight since its director, Juan Carlos, claimed it represented contemporary feminism. Using the encoding-decoding model of communication by Stuart Hall, this study aims to analyze the representation of women's heroes and how the audiences respond to them. The data collection techniques include interviews, newspaper articles, and observations from the movie itself. From the decoded messages obtained, the findings show that the hegemonic dominant audience agreed that there was a concept of feminism explained through the heroine; however, the negotiated audience found it unrealistic due to the overpowering female characterization, and the oppositional audience found that the movie depicted women’s suffering due to the patriarchal system rather than women's empowerment. Furthermore, the majority of audience responses indicate agreement where they acknowledge the feminist values in the film. Therefore, this movie stands out among many hero-centric films by highlighting a fresh portrayal of women in media, challenging the conventional depiction of women as weak and needing rescue by men for happiness or salvation. It also questions how well they align with real-world realities.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the dynamics of the bourgeoisie through the character of Coriolanus Snow in Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and its film adaptation. Utilizing a qualitative comparative method, the research applies Marxist social class theory to analyze how Snow’s character reflects and critiques bourgeois ideologies in both the novel and the movie. The data were collected through textual and cinematic analysis, focusing on Snow’s socio-economic background, interactions, and personal transformation. The study highlights how internal narration in the novel and visual representation in the film construct different emphases on class struggle, power ambition, and ideological control. The findings reveal substantial differences in character development and thematic focus, illustrating how literature and film uniquely represent class hierarchies within a dystopian society.

Abstract

This research discusses how NOAH gave a modern change (modernization) sentiment in video clips, so it can be enjoyable by fans of NOAH. The objectives are, 1) Explain the visual modernization change in NOAH’s video clips remake version; and 2) Explain the visual modernization that is able to reconstruct NOAH's identity. This research uses a qualitative method with a musicological approach. The research data was collected through virtual observation from video clips of NOAH’s remake music video. This research showed that 1) a visual comparison was conducted across six NOAH music videos comparing original and remake versions, such as "Bintang di Surga," "Khayalan Tingkat Tinggi," "Yang Terdalam," "Di Atas Normal," "Menghapus Jejakmu," and "Kota Mati." The analysis identified significant transformations across five dimensions: a) technological implementation, b) visual aesthetics, c) narrative structure, d) performer roles, and e) symbolic representation. Other than, 2) the modernization elements present in NOAH's remake album successfully reconstructed the band's identity as a cross-generational act through three strategic approaches: an aesthetic transition from "organic" to "digital" paradigms, implementation of visual hybridity strategies, and symbolic reinterpretation. So, the visual modernization effectively bridges generational divides, the transformation has not been without criticism from segments of NOAH's fanbase.

Abstract

This article analyzes the cultural significance of the theme song of Si Doel Anak Sekolahan using an ethnomusicological approach, specifically focusing on the representation of Betawi society. The main problem addressed is how the song's lyrics reflect the identity, values, and social changes of the Betawi people within an urban context. Additionally, this study explores how music functions as a form of cultural storytelling, representing the daily experiences and social dynamics of the Betawi community. This research aims to understand the role of music as a medium of cultural expression that mirrors social realities while preserving cultural identity in the face of modernization. The method used is a qualitative lyrical text analysis to identify prominent cultural themes. The findings reveal that the lyrics are not merely entertainment but also a means to reinforce community identity and reflect complex social dynamics.

Abstract

This study analyzes music's role in shaping visitors' hyperreal experiences in Kampung Jelita, Surabaya. Using a qualitative case study approach, the research focuses on the Japanese and Balinese thematic zones and applies Jean Baudrillard's theory of hyperreality. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, direct observation, literature review, and documentation conducted in the Kampung Jelita area, Manukan Lor IV E Street, RT 05/RW 01, Banjar Sugihan Subdistrict, Tandes District, Surabaya. The findings reveal that instrumental music is a cultural simulator that evokes illusion and fantasy, supporting Baudrillard's view that simulation can substitute reality. The soundscapes in each thematic zone, Japanese and Balinese, enhance the immersive experience by harmonizing with visual ornaments, prompting visitors to engage emotionally, experience nostalgia, and participate in performative acts such as renting traditional costumes. However, some visitors noted inconsistencies between the music and the intended cultural themes. Theoretically, this study contributes to hyperreality discourse by emphasizing the role of music in reinforcing sensory simulation within thematic tourism village contexts. Practically, the findings suggest that curating culturally coherent soundscapes can strengthen visitors' emotional attachment and enhance destination branding. Thus, music should be regarded as a strategic medium in constructing cultural identity and tourist experience.

Writing scientific article becomes teachers obligation, because scientific publication is an important requirement for their promotion. In order to awaken and improve teachers' ability to write such publication, the Graduate Program of Literary and Cultural Studies (LCS) Universitas Airlangga conducted community service. This activity took form of training for writing scientific articles by using templates. This training was carried out in the form of delivering lectures and discussions. The team of trainers planned to expand the method in the form of workshop that is by writing practice and consultation at the next community service activity. The participants of this training were high school English teachers in Kediri and Banyuwangi. This activity was carried out separately in the two cities. By conducting this training, we found the enthusiasm of the teachers. The issues uttered for writing articles are also interesting and varied. Their hopes that the training can continue further and be carried out intensively shows that these teachers do need assistance in writing. Besides that, the training activities in these two cities indicates a snapshot of high school teachers in other areas who also need the same training and assistance.

Abstract

On 18 August 2023, “Baddiecore” emerged as a fan-coined label described as “metalcore with enough pop music crossover and sex appeal that normie hot people like it,” according to a viral X post by Craig Reynolds. Although bands like Sleep Token, Bad Omens, and Spiritbox were initially associated with the term, “Baddie” itself is rooted in Black American digital and feminist culture. This creates a tension when the genre is visually and sonically dominated by white male artists. This study examines how Baddiecore reflects the gendered construction of genre in digital metal communities, using the framework of postfeminist sensibility. Employing content analysis, the study draws 108 public posts on X between August 2023 and December 2024, using keywords like “Baddiecore” and associated band names. Findings show that Baddiecore was initially met with contestation due to its feminized tone but later gained acceptance, particularly among women fans engaging through merchandise and aesthetic participation. However, genre ownership remains centered around white male artists, with only two solo women and one female-fronted band visibly linked to the term. Ultimately, Baddiecore reveals how genre can operate as a site of aestheticized neoliberal femininity, shaped yet remains a space historically dominated by white, male voices.

Abstract

This study attempts to create a cultural strategy to eradicate corruption in Indonesia. Various obstacles to eradicate the culture of corruption in Indonesia along with descriptions of cultural conditions which encourage corruption were easily found. Using a descriptive analytical technique this study tries to reveal corruptive behavior and its scope as well as find a variety of cultural problems. Massive corruption in Indonesia seems to draw us a conclusion that corruption has been the culture of our nation. As a cultural problem, corruption should be carefully addressed within the context of culture. Therefore, a firm model of anti-corruption education, which put emphasis on cultural mentality and formation of anti-corruption behavior for society, is urgently required. Such education should integrate within itself anti-corruption values, which put and see corruption as a common enemy for all. Education as such is expected to form a positive attitude and anti-corruption behavior.
