Abstract

The aim of this research is to find and analyze the point of view utilized in the novel Adele Park Lies Lies Lies. This research utilized structural analysis, which allows the researcher to focus on the underlying patterns present in the text, particularly concerning the point of view. The data were obtained from the novel entitled Lies Lies Lies by Adele Parks and this research focused on exploring how the first-person point of view Daisy character and the third-person point of view Simon character in each other interact and contribute to the overall meaning of the story. In this research, data collection than carried out using several specific techniques including an in-depth reading of the entire novel, collecting data concerning two primary types of point of view found in the novel: first-person singular and third-person singular, identifying the specific points of view, and proceeding to analyze each of the sentences that utilized first-person singular and third-person singular point of view. The technique of analyzing data using a structural approach essential in the context of this research, as it provides a systematic and rigorous method to unravel the intricacies of the novel Lies Lies Lies by Adele Parks. The results showed that in Lies Lies Lies, the use of first-person and third-person point of views allows the reader to experience the story from different point of view. The first-person point of view highlights situations experienced by Daisy throughout the novel, which is her twisted marriage story with her husband, Simon. Abstract

Abstrak: Pemerintah  Kabupaten Gorontalo menetapkan Pantai Biluhu yang terletak di daerah Biluhu Timur sebagai salah satu geosite wisata Geopark di Kabupaten Gorontalo. Potensi desa Biluhu sebagai desa wisata butuh dukungan sumber daya manusia yang mampu mendukung dicanangkannya desa tersebut sebagai desa wisata geopark. Karena itu, pembekalan bahasa asing seperti bahasa Inggris dibutuhkan bagi anak-anak dan para remaja desa tersebut untuk mengantisipasi datangnya wisatawan asing ke tempat itu. Di samping itu, hal lain yang perlu diperhatikan adalah kesadaran masyarakat untuk menjaga lingkungan desa mereka untuk tidak menjadi rusak. Persoalan yang selalu muncul di daerah-daerah wisata di Indonesia adalah masalah sanitasi, seperti ketersediaan air besih, ketersediaan jamban, pengolahan air limbah, pembuangan sampah, dan pencemaran tanah. Kebersihan lingkungan daerah wisata seringkali tidak diperhatikan oleh pemerintah terkait  dan juga masyarakat, padahal hal ini sangat penting untuk menjaga keberlangsungan desa wisata, yang berakibat langsung pada pendapatan masyarakat. Melalui pengabdian yang diintegrasikan dengan KKN mahasiswa digunakan metode pengajaran Bahasa Inggris, lalu  penyuluhan lingkungan dan bersih desa bersama masyarakat. Kata kunci:  desa; wisata; bahasa Inggris; lingkungan Abstract:  The Government of Gorontalo Regency has determined Biluhu Beach which is located in the East Biluhu area as one of geo-site in the future tourism Geopark of Gorontalo Regency. The potential of Biluhu village as a tourism village needs the support of human resources who are able to support the declaration of the village as one of geopark tourism village. Therefore, the knowledge of foreign languages such as English is needed for the children and youth of the village to anticipate the arrival of foreign tourists to the place. On the other hand, another thing that needs to be considered is the awareness of the community to protect their village environment from being damaged. Problems that always arise in tourism areas in Indonesia are sanitation problems, such as the availability of clean water, availability of toilets, wastewater treatment, waste disposal, and soil pollution. Environmental cleanliness of tourism areas is often not considered by the relevant government and also the community, even though this is very important to maintain the sustainability of tourism villages, which has a direct impact on people's income. Through community service that is integrated with students’ KKN is used English teaching methods, then environmental counselling by lectures and students. Moreover, there is an activity of village clean-ups together with the community.Keywords: village; tour; English; environment

Abstract

Toxic masculinity emphasizes men to be tough, strong, avoid showing emotions. Consequently it creates toxic men with no compassion, and justified violent to be dominant. This study aims to observe the representation of toxic masculinity in the film through Steve Rogers character using toxic masculinity theory. This qualitative research used intrinsic approach. The result showed the representation of toxic masculinity in Steve Rogers emphasized several things; 1)man must be tough, strong, and dare to take risk,2)man must pursue their ambitions by any means,3)man must avoid expressing emotions.

Abstract

Kolonialisme telah jauh ditinggalkan oleh bangsa Indoesia, telah lebih dari setengah abad, tetapi jejak kolonial yang terinternalisasi di dalam diri bangsa tidak pernah ditelusuri. Penelusuran ini penting untuk mengenali identitas diri bangsa pascakolonialisme. Tujuan penulisan ini adalah untuk mencari identitas budaya Indonesia Indonesia pascakolonial, dengan menelusuri pengaruh bangsa-bangsa yang datang ke Indonesia di masa lalu dengan menggunakan metode dekonstruksi dan teori Hegemoni Gramsci. Bagaimana bangsa Indonesia kuno memposisikan diri dan diposisikan di dalam perjumpaan dengan bangsa-bangsa yang datang dari luar Indonesia. Untuk menelusuri ini, kita tidak dapat menelusurinya dengan perspektif yang selama ini selalu digunakan. Kita butuh membongkar perspektif itu dengan menggunakan metode dekonstruksi Derrida agar dapat mendudukan peristiwa-peristiwa di dalam sejarah kebudayaan Indonesia. Dengan demikina, kita dapat memperoleh perspektif baru tentang keindonesiaan kita. Teori Hegemoni Gramsci digunakan dalam tulisan ini dalam kaitannya dengan kolonialisme Indonesia. Dengan menggunakan teori hegemoni Gramsci kita dapat menelusuri bahwa kolonialisme tidak selalu dengan cara dominasi dan kekerasan, tetapi dapat dengan cara persuasif dan konsensus sehingga hegemoni terlaksana dengan lentur. Dari hasil penelusuran didapatkan bahwa sebenarnya setiap kedatangan bangsa lain ke Indonesia di masa lalu, hegemoni selalu dipraktekkan dan diterapkan. Namun, tidak setiap bangsa yang masuk ke Indonesia menggunakan hegemoni melalui dominasi dengan kekuatan penuh seperti yang dilakukan oleh bangsa Eropa, sehingga Indonesia selalu mengenang masa-masa penindasan Eropa. Bangsa lain juga datang dengan melakukan hegemoni untuk mengamankan jalur dagang mereka, akan tetapi mereka menggunakan hegemoni dengan cara persuasif dan konsensus.

Abstract

21st-century digital novels, accessible through mobile apps like Webnovel, Dreame, and Play Books, commonly depict women characters as powerless, impoverished stepdaughters or illegitimate children. These prevalent themes in digital novels often reinforce patriarchal norms and present themes of fathers' financial struggles and indebtedness to wealthy families resulted to contract marriage or planned marriage. Employing the approach of feminist literary criticism, this study aims to examine how these novels uphold antiquated perceptions of women's identity. Through the reading strategy of feminist literary criticism is revealed that these digital novels represented the old construction about women identity, perpetuating the idea that women are powerless and financially dependent on men. From the setting of the novel, we know that the offered themes were not only occurred in eastern culture but also in western culture. They depict women as inanimate objects, lacking agency and voice. The narratives promote patriarchy by portraying male power and oppression as protection, often emphasizing material wealth. This notion is strategically disseminated through digital novels, targeting the millennial generation who have easy access to digital media. Consequently, younger women may internalize these ideas and accept their subjugated role. Instead, digital novels should empower women to navigate patriarchal constraints and depict men who respect and support women's autonomy, challenging traditional gender norms. While the study employs feminist literary criticism as the reading strategy, it's important to acknowledge that different theoretical frameworks or approaches may provide alternative interpretations of the novels. Recognizing the limitations and potential biases of the chosen methodology could lead to a more balanced analysis.

Abstract

Today's globalization eliminates time, space, distance, and national barriers. The two novels examined in this study implied those issues. The objective of this study is to analyze the territorial boundaries, spatial dimensions, and temporal aspects that evoke a profound impact in Robinson Crusoe and Life of Pi, employing a postcolonial perspective. Both of these works originated from a shared concept, specifically the theme of being stranded as a result of a shipwreck. However, these novels were written throughout distinct times spanning several centuries. Robinson Crusoe was published in the 18th century, whilst Life of Pi was published during the 21st century. The similar concept of "Castaway" does not imply the creation of an identical narrative. The level of precision in the portrayal of territorial boundaries, space, and time in these two works is noteworthy, but they exhibit certain distinctions. The narrative of Robinson Crusoe prominently features people embodying the roles of master and slave, hence highlighting the concept of social boundaries. Contrarily, Life of Pi explores the ambiguous nature of borders about territory, space, and time, as they are consistently subject to dispute. Consequently, the delineation of power dynamics between characters is likewise a matter of contestation. In conclusion, these two novels convey two different ideologies by territory, space, and time considered through the lens of post-colonialism. The span of centuries demonstrates the diversity of human interpretations of them. Robinson Crusoe conveys the idea that colonialism is inevitable. Meanwhile, Life of Pi interprets colonialism as cruelty.

Abstract

The translation of prophets' names in the Quran often differs from their original form, with English translations frequently aligning more closely with the biblical figures. This raises the question of whether these translations still accurately reflect the Quranic depiction of the prophets. This study aims to examine the translation strategies applied by M.A.S. Abdel Haleem in translating the names of the twenty-five prophets in his 2004 English rendition of the Quran and how these translations maintain the intended meaning. The research employs a 'Function-Oriented' translation approach, which focuses on the socio-cultural function of translation within the recipient's context. Using Hermans' (1988) four strategies for translating proper names—pure borrowing, naturalization, adaptation, and literal translation—Abdel Haleem applies the naturalized strategy to nine prophet names and the adaptation strategy to sixteen names. These strategies enable the translation to remain culturally appropriate and intelligible for the target audience while still representing the Quranic names. The study highlights the cultural challenges inherent in translation, as understanding the names depends on the target culture, necessitating a shared cultural understanding between the translator and reader. This research contributes to translation practices by emphasizing the importance of balancing linguistic fidelity and cultural adaptation in religious texts.

Abstract

Biluhu merupakan salah satu daerah di Kabupaten Gorontalo yang berhadapan dengan Teluk Tomini. Daerah ini menjadi daya tarik wisatawan karena keindahan pantai dan laguna pesisirnya yang merupakan bagian dari kawasan wisata Biluhu Timur, serta objek wisata pantai lainnya di kawasan Teluk Tomini. Tempat wisata ini sangat menarik untuk dijadikan inspirasi bagi siswa SMA untuk menulis, karena Sekolah Menengah Atas umumnya menyelenggarakan program literasi yang melibatkan kegiatan membaca dan menulis. Pemanfaatan tempat wisata sebagai inspirasi penciptaan puisi merupakan program yang sangat bermanfaat bagi siswa SMA karena dapat menumbuhkan kreativitas menulis mereka. Tujuan dari kegiatan Pengabdian pada Masyarakat ini adalah untuk membekali siswa SMA dengan keterampilan memanfaatkan tempat wisata setempat sebagai inspirasi puisi, sehingga dapat menumbuhkan daya imajinasi dan meningkatkan keterampilan menulis dalam Bahasa Inggris. Dalam pelatihan ini, dosen dari perguruan tinggi setempat memberikan materi pembelajaran kepada siswa untuk menjelaskan sesuatu dan memanfaatkan bahasa kiasan, imaji, dan unsur-unsur puisi lainnya dalam karya mereka. Terakhir, dosen meminta siswa untuk membacakan puisi yang telah mereka buat setelah melalui proses koreksi.

Abstract

Boalemo Regency selected the Bajo-Tilamuta Ethnic Village as a Cultural Diversity site for the Gorontalo Geopark due to the uniqueness of this ethnic group's way of life. The Bajo-Tilamuta tribe, one of the Bajo tribes, can be found on the coast of Gorontalo Province, specifically in Boalemo Regency. Despite residing on the coast, the Bajo-Tilamuta tribe remains isolated and distant from the broader population's settlements. However, the intensity of meetings between the Bajo and Gorontalo tribes often occurs through activities as fishermen and marriages between the Bajo and Gorontalo tribes. The Bajo tribe is known as a nomadic tribe at sea. Because of its spread beyond national borders, this tribe is known as a free border crosser. The Bajo tribe's reliance on the sea for shelter has led to their spread to various parts of the world, particularly in Southeast Asia. In the past, the Bajo tribe was known for exclusively living at sea, meaning they were born, lived, and died on boats. The Bajo people's way of life has now changed. Although the Bajo people still live on the sea's edge, their lives tend to settle in one place, leading many of their children to attend school and become graduates. The potential of the Bajo village as an ethnic geopark village hinges on the availability of human resources capable of supporting the village's designation as a geopark tourism village. Therefore, children and teenagers in the Bajo-Tilamuta Village require foreign language training, such as English. We take this action to prepare for the potential arrival of foreign tourists in the future. Through community service integrated with KKN (Community Service Program), students use the English teaching method for young learners by introducing maritime English vocabulary whose objects are in the daily lives of the Bajo Community, namely the sea and its environment.
