Abstract

The painful loss can influence one character's development as described by psychological fiction work. Coleen Hoover's book Ugly Love follows the protagonist's emotional journey following the deaths of his mother and kid. The purpose of this study is to investigate the psychological effects of grieving on the main character, Miles Archer using Kübler-Ross's theory of the grief five stages. Using qualitative method and a literary psychology approach, this study traces the main character's journey to acceptance while examining how his self-destructive actions and relationship patterns reflect unresolved grief. The findings of this study are showing that the main character attempts to confront his trauma, seek reconciliation, and begin emotional healing. This study highlights how stories related to grief in literature can reflect people’s emotional experiences in real life, which reveals the deep grief. According to the study's findings, addressing the psychological effects of loss in fictional characters shows the effects of personal development and wholesome relationships.

Abstract

Lack of affection from both parents and also the loss of someone who is deeply loved can cause someone to withdraw from social interactions. Someone who withdraws from social interactions, especially teenagers, can result in them becoming victims of bullying. The consequences of this bullying can have an impact on the victim’s mental health. This study aims to describe the types of bullying experienced by Cassandra, the main character in the novel The Nerd Can Fight. This study uses the theory of personality structure by Sigmund Freud and a psychoanalytic/psychological approach. Due to the death of her brother, Cassandra feels lost, guilty, traumatized, and upset, so she withdraws more from her friends. The results of the study concluded that three types of bullying in the novel The Nerd Can Fight, namely verbal bullying, physical bullying, and mental or psychological bullying experienced by the main character, Cassandra; she can defend herself against it by avoiding conflict, not responding to the bullying, not caring, and being indifferent. This attitude arises because she has a role model, namely her brother, and the presence of her best friend, Adam, makes the main character, Cassandra, able to defend herself from bullying.

Abstract

Folk tales, such as myths and legends, generally contain the wisdom of their people, which can serve as a reflection of constructing a society today. Generally, myths and legends in Indonesia feature women as important characters. In Indonesian myths and legends, women are often associated with the origin of places or the emergence of certain plants. The Gorontalo people have a legend about the first female leader in the region, Tolangohula. This female leader united small kingdoms under her authority. This research aims to reconstruct the existence of female leaders in Gorontalo in the past, which have been forgotten through the oral literature of the Gorontalo people. This reconstruction is expected to explore the role and values of female leadership in legends so that these leadership values can serve as a basic example for the formation of leadership character, especially in Gorontalo, through its rich oral literature. This reconstruction is also expected to demonstrate how Gorontalo society positioned women as leaders in the past. This study uses representation theory to demonstrate how female leaders are represented in Gorontalo’s folk legends. The oral tradition as history was employed in this study’s method. This method demonstrates that oral stories from the folk can serve as a benchmark for delving into the cultural history of a region that does not have a written tradition in their society culture. The findings demonstrate that the legends about female leaders were being forgotten from the interviews with some people in Gorontalo. The representation of female leaders through legends is positioned within the discourse after the colonial era. Despite this, the values of female leadership have left a legacy that aids in the development of a leader's character.

This study was a qualitative descriptive study using the approach of Sociology of Literature. The data was collected through note-taking method which was primary obtained from the novel of Jane Austen Persuasion. It was then analysed using the sociology of literature by only focusing on the sociology of the work aspect. The results of the study showed that there were discriminations and judgements towards the character of Frederick due to his social status. However, Frederick's character who was dealing with a society that prioritised great importance on social status was not affected by the assessment directed at him. The character of Frederick has reflected the value of social, such as tolerating and dedicating as the opposition of values that he had to receive. Hence, the judgement which emerged had no bad influence at all in the development of his character.
