Abstract

The purpose of this research was to determine the correlation between students’ self-confidence and speaking ability at SMA Negeri 1 Peling Tengah. The design of this research was quantitative research with the name correlational design. The population of this research were students of class XI SMA Negeri 1 Peling Tengah and the sample was class XI science students, totaling 25 students. In collecting data, the researcher used a questionnaire and speaking scores from the English teacher. The researcher used SPSS 23 for the correlation between students’ self-confidence and speaking ability. After analyzing the questionnaire data, the result or rxy of 0.87 were obtained, the results of a signifinance level of 5% from rtable were 0.413. Therefore the rxy value was higher than the rtable value; 0.87>0.413. It is assumed that there is a correlation between students’ self-confidence and speaking ability at SMA Negeri 1 Peling Tengah in the academic year of 2021. The level of correlation coefficient between variable X and variable Y is 87%, which is a very high correlation or has a correlation.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of online games on the English skills of students of the English Language Education Study Program at Muhammadiyah Luwuk University. This study used a qualitative approach as a research method, the subjects of this study were 10 active students of the English Language Education Study Program at Muhammadiyah Luwuk University. This research purpose is to find out the effect of online games on English skills. In order to analyze the data, the researchers conducted interviews and took notes from video game recordings. As a result of this research. Researchers found that online games have a significant effect on improving English language skills. The effect are students can learn and practice their English skills such as speaking, reading, listening, and writing skill. Therefore, students can improve their English skills because in the game participants can use this as a means of learning and practicing English skills.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to measure the implementation of authentic materials in improving students’ reading comprehension of the eighth grade students at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri Sausu. This research used quasi-experimental design.  It treated two classes namely experimental and control class. This quasi experimental research took 34 students of grade VIII B for the experimental class and 32 students of grade VIII A for the control. In choosing class to be a sample, this study used purposive sampling technique. This study used research instrument to collect data, namely questionnaire items and test. The result of data analysis indicate that the students’ mean score of the posttest is 66.9 in experimental class is higher than the mean score of the control class 52.5. It means that the students’ reading comprehension is improved because of  implementing the authentic materials since the mean score of pretest is significantly different from the mean score of posttest. In conclusion, the implementation of Authentic Materials can improve students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

This research aims at proving that the use of SQ4R method improves the critical reading ability of the grade XI MIA of MAN 1 Sausu. The method used in this research was quasi-experimental research design. The sample of the research was selected by using purposive sampling technique, in which the researcher intentionally chose grade XI MIA 2 as experimental class and XI MIA 4 as control class. The instruments of data collection were questionnaire items, interview items and tests. The data were analyzed by using t-test statistical and descriptive methods. Based on the results of the tests, the mean score of the experimental class is 80.38, while the mean score of the control class is 71.  Furthermore, based on the result of questionnaire, there were 96% students decided the implementation of SQ4R method had given contribution to improve their thinking and reading critical ability, then considered that the practice of SQ4R method was very effective for them. In other words, applying SQ4R method affects students’ critical reading comprehension of the grade XI MIA of MAN 1 Sausu

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the differences between English and students’ transcriptions and factors affecting English pronunciation. The researcher used a qualitative research method in this research which consisted of five students of English Education Study Program of Muhammadiyah Luwuk who were from Banggainese as the subjects. In collecting data, the researcher used the interview as an instrument. The findings of this research showed there are some differences between English and students’ transcriptions, i.e. there are mispronunciations. One of the causes is the effect of the mother tongue. Additionally, the researcher also found that there are four factors affecting English pronunciation, they are: age, the first, language, the learners’ motivation and attitude, and the teachers’ instruction in the target language.
