Abstract

The aim of this research is to measure the implementation of authentic materials in improving students’ reading comprehension of the eighth grade students at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri Sausu. This research used quasi-experimental design.  It treated two classes namely experimental and control class. This quasi experimental research took 34 students of grade VIII B for the experimental class and 32 students of grade VIII A for the control. In choosing class to be a sample, this study used purposive sampling technique. This study used research instrument to collect data, namely questionnaire items and test. The result of data analysis indicate that the students’ mean score of the posttest is 66.9 in experimental class is higher than the mean score of the control class 52.5. It means that the students’ reading comprehension is improved because of  implementing the authentic materials since the mean score of pretest is significantly different from the mean score of posttest. In conclusion, the implementation of Authentic Materials can improve students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

Abstract

Understanding student’s language communicative behaviors is crucial to explain why some students might have more willingness to communicate (WTC) when they are learning English than other students. WTC is one important factor contributing to student’s success in developing their speaking skills with its relation to other aspects. This study intended to examine the level of students’ willingness to communicate during a speaking class, WTC outside the classroom, communication confidence, and international posture and to see the correlation among those variables. The data were collected through a questionnaire adapted from a willingness to communicate in the L2 scale. The result shows that most Indonesian students majoring in English Education at Yogyakarta State University in the Special Region of Yogyakarta have a high willingness to communicate during a speaking class as well as international posture. Furthermore, half of the students have high and moderate willingness to communicate outside the classroom and communication confidence. However, there is only one correlation among those variables that is found significant which is a correlation between WTC during a speaking class and communication confidence. Since this study did not find any participant who had a low rank for all the variables tested, this study has limitations in explaining the path from low to high level of the four variables.

Abstract

Pronunciation plays a vital role in oral communication; yet, many Indonesian learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) continue to face difficulties, particularly in articulating fricative consonants that are absent from their native language. This study investigates the pronunciation problems experienced by second-semester students of the English Department at Makassar Muhammadiyah University, with a specific focus on English fricative consonants. Employing a mixed-method approach, data were gathered through a pronunciation test, interviews, and audio recordings. The findings indicate that dental fricatives /θ/ and /ð/ are the most problematic, often substituted with /t/ and /d/ due to first-language interference and limited exposure to pronunciation models. Additional contributing factors include a lack of articulatory awareness, insufficient phonetic training, and minimal practice. These results suggest the need for more explicit instruction and guided pronunciation practice to improve learners’ phonological competence. The study provides practical insights for English instructors to enhance pronunciation-focused pedagogy and curriculum development

Abstract

Mastering English from an early age has many benefits, especially if taught in elementary school. By mastering English, children will have greater opportunities in the future. This service aims to improve the English proficiency of elementary school children in Sausu Taliabo Village from the age of 7 to 10 years through the Family Members song. Songs have great potential in language learning. Through songs, the learning atmosphere will be more fun and make children more motivated to actively participate in learning. Using songs can improve children's memory, understand vocabulary, help to develop pronouncation skills with clear intonation and also provide a meaningful and unforgettable learning experience. This activity goes through several stages, namely preparation, teaching, and evaluation. The application of songs in English learning has proven to be successful in creating a creative and innovative learning experience for children who live in Sausu Talibo Village, Parigi Moutong District, Central Sulawesi.
