Abstract

This research is aimed at investigating the role of Islamic studies in promoting inclusive citizenship in the context of Islamic schools in Indonesia and the United States. Islamic schools have been seen in a rather negative or pessimistic manner due to the sweeping accusation of them being a place for Islamic conservatism. Meanwhile, the currently increasing diversity of society inspirits citizenship to be more inclusive, not only does the state impose equality amongst citizens, but also citizens develop respect and solidarity to others. Through this qualitative research conducted in both contexts, this study found that Islamic studies to a larger extent were designed to educate students to become inclusive citizens. Islam introduced in the textbooks in a weekend Islamic school in the US looks more open to a deeper interreligious relationship because, as a minority, Muslims are eager to display a more friendly Islam to respond to social demands and stigmatization. This study confirms anthropological studies that argue for the plurality of Islam in the domains of interpretations and practices bounded in historical, social and political contexts.

Abstract

This study explores leadership practices in different Islamic schools in Southern Thailand, an area where already for decades an ethno-political conflict has been ongoing between Malay Muslims and the Thai Buddhist government. Using a multiple-case study approach, this research selected three Islamic schools one each in the provinces of Pattani, Narathiwat and Yala selecting their principals, teachers, and students as informants. The findings suggest that the principals, in their planning activities, tend to think strategically for the benefit of their schools, their students, and the community at large, that they are willing to compromise with the government so long as not contradicting their religious beliefs and principles, and that they have a strong vision for the school improvement. Under difficult conditions, they always consider the need to establish immediate and more extensive cooperation with various stakeholders to help further improve the school conditions and their output.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v24i2.4608

Abstract

This paper is drawn from a larger study of Banjarese experiences in performing ḥajj or pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia. This phenomenological study employed in-depth interviews with about 50 informants in two different areas where Banjarese populations are concentrated, i.e. South Kalimantan and Indragiri Hilir. The theme of the commodification of rituals including ojek ḥajar aswad and badal haji emerged from the comprehensive data analysis. In theory, commodification refers to the practice to turn something into a commodity. In the experiences of some Banjarese pilgrims, commodified rituals have the importance of both spiritual enhancement and social pride, even though these practices sometimes involve cheating and manipulation from the side of the service providers. So, not only do ḥajj rituals provide sacred experiences for the pilgrims, but also an opportunity for some to make profits from them even through unethical or illegal conduct.

Abstract

This paper discusses the concept of instructional school leadership introduced by the government to schools in Indonesia as part of a larger educational reform since 2019. Although the spirit of employing a type of instructional leadership has been quite strong from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (MOECRT), a solid and thoughtful concept is hardly found. Therefore, this paper uses a training material that was incorporated in the Guru Penggerak training which includes a slide for instructional leadership. We analyse this material in the light of the evolving theories of instructional leadership in the literature, contextual demands and changes occurring surrounding schools. We found that Rutherford’s concept of instructional leadership used in the ‘Guru Penggerak’ training does not seem to be in line with the literature since it is too broadly conceptualised and does not at all touch the very core business of classroom and instruction

Abstract

Due to the limitations of accounting textbooks, students do not realize a broader potential of accounting can make to society outside a scorekeeping practice ascribing priority to shareholders. The purpose of this study is to explore how students in Indonesia use the recommended introductory financial accounting (IFA) textbook to understand whether they use it in a way that allows a more nuanced, contextual and broad-based understanding of accounting. Drawing on the results of four focus groups conducted with students who represent four accounting degrees of Indonesian universities, the study reveals that students are strongly attached to the recommended textbook. It seemed they could not get away from having to use the text if they were to succeed in the course. Therefore, the intellectual source of these students was solely the neoclassical economic paradigm, the primary emphasis of which is satisfying the materialist desires of shareholders. This was evident in the perspectives of both students of conventional and Islamic accounting programs.

Abstract

Objective The paper seeks to evaluate the perceptions and attitudes of individuals involved in the production of accounting textbooks about providing cultural pluralism in the textbooks.Methodology This paper used semi-structured interviews with key actors of accounting textbook production, including translators, independent reviewers, adaptors, authors and commissioning editors. With one exception, all interviewees are also academics at universities. Results The paper finds that accounting textbooks are cultural and political artifacts that reflect the the cultural, political, and ideological viewpoints of the powerful groups in the world. In other words, the textbook contents are the results of power domination. They have used accounting textbooks as powerful educational media to homogenise cultural and ethical values of accounting and accounting education to be solely based on Anglo-American capitalism. This has greatly affected the professionals involved in the textbook production. Therefore, it is not an urgent matter for them to incorporate diversity of perspectives into accounting textbooks used in Indonesia.Novelty/Originality Although accounting research has explored the issues of accounting textbooks, such as the readability, price, selection, and use, studies that consider the political and cultural role of accounting textbooks especially from the perspective of individual involved in the textbook production are still scant. In particular, there is no research in Indonesia that presents the views of people who produce accounting textbooks regarding the content of their textbooks.

Abstract

In the era of digital transformation, lecturers have a strategic role as facilitators and innovators in the learning process to create an academic environment that is adaptive to technological developments. This study aims to analyze the role of lecturers in developing technology-based learning innovations at the Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Ekonomi (STIEPAN). This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data collection techniques are carried out through three main methods, namely semi-structured in-depth interviews, non-participatory observation, and documentation. Data analysis uses the Miles and Huberman model, which consists of data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions, supported by NVivo 12 software for coding and categorizing findings. The research results show that lecturers at STIEPAN have utilized various digital technologies, such as the Academic Information System (SIAKAD), online conferencing applications, and academic social media, to enhance interaction, effectiveness, and flexibility in learning. However, some obstacles were also found, such as limited technological competence and supporting facilities. Overall, this study emphasizes the importance of improving lecturers' digital literacy as well as institutional support in promoting sustainable learning innovation at higher education institutions
