Abstract

This study aimed to examine the relationship between operative duration and the incidence of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) among nurses working in the Central Operating Room of Kajen and Kesesi Regional Hospitals, Pekalongan Regency. A quantitative empirical approach with a correlational design was applied, involving 51 nurses selected through total sampling. Data were collected using structured observation to measure operative duration in monthly hours and the validated Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (Quick DASH) questionnaire to assess CTS-related functional impairment. Statistical analysis using Spearman Rank test revealed a significant and strong positive relationship between operative duration and CTS incidence. These findings indicate that prolonged exposure to operative activities increases biomechanical stress on the median nerve, leading to functional impairment. The study highlights the importance of ergonomic interventions, workload management, and early detection strategies in preventing CTS among operating room nurses. This research contributes to occupational nursing science by providing empirical evidence and proposing a context-based preventive model relevant to hospital settings.

Abstract

Pain is a common problem experienced by patients after undergoing Caesarean Section (CS) due to surgical incision of the abdominal wall and uterus. Poorly managed postoperative pain may limit mobilization, disturb rest, and delay maternal recovery. One non-pharmacological intervention that can be applied to reduce pain intensity is the deep breathing relaxation technique. This mini research aimed to describe pain intensity in post Caesarean Section patients after the application of deep breathing relaxation. This study used a case study approach involving five patients on the first day after Caesarean Section surgery. Pain assessment was conducted using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) before and after the intervention over three days of care. The results showed that before the intervention, all patients experienced moderate to severe pain with pain scores ranging from 5 to 8. After the implementation of deep breathing relaxation for 3x24 hours, a gradual reduction in pain intensity was observed in all patients. On the third day of evaluation, pain scores decreased to 2-3, which were categorized as mild pain. Patients appeared more relaxed, facial expressions of pain were reduced, and they were able to perform light mobilization more comfortably. In conclusion, deep breathing relaxation is effective as a non-pharmacological nursing intervention to help reduce pain intensity in post Caesarean Section patients

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP) is one of the most common nosocomial infections among patients receiving mechanical ventilation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Mechanical ventilation increases the risk of bacterial colonization in the oral cavity and upper respiratory tract, which may subsequently lead to VAP. Oral hygiene is recommended as part of the VAP prevention bundle to maintain oral cleanliness and reduce pathogenic bacterial colonization. Objective: To describe the implementation of oral hygiene for the prevention of VAP among patients receiving mechanical ventilation in the ICU of Santosa Hospital Bandung Kopo. Methods: This descriptive case study involved four patients receiving mechanical ventilation in the ICU of Santosa Hospital Bandung Kopo. Oral hygiene using 0.2% chlorhexidine was administered three times daily for two consecutive days according to the hospital's Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). Clinical Pulmonary Infection Score (CPIS) was measured before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed descriptively by comparing CPIS values before and after oral hygiene. Results: Baseline CPIS scores ranged from 3 to 5. Following the intervention, two patients demonstrated a reduction in CPIS scores, from 4 to 3 and from 5 to 2, while the remaining two patients showed no change in their CPIS scores. All patients maintained CPIS values below 6 before and after the intervention, and no increase in CPIS scores was observed during the observation period. Conclusion: Oral hygiene using 0.2% chlorhexidine, performed according to the hospital's SOP, contributed to maintaining patients' clinical condition and supported efforts to prevent VAP among mechanically ventilated patients.
