Abstract

This paper discusses the bonding of father and daughter in Angela Carter?s ?The Courtship of Mr. Lyon? and Intan Paramaditha?s ?Pintu Merah? (transl. ?The Red Door?). Carter and Paramaditha employ distinguished narrative structures to highlight the interaction among the characters. They utilizes third-person narrator and reproduces fairy tales. The absence of mother becomes an interesting pivot in both stories. In that situation, father is inevitably the daughter?s closest figure. In both stories, fathers are at the same time demanding and lame. While, daughters are those dependent, submissive yet tactical figures in facing their fathers as the sole counterparts in the story. Using the perspectives of Juliett Michelle and Nancy Chodorow on psychoanalysis feminism, this paper unveils the roles of father in daughter?s adolescent development. This study reveals that despite the dependencies of the daughters toward the familial relationship, they use their submissiveness as the weapons to break the patriarchal values represented by the fathers.

Abstract

This study sheds light on how Ma, the female character in Emma Donoghue’s Room negotiates her roles as a mother of a five-years-old Jack while living inside a constraining room built by Nick, her kidnapper. It particularly focuses on how Ma attempts to re-define her motherhood within built and discursive spaces that Nick constructs. The study employs the concepts of Sarah Ruddick on maternal thinking and Marsha Marotta’s MotherSpace. Marrota delineates two spatial aspects contributing to shape mother’s subjectivity; built spaces and discursive spaces. Built space is the 11x11m room representing Nick’s authority. Nick also partly constructs the discursive space within the room. The finding shows that Ma is able to create her own discursive space as her effort of conforming her motherhood, within the constraining built space. Ma successfully performs her sense of motherhood – such as providing him physical needs like nutritious food and nurturing his cognitive development.

Abstract

The internationalization of education in Indonesia faces challenges such as disparities in quality, inadequate curricula, language barriers, and limited recognition of qualifications. Additionally, managing cultural, ethnic, and linguistic diversity leads to discrimination, inequality of access, and a lack of cultural representation in the curriculum. This study aims to analyze the root causes of multicultural education issues in Indonesia, focusing on Sandur Art as an effort to internalize multicultural values. A historical-descriptive method is used to trace the relationship between perceptions, acceptance, problem-solving attitudes, independence, creativity, and inspiration in promoting multicultural awareness. The research results show that Sandur Art can build a positive perception, acceptance, and problem-solving attitude towards cultural diversity through its rich symbolism and collaborative practices. The values of independence and creativity in Sandur Art also foster the creation of an inclusive educational environment. In conclusion, integrating Sandur Art into education can effectively shape globally competent and inclusive citizens. This study contributes to expanding the understanding of the role of traditional arts in supporting multicultural education in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study investigates how game mechanics influence gender performance through clothing choices in Empress's Choice. The game was first launched on mobile devices, chromebook, and tablets in June 2022. Players would be able to enjoy the game on a variety of platforms. This study employs content analysis to explore game mechanics and in-game elements, specifically focusing on how they affect the players' construction of their characters' gender. The analysis is limited to chapters featuring dressing-up and destiny event stages, where clothing choices are central to gameplay. Judith Butler's theory of performativity is a framework to examine whether the game reinforces traditional gender norms or encourages players to subvert them. The findings reveal that, despite the game's emphasis on player choices, the mechanics, especially those related to clothing and its associated features, still largely adhere to conventional gender expectations. The main character (player) is constructed to be female by repeatedly donning feminine clothes in mostly bright colors and elaborate accessories. All categories of clothing (type, color, and accessories) in the game have a particular bias towards traditional feminine elements. Therefore, during dress-up stages, players have limited choices in gender expression besides the feminine style dictated by the mechanics. However, the in-game actions, part of destiny events, show a contrasting experience. These events give players choices that impact the story without imposing specific gendered behaviors. This complexity indicates that limitations and opportunities to challenge gender norms exist in Empress's Choice through its game mechanics.
