Abstract

Instagram has been one of the main platforms for real-time information seeking for the last five years (Schroeder, 2018). The kind of information that people look for includes entertainment news. The present study aims to examine the way an entertainment news account presents its news content using different pragmatic techniques and how these techniques affect its brand image because minor attention has been paid to purpose-oriented accounts. To fulfill the aim, there are two research problems that are addressed: (1) what are the most common pragmatic techniques used in the captions? And (2) what significance does each technique have in presenting the news and shaping the brand image? Therefore, 36 sample captions from E! News Instagram account, as the most followed entertainment news account on Instagram, were taken, observed, and analyzed using a framework developed by Al-Hindawi and Mehdi (2017) in their article about a pragmatic analysis on American and British website-based entertainment news that focuses on three pragmatic pillars, namely presupposition, Grice’s conversational maxims, and allusion. The study found that in the case of E! News, presupposition, violation to Grice’s conversational maxims, and allusion are not merely used to keep the content interesting, but they respectively hold important roles in shaping the content of the news, engaging audience’s interest, and creating a good brand image.

Abstract

Many studies have revealed how Japanese speakers pronounce English words differently. However, not much research has explained the causes of the difference, let alone relating such difference with native language interference. By drawing a comparison between the sound structures of the English and Japanese languages using Contrastive Analysis Hypothesis (CAH), we will see how native language may influence foreign language usage and cause pronunciation differences in popular songs. Transcriptions of three AKB48’s songs – Heavy Rotation, Sugar Rush, and Namida Surprise – will be used as the data sources to determine native language interference. Our findings show that additions of vowel sounds, changes of syllable, changes of height and place of vowel articulation, replacements of a consonant with another consonant, and elisions of consonants happened to the English words across the three songs. These phonetic changes should inform discussions about the relationship between lyrics and melody in songs that incorporate two or more languages (i.e., bilingual).

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi kesiapan dan kebutuhan guru dalam meningkatkan profesionalitas mereka dalam mengajarkan Bahasa Inggris kepada siswa-siswa disleksia. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian metode campuran. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah kuesioner yang didistribusikan secara daring. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kesiapan guru dalam konteks pengetahuan dan keterampilan mengajar Bahasa Inggris kepada siswa disleksia. Selanjutnya, kebutuhan profesional guru menunjukkan bahwa mayoritas guru belum memiliki pengetahuan yang memadai tentang cara mengajar Bahasa Inggris untuk siswa disleksia karena mereka tidak memperoleh pengetahuan baik di perguruan tinggi, pelatihan profesional guru, atau mempelajarinya secara mandiri.  Para guru melaporkan preferensi format pelatihan profesional yang meliputi sumber belajar mandiri baik dalam bentuk bentuk cetak dan digital, pelatihan tatap maya dan tatap muka, dan panduan untuk orang tua di rumah. Selain itu, materi pelatihan yang dibutuhkan adalah karakteristik disleksia, kesulitan belajar lain yang berhubungan dengan disleksia, tantangan siswa disleksia dalam belajar bahasa asing, cara diagnosis disleksia, strategi mengajar siswa disleksia, dan tips dan manajemen kelas. Terakhir, terdapat beragam aktifitas yang dipandang mampu meningkatkan kemampuan guru yang diantaranya yaitu kuliah singkat, membaca artikel, membaca buku, membaca materi digital, menonton video pembelajaran dan wawancara terhadap siswa disleksia dan guru yang mengajar siswa disleksia, mengevaluasi materi ajar, merancang dan mengevaluasi rencana pembelajaran.

Abstract

Perubahan pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris yang dilakukan sepenuhnya daring menjadi pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris hybrid dilakukan sebagai salah satu upaya untuk mengatasi penurunan kemampuan dan perilaku siswa. Namun, tidak terdapat jaminan bahwa mmplementasi pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris hybrid dapat berjalan secara efektif khusunya terhadap siswa berkebutuhan khusus. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui penerapan pembelajaran hybrid di kelas bahasa Inggris di salah satu SMP di Kota Depok yang menerapkan program pendidikan inklusif. Metode yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Pengumpulan data menggunakan wawancara dan observasi. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar peserta didik baik siswa regular dan siswa berkebutuhan khusus lebih memilih sesi tatap muka di kelas dibanding sesi daring. Alasannya adalah kemudahan dalam memahami materi, bertanya kepada guru dan sesama siswa, serta memperoleh penjelasan dan umpan balik dari guru. Sedangkan siswa yang lebih memilih sesi daring lebih menonjolkan keleluasaan waktu dan tempat untuk belajar. The transformation from fully online English learning to hybrid English learning has carried as an effort to overcome the decline in students ability to learn English and their behavior. However, there is no guarantee that the implementation of hybrid English learning can run effectively, especially for students with special needs. This research aims to investigate the implementation of hybrid learning in an English class in one of the inclusive schools in Depok. The method used is descriptive qualitative. Data collection used interviews and observation. This research revealed that most students, both regular students and special needs students, prefer face-to-face sessions in the classroom rather than online sessions. Students reasons for choosing face-to-face sessions were the ease of understanding the material, asking the teacher and fellow students, and obtaining explanations and feedback from the teacher. Meanwhile, students who prefer online sessions highlighted the flexibility of time and place to study.

Abstract

The investigation reported in this article aims to point out how the lexical and sub-lexical route are employed in normal beginning reading in Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian) and to identify reading performance that may suggest the occurrence of impaired reading in Bahasa Indonesia which is possibly displayed by the children with the lowest reading performance. Ten typical developing third-grade students participated in the study. Error pattems of those ten students are analysed for the error analysis and for the analysis on the relationship between psycholinguistic variables and reading perforrnance. Five of those students were recorded during the reading part and the data were used in the latency analysis. The prelirninary findings reported here seem to show that beginning reading in Bahasa Indonesia is characterised by the utilization of the sub-lexical route and more skilled reading by lexical route. The development of the lexical route depends on the development of the sublexical route which is influenced by the complexity of the Grapheme Phoneme Correspondence. The lexical route for words with simple graphemes is developed first, the lexical route for words with consonant clusters are developed later. The last to be developed is the lexical route for words with digraphi. Furthermore, Late AoA, imageability, syllable number, and resemblance to words influence the lexical processing of the stimuli in the test. Impaired reading seems to be characterised by less developed sub-lexical route as evidenced by difliculties with words containing consonant clusters and digraphs and longer latencies for reading aloud words and pseudowords.Keywords: psycholinguistics, reading performance

Abstract

To attract global multilingual audiences, English lyrics had been included in K-Pop songs for decades as a strategy (Lauren, 2018; Sea, 2018). This paper analyzed the English usage of “All Night”, “Blue Flame”, and “Knock” by ASTRO, a third-generation K-Pop group from a non-mainstream agency to examine code-switching and the global recognition of K-Pop songs. All songs were examined by using code-switching theories from Poplack (1980) and Bullock and Toribio (2009) and other theories on function analysis by Lawrence (2010) and Lee (2004) and comment analysis by Fernandez-Martinez et al. (2014) and Kwon (2019). The findings revealed that the majority of code switches in “All Night” and “Blue Flame” were inter-sentential, yet “All Night” and “Knock” were more similar in utilizing English by having a new function (i.e., emphasizing a dialog from one’s perspective), an important addition to Lee’s (2004) functions. Furthermore, from the usage and function analysis and the comment analysis, the audience responses seemed to be influenced by the singers’ mispronunciations and the non-existence of a new function that failed to create uniqueness in English usage in “Blue Flame,” which may have led to the song’s failure to win awards. In conclusion, the research suggested that, in the near-absence of promotional support from the agency, the interplay among the number of switches, accurate pronunciations, and a new English-switching function seemed to play an important role in making “All Night” and “Knock” popular among multilingual audiences.

Abstract

A 12-year-old boy received a diagnosis of an unspecified "language disorder," suggesting the possibility of Specific Language Impairment (SLI) along with atypical pausing behavior. Interested to find out the possibility of incorporating pausing behavior into SLI diagnosis, this research sought to explore the distinctions in pause patterns between the spoken Bahasa Indonesia (BI) and English of Indonesian children, utilizing data from the child with suspected SLI (sSLI) and a control group for comparative analysis. Employing a quantitative approach and analyses related to phonology, syntax, and bilingual language production, the study revealed that the child with sSLI tended to display longer and more frequent pauses than the control group, particularly during communication in BI. Despite multiple influencing factors, pause patterns had the potential to serve as an indicative tool and a means to integrate bilingualism into the diagnosis of SLI.

Abstract

The flexibility of utterance structure can be influenced by semantic factors. At this level, structures can vary in terms of the positions of the constituents, namely subject, predicate, or object. To see how far semantics plays a role in the flexibility of structures, this research aims to investigate how the semantic reversibility of agent-target influences the structure of the resulting BISINDO Yogyakarta signs. The data source for this research was video-recorded signs that had been transcribed into utterances. The data collection instrument used was a collection of pictures that was used to stimulate deaf individuals to produce signed utterances. The results showed that there were differences in the resulting structure. (1) Non-reversible utterance structures tended to produce single-clauses with various patterns dominated by SPO and SOP structures. This diversity was predominantly influenced by the classification of targets, appropriate hand movements, and the omission of the agents. Meanwhile, reversible stimuli tended to produce two structures, namely single-clauses dominated by SPO and multi-clauses dominated by SPO P. The multi-clause structure was the structure that dominated reversible utterances. The complexity of the structure of this reversible content was characterized by an agent-target indexical description, and the involvement of actions/expressions of action targets. This proved the notion that the indexical description found in almost all multi-clause structures was the preference of deaf individuals in avoiding potential ambiguity between agent-target. Just like spoken languages universally, sign languages such as BISINDO in the Yogyakarta region and BISINDO in the Jakarta region also shared linguistic features.

Abstract

This study aimed to obtain the characteristics of verb structure in the speech of Indonesian speakers with Broca’s aphasia and their relation to the Argument Structure Complexity Hypothesis (ASCH) and grammatical encoding. There are three questions, namely the interrelationships of verbs and syntactic functions, interrelationship of verbs and semantic functions, and the contribution to the ASCH and grammatical coding. Eight participants took part, divided into four with aphasia and four Non-Brain Damaged (NBD) participants as controls. The research used an experimental research method. The instruments were five images adapting Cookie Theft (an instrument used in an aphasia test in various languages) and 3 instructions to tell about daily activities. The results showed that participants with aphasia tended to use verbs in simpler structures than controls. Therefore, this study supports the ASCH about the argument simplification and tendency of grammatical coding problems, important as coming from Indonesian, an Austronesian language. Clinical implications are discussed. AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendapatkan karakteristik struktur verba dalam tuturan spontan penutur Bahasa Indonesia dengan afasia Broca dan hubungannya dengan Argument Structure Complexity Hypothesis (ASCH) dan pengkodean gramatikal. Ada tiga pertanyaan penelitian, yaitu keterkaitan verba dan fungsi sintaksis, keterkaitan verba dan fungsi semantik, dan kontribusi terhadap ASCH dan pengkodean gramatikal. Delapan peserta ikut serta, dibagi menjadi empat dengan afasia dan empat peserta tanpa gangguan syaraf (Non-Brain Damaged: NBD) sebagai kontrol. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode eksperimental. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah lima buah gambar yang mengadaptasi Cookie Theft (instrumen dalam tes afasia lintas bahasa) serta tiga buah instruksi untuk bercerita tentang kegiatan sehari-hari. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa peserta dengan afasia cenderung menggunakan verba dalam struktur yang lebih sederhana daripada peserta NBD. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini mendukung ASCH tentang penyederhanaan argumen dan kecenderungan terjadinya masalah pengkodean gramatikal. Dukungan ini penting karena datang dari Bahasa Indonesia yang merupakan bahasa rumpun Austronesia. Implikasi klinis juga disarankan.
