Abstract

In Indonesia’s schoolscapes, messages regarding food and nutrition abound. The researchers conducted descriptive, evaluative research on the nature and scope of the linguistic landscape around 20 primary school grounds in Jakarta and Depok education districts. The purpose of this study was to gather (digitally) and analyze food/nutrition signs/texts in order to determine which languages are represented in which places, and the kinds of messages for each language. As well, the study explored other non-food images relating to health found in these schoolscapes. Data were analysed using open and axial coding. The study found that the majority of the texts and images are found to be in Indonesian and only a small percentage are in Sundanese, Arabic, Japanese and English. Texts relating to food and nutrition were found inside and outside the school environments. Each language was responsible for a particular type of message. Official (top-down) messages inside the schoolscapes advocate for healthy food and nutrition. Texts found outside the schoolscapes convey a variety of messages, healthy and otherwise: from food labels, and flavor, to cigarette advertising.  There is a ‘disjunct’ between the overtly health-oriented linguistic landscape inside the school perimeter and the less healthy linguistic landscape outside the schoolscapes, an issue which may be of concern to schools and their communities.

Abstract

Prior to the ASEAN Economic Community in the end of 2015, one of the keys for Indonesian engineers to outrank engineers from other ASEAN countries is mastering English language skills. This study aims at analyzing the English needs of undergraduate engineering students at Universitas Indonesia. Questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were used as the data collection methods. The questionnaires were spread to 111 alumni and 150 students from the Faculty of Engineering. The interviews were conducted with HRD from a multinational company, HRD from a local company, three heads of departments, and two lecturers from the Faculty of Engineering. The research reveals that students’ needs of English language learning are considered not as high as their needs of English language use. The recommendation given to the Faculty of Engineering is to conduct an optional course on English for Professional Purposes, and the course is to be handled by professional English teachers helped by the lecturers from the Faculty of Engineering.

Abstract

The research was conducted to investigate how the teacher built pedagogic interactions with the students in an online EFL class in Depok, including how the teacher used speech structures, language shifts, and how the students perceived the interactions. The shift to online learning in the pandemic era had affected the quality of learning. Due to the complexity of online learning, interpersonal interactions between teachers and students were frequently overlooked in an online class. Applying exploratory sequential mixed methods, the research was meant to provide findings that could be used to improve the quality of online learning. It began with a qualitative research phase, and then the results of the qualitative phase were used to build into the quantitative phase. Classroom observations, stimulated recalls, and a questionnaire were used to collect the data. The results indicate that the EFL teacher builds his/her interactions by prioritizing pedagogical functions and targeting the students' cognitive domains. The dominant learning cycle is the focus phase with a pedagogical role as an information provider. Intramove is identified as the most frequently occurring code-switching type used for pedagogical, managerial, and technical functions. Translanguaging is also identified which gives rise to productive bilingualism. Overall, the pedagogic interactions that are established by the EFL teacher are well perceived by the students, and they give some suggestions for the quality improvement of EFL online learning so that future classes will be more interactive. More research on the aspects of class interactions during online learning should be carried out to help teachers improve the quality of their online teaching.

Abstract

Learners should be intercultural speakers in foreign language teaching that promotes the intercultural dimension. In mastering the intercultural competencies, students are expected to be able to position themselves based on the background of their origin cultures and the culture that they learn in intercultural situations.  This study aimed to find out how teaching the intercultural competencies was implemented in the course of Indonesian as a Foreign Language (BIPA), especially at the beginner level.  This study investigated the intercultural teaching through textbooks, classroom observation, cultural program, and assessment used for the beginner course at the Institution X. The results of the analysis showed that the textbooks used contain themes of intercultural learning for the survival needs of novice students. The results of the classroom observation also showed that intercultural teaching was well executed. However, the results of the field trip observations that were part of the cultural program showed that the activities were not integrated with language learning.  Besides, the results of the assessment analysis indicated that the exercise books and the tests used were not considered as the intercultural aspects. Therefore, this study is expected to provide input for intercultural teaching in BIPA courses, especially at the beginner level.

Abstract

English test results show that a lot of Indonesian students obtained low scores in listening. Students say they understand what speakers say in an English listening test but they have difficulties in answering the questions in English. This shows that students’ English receptive skills are higher than students’ productive skills. This research intends to find out what the difference in results is when students answer English listening comprehension questions in L1 (Indonesian) and English, and what the students’ perception is on the use of Indonesian language in English listening test. This research uses the mixed method along with a listening test, questionnaires, and interview as data collection tools. The findings show that these learners have difficulties to answer the test in English. The test answered in Indonesian received better scores than in English. Moreover, the questionnaires and the interview result show positive feedback on the use of Indonesian language. This shows that the learners actually have good listening skills and that their low-test scores are mostly due to their difficulty in expressing their thoughts in English.

Abstract

Implementing higher-order thinking skills into teaching-learning practice has become a priority for any teaching program anywhere today. This study aims to evaluate two books of BIPA (Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing) 7 Sahabatku Indonesia (2019) based on the Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy (RBT). The content analysis approach was used in this study to analyze research data in the form of instructions and questions classified using the RBT category. First, the analysis results showed that the instructions and questions in the two BIPA books were dominated by lower-order thinking skills (‘understanding' and 'remembering'). Second, although lower-order thinking skills dominated the instructions and questions in the two BIPA books, this study revealed that the majority of the instructions and questions classified as lower-order thinking skills in both textbooks analyzed can be changed into higher-order thinking skills. The findings of this study infer that the majority of instructions and questions in the BIPA 7 Sahabatku Indonesia need to be revised to encourage higher-order thinking skills-oriented teaching. These findings serve as a reminder for textbook writers of the importance of providing cognitive activities that can help learners develop both lower-order and higher-order thinking skills in textbooks.

Abstract

This study aims to examine individual differences, using gender as the exploratory variable and age as the covariate on academic interest among Indonesian high school students learning English. The research used a quantitative method. Data were collected virtually using an online questionnaire from 324 learners in four private urban high schools. The instrument used was the Academic Interest Scale for Adolescents (AISA). The process of data analysis consisted of confirmatory factor analysis, calculating Cronbach’s alpha, descriptive statistics, MANOVA, and MANCOVA. Four constructs were found valid and reliable: emotion, value, knowledge, and engagement. After validating the interest scale, data analysis disclosed the following results. Firstly, among the four constructs of academic interest, the value dimension was the highest and the knowledge factor the lowest, whereas emotion and engagement were in the middle position. Secondly, student gender differentiated significantly only in engagement. Thirdly, only the correlation between age and engagement was significant and positive in academic interest and student age. Lastly, considering student age, all the constructs except knowledge were differentiated by gender, where girls outperformed boys. These findings are valuable inputs for teachers, policymakers, and educational researchers in dealing with student language learning in Indonesian high schools.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe ability to compose and develop ideas in argumentative writing has become a challenge for grade XI students in a private high school in Indonesia, and mind mapping is believed in the literature to be a potential strategy to overcome the challenge. This mixed-method experimental study, therefore, was designed to examine the effectiveness of mind mapping as a prewriting strategy. The study's results, which compared the pre-test and post-test scores analyzed using the Nonparametric-Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, showed a significant value in the experimental group with Asymp Sig. (two-tailed) 0.003<0.05. The participants also expressed their perceptions of the mind-mapping features through a questionnaire and interview. Data analysis conducted using In Vivo coding in this research showed that the mind-mapping elements with the most significant influence on content exploration, text structure, convenience and interest in writing, time efficiency, and thinking skills were keywords, colors, and branches. Nevertheless, three participants said they did not make any progress for several reasons. The significant finding and the vast majority of positive opinions indicated that mind mapping was an effective strategy for developing ideas in argumentative writing. In further research, it would be interesting to explore how this strategy could be applied to a larger learning community by combining it with other strategies to improve learning outcomes.ABSTRAKTantangan pada penulisan teks argumentatif yang dihadapi pelajar kelas XI di sebuah Sekolah Menengah Atas (SMA) swasta di Indonesia terletak pada kemampuan menyusun dan mengembangkan gagasan. How to Cite: Rosita, E., Halimi, S.
