Abstract

Many people have attempted to criminalize the LGBT community. This study aims to examine how @WhatIsUpIndonesia negotiates the supported ideology with the dominant ideology in their Instagram posts about criminalizing LGBT people through two different cases; the proposed revision of Indonesia's Criminal Code (RKUHP) and Bogor’s Regional Regulation on the Prevention and Countermeasures Against Sexually Deviant Behavior. A corpus of two posts about the two cases is analyzed using social semiotic multimodal analysis in two steps: textual analysis and visual analysis. This study finds that WIUI negotiates its relatively liberal values with the dominant conservative ideology in Indonesia by choosing ambivalence through the shifting focus and overgeneralizing the issue using recontextualization and memes. In conclusion, two opposing ideologies in social media activism can be negotiated using ambivalence instead of leaning towards only one. However, the limitations of this research prevented a thorough examination of how WIUI interacts with its audience.

Abstract

The series Beef (Lee, 2023) offers a unique perspective on Asian American emotions by featuring two vengeful characters who challenge traditional notions of emotional restraint. This study investigates their anger, linking it to suppressed emotions arising from their experiences in a racially hierarchical society. Utilizing discourse and pragmatic analysis, the paper examines how these repressed emotions reflect broader societal identities. Key scenes demonstrate that the characters frequently violate conversational norms to align with social expectations, hide less desirable traits, and project a competent image. This behaviour not only masks their true feelings but also heightens their frustration. The study also highlights that those around them use similar strategies to steer conversations towards specific goals. Ultimately, the paper argues that the characters’ departure from conversational norms is a strategic attempt to assimilate into American society while managing their repressed emotions.

Abstract

Children’s literature has long been associated with key ideologies and morals for children. Through literary themes, children will learn how to perceive themselves and their surroundings. Beth Vrabel’s book Caleb and Kit (2017), which features Caleb as a kid with cystic fibrosis, explores identity and disability, two important themes in this children’s literature. These two important themes are analysed using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) with critical sociocultural approach by Moje and Lewis (2007) to examine identity in literature and disability model’s framework to analyse disability representations and the relation to the protagonist’s identity. This study portrays a child's experience with disability by examining the main character's words, actions, and interactions, revealing how both condition and environment alter identity and relationships throughout time. The study finds that the portrayal of disability is multidimensional, shifting as the narrative progresses, emphasizing the dynamic aspect of the character's experiences. Two popular disability models, medical and social, are utilized to investigate the various aspects of disability experience, as reflected in the characters and narrative. Long-standing criticisms of these two paradigms are included in the story, impacting how the characters see disability. This study suggests that both disability models operate best when used together as a full framework for critically analyzing the constructions of disability identity in children's literature and assisting the reader in understanding this issue in their surroundings.

Abstract

Monitoring mechanisms are critical to the success of online English language learning programs, particularly where self - directed learning poses challenges to maintaining quality outcomes. This conceptual article introduces a paradigm shift in online language learning by proposing a standardized assessment framework to monitor learners’ progress. Through a theoretical analysis of existing online learning models, the article integrates insights from both humanistic technology and linguistic performance metrics to develop a new monitoring system. The proposed framework ensures consistent evaluation of learners’ knowledge, skills, and behaviors, tailored to the specific demands of online environments. The implications of this approach suggest that by incorporating standardized monitoring can significantly enhance learner engagement, accountability, and proficiency in online English platforms, thereby improving the overall quality of distance learning experiences. HIGHLIGHTS: Introduction of a standardized assessment framework: The study proposes a paradigmshift by integrating a standardized online assessment system to enhance the quality assuranceof English language learning platforms. Humanistic technology in language learning: The research highlights how digital platformsdriven by humanistic technology can effectively address the challenges of distance foreignlanguage learning. Improved student performance through monitoring mechanisms: Findings demonstratethat integrating pedagogical monitoring practices leads to measurable improvements inlearners’ language skills and engagement.

Abstract

This study explores the experience of an English teacher using AI agents to teach IELTS Writing Task 2. Using a narrative inquiry approach, it delves into how AI agents enhance students' writing skills, specifically in IELTS preparation classes, and the challenges faced by the instructor in the process. Findings indicate that AI agents, such as ChatGPT, play a significant role in providing personalized feedback, supporting autonomous learning, and optimizing class time. However, AI use also presents challenges, including risks of over-reliance, academic integrity concerns, and feedback accuracy. The study highlights the importance of careful guidance and institutional policies to ensure ethical and effective AI usage in education. The research implications include a need for further investigation into AI’s specific applications for test preparation, which could enhance instructional strategies for high-stakes exam preparation like IELTS.
