Abstract

The Wage Permai Housing Complex in Sidoarjo Regency has a potential vacant land of approximately 1800 m2. Based on this potential, a community engagement program conducted by the University of Surabaya in collaboration with the Community Group (POKMAS) and the PKK cadre of Wage Permai was carried out to empower the land into a Medicinal Plant Garden (TOGA). The aim of this activity is to improve the health and economic productivity of the residents of Wage Permai. The program includes the establishment and empowerment of the TOGA garden, as well as training on herbal tea making. The methods applied in this program are participatory rural appraisal, community development, education, and participatory technology development. The results of this activity include the establishment of the Wage Permai Medicinal Plant Garden, which consists of around 23 medicinal plants. There was a significant increase in knowledge and skills of the PKK cadre of Wage Permai in herbal tea processing, as evidenced by the significant improvement in post-test results (p<0.05). The outputs of the herbal tea making training are two herbal tea product formulas and a book on herbal tea blending. These outputs are intended to support household-scale production to enhance the economic productivity of the residents.

Abstract

Introductions: The localization of Female Sex Workers (FSW), one of the largest in Southeast Asia, has considerably reduced because of the government's actions since 2014. Minimal research reported on the association factor among ex-FSW and non-FSW. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the association of demographic factors among ex-FSW and non-FSW in the ex-localization area. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study to identify the association of demographic factors among ex-FSW and non-FSW in the ex-localization area in Surabaya, Indonesia. Seventy-five participants met inclusion criteria and were gathered at predetermined locations on December 10th, 2022, to complete demographic data. Also, they had completed Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) tests for screening the clinical depression assessment. Data analysis was performed using the SPSS 24 software. Results: The study determined associated factors within the ex-FSW (p<0.05) in terms of marital status (0.03), history of psychiatric disorders (0.01), and history of smoking (0.02). The clinical depression assessment was higher in the ex-FSW group (22.5%) than in the non-FSW group (11.43%). Conclusions: Based on the work history of FSWs and non-FSWs, it had been found associated in terms of marital status, history of psychiatric disorders, and smoking history. Also, the Clinical Depression occurred more in the ex-FSW than the non-CSW group.

Abstract

Anatomy and Histology are crucial fields and serve as fundamental subjects in the clinical phase of Medical Education. Without a strong understanding of anatomy and histology, students cannot perform physical examinations, which are essential procedures for diagnosing diseases. The aim of this study is to determine whether the learning before lecture (LBL) method can improve final grades in Anatomy and Histology. This research employed a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group design. The subjects were students from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Surabaya, and comparisons were made between different academic years. The first group received traditional teaching methods with active lecturers. The second group underwent the learning before lecture intervention. The research findings indicate that the final grades in both groups had a p-value of <0.05. Learning before lecture had a significant impact on the final examination scores in anatomy and histology for the students. The results of the study demonstrate that the group exposed to learning before lecture showed a significant improvement in their final grades.

Abstract

Abstract—Indonesian localization of Female Sex Workers (FSW) was one of the largest in Southeast Asia, which has been taken by the government since 2014. The impact of mental health disorders has not yet been reported. This study aimed to compare the anxiety disorder among ex-FSW and non-FSW. This was a study to compare the prevalence of anxiety disorders among ex-FSW compared to non-FSW, located in ex-localization in Surabaya, Indonesia. Seventy-five participants met inclusion criteria and were gathered on December 10th, 2022 to complete Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) tests. The results showed that 16,67% of participants (n=12) were found with clinical anxiety scores. Among them, 41,67% ex-FSW (n=5) and 58,33% non-FSW (n=7). The prevalence of anxiety disorder, also the total BAI score, compared to the work history of FSWs and non-FSWs were found not associated (p>0.05). The anxiety disorder was found higher in the non-FSW group than ex-FSW group. But there was no difference found in the prevalence of anxiety and the BAI score between ex-FSW and non-FSW. Abstract

Breast cancer is the most common cancer found in women of all types of cancer in the world. The relationship between body mass index and the death rate from breast cancer in women has drawn attention recently. This study sought to ascertain the relevance of the variation in death rates between women with breast cancer who had a normal body mass index (BMI) and those who had a BMI of ≥25. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) references were used to guide the systematic review process in this investigation. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale for cohort design studies and the Robins-I test for single-arm experimental design studies were used to assess the quality of the articles. The data source consisted of 142 Pubmed publications published between 2016 and 2023. The analysis's findings revealed differences between the five publications that discussed the connection between obesity and breast cancer.  The development of breast cancer is linked to an increase in leptin and estrogen, which is consistent with an increase in fat. It is concluded that individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of ≥ 25 had a poorer chance of surviving breast cancer than patients with a normal BMI.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Interprofessional education (IPE) is the foundation to prepare students for the core competencies to be an effective member of a healthcare professional team. The core IPE competencies include values and ethics, roles and responsibilities, interprofessional communication, and teamwork. Challenges occur when attempting to adopt IPE in the existing curriculum. While reports of IPE involving students with the same academic years have been documented, little is known about the feasibility to conduct IPE for students with different academic years in the settings without formal IPE courses.Aims: To explore students’ experience in implementation of IPE with different health disciplines and academic years.Case Discussion: Sixth year medical students and fourth year pharmacy students were invited to an online discussion session to reflect their experiences while collaboratively working on two health promotion projects in a Community Health Center. In addition, all teachers of the project participated in the discussion. The discussion was recorded, transcribed, and further analysed. Students showed mutual respect for each profession's role, learned from each other, and collaborated in preparing materials and implementing activities. Extensive discussions with teachers are a key component of the implementation. Differences in academic year did not impede implementation. Conclusion: This case study shows that IPE involving students with different academic years is feasible without jeopardising the attainment of the core IPE competencies. Experiential learning through health promotion projects can be an effective approach for IPE in the settings where IPE is an add-on program in the existing curricular.

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease that remains a global health problem, including in Indonesia. In addition to the physical impact, pulmonary TB patients are also susceptible to psychological disorders such as depression, which may arise due to concerns about symptoms and treatment. Depression ranks first among mental health disorders in Indonesia. This study aims to determine the correlation between the phases of TB treatment and depression levels in pulmonary TB patients. This study employed an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach and used consecutive sampling. Data were collected from February 17 to June 8, 2024, using the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) questionnaire. A total of 38 pulmonary TB patients participated in this study with 6 experiencing depression of varying severity. Spearman correlation test showed no statistically significant association between the phases of TB treatment and depression levels (p= 0.093). Based on these results, it can be concluded that there is no significant correlation between the phases of TB treatment and depression levels in pulmonary TB patients at Puskesmas Putat Jaya, Surabaya.
