AbstractPISA is an international program organized by OECD aiming at evaluating the reading, mathematical, and science skills of students 15 years of age. This qualitative research attempted to describe students’ difficulty in solving PISA mathematic questions. To this end, forty-six junior high school students in Surakarta were involved with simple random sampling. The instruments in this research consisted of test instruments in the form of PISA-Like math problems and nontest instruments in the form of questionnaires. Data analysis was carried out through data reduction, data presentation, verification, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that students had difficulty solving PISA-Like questions. Several factors were found to account for students’ difficulty in solving Pisa-Like questions, including their poor understanding of the question; the long and complex stimulus of the question; and their lack of knowledge of the mathematical concept to be used. Students’ poor understanding of the question was particularly attributed to their unfamiliarity with questions, causing them to be confused about the mathematical concept to use.

Abstract

Reciting the Quran is a good habit that can improve people's cognitive abilities, including reasoning. However, according to Bloom's theory, memorization is categorized as the lowest cognitive domain, while according to NCTM, the reasoning is included in the higher-order thinking process. Hence, there is a contradiction in theories of thinking. This study aims to describe the type of reasoning of reciting the Quran students based on their recitation of the Quran ability. This research method is qualitative with a case study approach. The instrument used in this study was a reasoning test and interview guidelines. The results showed that 3 of 4 subjects with high recitation ability used creative reasoning, only one with medium recitation ability used algorithmic reasoning, and none with low recitation ability used a specific reasoning type.

Abstract

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop an assessment system using Moodle e-learning to improve mathematics learning outcomes in terms of knowledge, skills and attitudes of students. The development design in this study is more on how to develop learning activities with authentic assessment that must be carried out by the teacher which of course will be very difficult if everything is paper-based. The implementation of a reliable assessment with easy administration by the teacher becomes the consideration of the researcher. And with regard to the pandemic conditions that are being experienced by the Indonesian nation, online learning is an option for students and teachers. Even in the assessment that must be carried out. For this reason, the Moodle application is an alternative that allows students to access teaching materials and practice problem solving easily. This is very interesting to do a development study in SMK, why? Because vocational students usually lack positive attitudes towards mathematics. The use of the Moodle application in learning mathematics in the classroom is certainly the teacher's job to limit the time to face students, and the lack of positive attitudes of these students into "energy" to optimize student abilities. This research was conducted at SMK Warga Surakarta, in class XII Machines, using the Thiagarajan RnD 4D steps, namely Define, Design, Develop and Disseminate. From this research, an authentic assessment instrument has been developed using the Moodle application on the Limit Function material. By reviewing the basic competencies in the Function Limit material, 20 questions were developed in the C2 (8 points), C3 (6 points) and C4 (6 points) categories and validated with a professional judgment on the test instrument. In the student attendance data, it appears that the desire of students to improve their understanding of the Limit Function material is quite high, more than 70% of students want to repeat the class independently. Also, the average student attendance was 13.4 out of 10 meetings planned in the teacher's lesson plan (1 meeting for the implementation of daily tests). From the average value of assignments, there was an increase in the grades in assignment 1 and assignment 2, but in assignment 3, the average score of student achievement decreased, this was possible because the material in assignment 3 was a continuation of the material for assignments 1 and 2, but if viewed from the frequency of doing assignments in each task session, there was a decrease in the number of frequencies. This can be seen in assignment 2, where the average student did the assignment 2.87 on task 1, and in task 2 the average student did 2.43 times with the results significantly increasing. Meanwhile, the average daily test for students in class XII M1 was 78.7, which means that the class average was above the school's KKM and 73.3% of students obtained learning outcomes above the KKM on the Function Limit material. It can be said that learning can improve student learning outcomes and motivate students, because from the response questionnaire, 86.7% of students said they were motivated to try the test to get good results.

Abstract

Mathematics has historically been perceived as challenging for many students. However, mathematics has significant potential for developing creativity, especially in solving problems in complex scenarios. The STEAM approach (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) systematically integrates mathematics with various disciplines to foster intellectual growth, critical thinking, and creative thinking by highlighting the interrelationships between these fields. STEAM positions mathematics as a field that can build on other areas, including the arts. This idea is clearly illustrated through its integration with culture, especially the art of batik, where mathematical elements such as geometric patterns, symmetry principles, rotation, and reflection are depicted in the process. This study aims to increase students' understanding of the art of batik and the application of mathematics to arouse students' interest in mathematics. The study involved 41 elementary school students covering grades 4, 5, and 6. They initially completed a pre-test questionnaire comprising 25 questions that investigated their basic knowledge of batik and their level of interest in mathematics. Educational activities with the theme of mathematics, including geometry, batik, and the use of Microsoft Word, to explore creative digital batik pattern designs are given as initial treatment. After this treatment, participants were given a post-test. This study showed a marked increase in students' understanding of batik and their knowledge of geometric mathematics, especially in designing batik patterns.

Abstract

Differentiated learning is a learning approach that adapts to the individual needs of students, both student readiness, interests, and their learning profile. Although this concept has been widely discussed, its implementation in mathematics learning still encounters many obstacles. This study aims to describe the conception of mathematics teachers towards differentiated learning and its implementation in supporting the Independent Curriculum. This research is qualitative research using questionnaires as a data collection method. The subjects of this study were 27 junior high school mathematics teachers in the city of Surakarta. Data is analyzed using qualitative analysis techniques including data reduction, data presentation, and verification/conclusions. The results showed that teachers' understanding of differentiated learning was good, both in theoretical concepts and implementation. However, teachers still face obstacles in design, limited learning time, classroom management, and limited knowledge on some aspects of differentiated learning. The study concluded that even though teachers already understand the concept of differentiated learning, they need further support to overcome existing barriers. The implications of this research point to the need for additional training and resources to support more effective implementation.
