Abstract

Guided Democracy implemented a series of institutional reforms meant to coordinate national planning and control the civil service. I argue that the development of new institutions may allow for the formation of the New Order state. The article looks at how a highly politicized and very ineffcient state was a precursor to Indonesia’s twentieth- century developmental state. Understanding more about the Guided Democracy state is essential in understanding the New Order state, and thus Indonesian post-colonial history.

Abstract

This paper is a critical examination of the bi-polaric view of the Indonesian archipelago: Java being the center and the rest of the territory as outer islands. A discourse surrounding the centrality of Java within the conception of Indonesia is created through a variety of mediums, including through education and the arts. Anti-New Order thinkers have attacked this image as part of the way in which the state rams down an essentialist Javanese image to everyone in the archipelago. Yet to say that this was the creation of an elite-Javanese controlled state is misleading. Instead of being a primordial expression of an ur-nationality smothered under the weight of a colonial empire, this paper wants to show that this process was contingent upon a series of historical development in the eitghteenth and early nineteenth century that allowed for the creation of territorial image of a state.

Abstract

This papers explores the thoughts of Javanese nationalists during the early phase of Indonesian nationalism. It will specifcally look into the ideas of Tjipto Mangoenkoesoemo and Noto Soeroto as prototypes of new nationalist sentiments that grew during a period of intense revolutionary fervor, marked by the rise of marxism and fascism throughout the world. By looking at these factors, it wants to situate the global roots of Indonesian nationalism and contextualize Indonesian nationalist history within the global development of the early twentieth century.

Abstract

This articles tries to analyze the corruption strategy that was becoming institutionalized during the Liberal Democracy (1950-1957) and Guided Democracy (1957-1965) period and how the state dealt with these challenges through managerial strategies. Corruption here is seen as a discourse that are often used by new state elite entrant to discredit old elites, especially those with connection to the financial or economic policy makers. The position of foreigners here are central because they provide opportunities for asset transfer or the creation of new assets. By looking at the financial transition from Liberal Democracy to Guided Democracy, the forms of transfer or asset production through corruption or collusion could be discerned.

Abstract

The article explores the decolonization of education within the Indonesian petroleum industry. The Netherlands Indies had one of the largest petroleum industries in the world with many major petroleum players involved. Despite this there was a lack of investment in training and schooling of engineers and workers in the Netherlands Indies. The article showed that the development of training and tertiary education in the 1950s was conducted by both the major oil companies and Indonesian government which invested in creating vocational training schools and university departments to meet industry needs. This development allowed for the creation of a government-run national education and research institute based in Java. The article shows that the role of the oil companies was still indispensable for the decolonization gap before the development of state-owned education institutes and the inclusion of Indonesian participation in the industry during the 1950s and 1960s. The active participation of the foreign oil industry in the Indonesianization of the industry was part of its ‘exceptionalism’ and the specific role oil played in the Indonesian economy.

Abstract

Public health service activities in the Dutch East Indies increased since the early 20th century. Non-governmental organizations have emerged as a new force in providing health services to natives. Two groups that fall into this category are missions and private companies. They were most mentioned for their contribution to public health services in Java. This article aims to look further at the background and form of the relationship between the two groups. The results of this study indicate that cooperation between missions and companies occurs because both are mutually beneficial. In terms of economic benefits and in spreading the influence of each party to society, especially the natives. The relationship between the two is manifested in the form of financial donations and participation in the implementation of new ideas for more effective and efficient health services.
