Abstract

An abandoned heritage building that was built in 1901, known as Gedung Singa in the city of Surabaya, was listed for auction and the plan had raised protests from the heritage activists community. This concern was emanated by previous cases of demolition of protected heritage buildings as happened to Toko NAM, which are lamented by the heritage activists community who have become a major contributor in the effort of safeguarding heritage, including listed heritage objects. This shows the urgency of negotiating Gedung Singa’s significance to the people and of proposing an appropriate form of revitalization as to assure its sustainable preservation. This study uses exploratory literature study method and approaches the issue by using a theory known as Interaction Field Model. The result proposes a plan to turn Gedung Singa into a museum-restaurant showcasing returned heritage collections from the Netherlands as a way to strengthen the image of Surabaya as the city of heroes. Other collections that may be displayed are chosen objects in accordance to the thematic exhibitions which are arranged temporarily to accommodate interactions with the people.

Abstract

Little researches on gardens from the ninth century Hindu-Buddhist period are conducted due to the few discoveries of archaeological remains that indicate gardens. However, the Jurungan inscription dated 798 Saka (876 CE)proves the existence of a garden from the ninth century with a status of sîma for a prâsâda on Gunung Hyang. Thesignificance of this research is to understand the characteristics of a garden in Java during the ninth century and therelationship between a sîma garden and prâsâda. Additionally, the objective of this study is to obtain a comprehensiveknowledge of a garden landscape in the ninth century Hindu Mataram region and reconstruct the culture of the Javanesesociety then. This study uses a historical approach, and data collection is carried out by literature studies from books, research reports, scientific articles, and literary texts. Reading the Jurungan inscription was conducted both from the script and its transliteration. The inscription analysis was also supported by a study of the reliefs on the temples Borobudur andPrambanan, as well as landscape observations of the Boko palace garden. Research results suggest that the sîma garden mentioned in the Jurungan inscription has important elements of plants and water that support the continuity of a prâsâdaas a sacred structure on Gunung Hyang. Further, the inscription also mentioned about fulfilling the needs for fruit or flowerofferings for the prâsâda or the economic demands of the surrounding communities who maintained the prâsâda. Conclusively, the research suggests the sîma garden, prâsâda, and Gunung Hyang are conceptually sacred landscapes that are formed into a single entity as a manifestation of the cosmological concept of Hindu society in Java during the ninth century.

Abstract

This study addresses the visibility of traditional craft and focuses on developing a strategy to increase its exposure through online marketing platforms. Puspa Rinengga Batik Studio, a small and medium-sized enterprise in Sleman, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, specializes in creating batik with jangkang motifs. Despite their unique craft, the studio struggled with marketing their products, resulting in an imbalance between production and sales. This study explores a strategy to boost sales by leveraging social media for digital marketing. The approach involves empowering the community through workshops and implementing a sustainability program. As a result of this initiative, the studio successfully utilized social media to showcase its batik products to a broader audience, leading to a triple increase in sales. This study demonstrates that strategizing the visibility of traditional craft means popularizing the craft and improving the welfare of the studio’s members, particularly women, reinforcing the local cultural identity, and preserving batik as a cultural heritage.
