The urgency of revealing the actual situation of gender equality in education is the background of this study. Two textbooks used regularly in Senior High School level in Semarang namely ‗Bahasa Inggris‘ (henceforth BI) and ‗Aim High‘(henceforth AH) were used as the subjects of the study. Briefly, the objectives of the study are to describe the similarities of the representation of gender in BI and AH and to describe differences of the representation of gender in BI and AH. In gathering the data, content analysis for analyzing gender representation proposed by Brugeiilles and Cromer (2009) was used as the instrument to gain the data after being adapted in some parts. The results of the analysis revealed that (1) both BI and AH are similar in the domination of male over female in the exercise and images part; they are also similar in depicting male characters engaged with higher education, social, and outdoor-based activities. In another side, (2) Both BI and AH are different in which BI has no one female- or equal shared domination in all of the parts while AH has female dominated the frequency in the course material and equal shared domination in the reading passage and conversation part.

Communicative interaction is demanded by all levels of EFL learners. To prepare them to comply with this purpose, engaging them to deal with the real-life conversation using the target language may have beneficial effects on their second language acquisition process. However, the way learners negotiating meaning in an understandable way and how they position themselves as the appropriate role of the speakers are still rarely studied, especially in the Indonesian teaching and learning context. This study aims to reveal what type of commodity is being exchanged by graduate learners (3 females and 1 male) when they are assigned to have an unplanned casual conversation. The study further analyzes the nature of the exchange structure of EFL learners’ casual conversation seen from the Systemic Functional Linguistics perspective. The data were taken from audio recordings of casual conversations and then transcribed as the written data. The conversation was then divided into clauses as the unit of analysis. In employing a spoken discourse analysis framework, interactive analysis was implemented to discover exchange structure. The results show the exchanged commodity is information through statements. It indicates that as magister students, they always show their knowledge off, and intimacy sometimes matters as the reason for informative conversations. The speakers’ role also has been successfully achieved by the speakers since their ability to position themselves as initiators or responders to keep the conversational flow.

This study examines the impact of the video-making project assigned for pre-service teachers in English education department to enhance their competences of TPACK. Anchored in a qualitative approach, semi-structured interview with six student teachers in second semester was conducted to gain their voices on whether producing video as part of tasks in two English subjects facilitated them on learning new insight related to technology, pedagogy and content of some materials. Findings reveal video-making projects promoted self-eagerness to improve self-competence and collaboration with peers and lecturers. Consequently, making a video as tasks showed a potential for developing pre-service teachers’ TPACK. Participants’ voices indicated there were some challenges in video producing process. The study also suggests that there is ample room for improvement especially in preparing student teachers with prior knowledge of using technology.

The current study aims to disclose how arguments of writer and sources of other voices are generated in the pedagogical-proposed texts in the textbook under appraisal analysis. While a plethora of studies on evaluation of interpersonal linguistic features or Engagement resources used in students’ writings in tertiary context, little studies focus on senior secondary level. To fill this niche, this study investigates Engagement resources of expository text in Indonesian mandatory EFL textbook which is used as model or sample for writing section. Students in this level may not be expected to produce good arguments since they are actually in progress to learn how to articulate their ideas through certain genres. Considering this condition in mind, the sample or model text used in the classroom is crucial. Following appraisal framework (Martin White, 2005), two exposition texts are generated as source data in attempt to investigate linguistic features and strategy of the textual voice in expressing authorial or external voices. The findings suggest the needs of evaluation of text provided in textbook from the lens of appraisal analysis as an alternative and it is also recommended for teachers as facilitator in writing exposition text to overtly take Engagement resources into account in teaching process in order to facilitate students’ writing with intertextuality.

Myriads of studies about gender stereotypes in educational materials have been carried out by global scholars in recent years. One of the focus is in the textbook seems to be crucial due to its prominent role as guidance to curriculum and teachers’ credence on the contents. A textbook actually has two important role as vehicle of knowledge transfer and of social practices paradigm construction. However, little studies have reported on the representation of female characters stereotypes in the context of elementary school language textbook. Following multimodality framework proposed by Van Leuween (2008), verbal and visual texts in two English language textbooks published by private companies in Indonesia were analysed in respect to gender stereotyped. The findings reveal the existence of stereotypes of female character on personality, hobby and interest, occupation, and social roles. The study suggests textbook makers (authors and publishers) and users (parents, teachers, and education stakeholders) to rise critical gender awareness.
