Abstract

The objective of the research is to increase the students’ ability in writing recount text through Language Experience Approach (LEA) at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 5 Dharma Caraka Telukdalam. The research design is classroom action research (Kemmis et al 2014). This action research is conducted into two cycles, and each cycle consists of two meetings. The instruments of data collection are observation papers and written test. The qualitative data are analyzed by using Miles, Huberman, & Saldana’s theory (2014), and quantitative data are analyzed by using Gay et al (2000). The finding is Language Experience Approach increases the students’ ability in writing recount text at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 5 Dharma Caraka Telukdalam. The increasing is supported by the students’ average score that in cycle I is 56.75, and in cycle II is 85.45. It is suggested to English teachers to use LEA as the approach of teaching and learning of writing.

Abstract

This research aimed at identifying the common errors in constructing English noun clauses made by the third semester students of English Language Education Study Program of STKIP Nias Selatan. This research employed a descriptive qualitative research design. Documentation was used as the techniques to collect the data of the research. The number of the participants were 59 students. The result of data analysis shows that the students commonly made the errors on omission, addition, misformation, and misordering in constructing noun clause begun with subordinator –that, question word, and whether/if. The findings of this research are expected to be advantageous reference to improve errors made in constructing noun clause as dependent clause and to study grammar more.

Abstract

The objective of the research was to know the factors that affecting the grammatical errors made by the students in writing narrative paragraph. This research was designed in qualitative research. This research was conducted at English Language Study Program of STKIP Nias Selatan. The data was collected by interviewing 15 students of fourth semester students. The students’ papers of writing narrative paragraph were the main source to determine the respondents of interview. Based on the data analysis, there were two factors that affecting the grammatical errors in writing narrative paragraph: first language interference and developmental errors. The research findings are expected becoming good information for the students and English lecturer to solve the students’ problems in writing narrative paragraph.

Abstract

This research aimed at analyzing the grammatical equivalence between English version as source text and Indonesian version as translated text of Totto-chan Novel: The Little Girl at the Window. This research was designed in qualitative research design. The result of this research showed that there were five grammatical categories found. They were number, gender, person, tense and aspect, and voice. Singular or plural forms was translated into either singular or plural form, feminine or masculine form was translated into feminine, masculine or general, and pronouns were translated into pronouns.Tense and aspect, past, present and future were translated by using temporal determiners and adverb of time, meanwhile for voice category, active or passive voice was translated into either active or passive.It was concluded that grammatical equivalence used to get the closest meaning.

Abstract

Definition paragraph is a paragraph which defines or explains something. In writing a definition paragraph, a writer should pay much attention to the organization and the language features of the paragraph. The third semester students of English Department of FKIP UNIRAYA, however, faced problems in writing the definition paragraph. This case motivated the writers to do a research to describe what the problems faced by the students are. This research was a kind of qualitative research. The result of the analysis showed that the students’ problems were in elaborating the controlling idea which is stated in topic sentences, and in drawing a concluding sentence. Moreover, the students have problems in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and mechanic in writing. Based on the result, it is concluded that the students are not able to write a good definition paragraph because of the problems faced. Hence, it is suggested that those students’ problems need to be considered in teaching the paragraph.

Abstract

Subject and verb agreement is the grammatical rule that the subject and the verb used in a sentence match each other. The third semester students of English Language Education Study Program of Nias Raya University faced the problem in subject-verb agreement aspect. The objective of this research was investigating subject-verb agreement made by the third semester students of English Language Education of Nias Raya University with the number of students was 37 persons. The primary source of the data was the students’ papers in writing sentences. The errors made were determined by the rule of subject-verb agreement (Greenbaum & Nelson, 2002). The result of data analysis was the third semester students made the errors on subject–verb agreement used or linked by: -number and person, -and, -or, -neither…nor, -preposition: with, as well as, -collective nouns, -indefinite pronouns, -quantity phrases, -singular nouns ending in –s, -relative pronoun: who, that, -pronoun: what, -introductory there, -citation and titles. The result of this research is expected being significant for English lecturer to search for solution for this problem
