The objective of the research is to increase the studentsâ ability in writing recount text through Language Experience Approach (LEA) at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 5 Dharma Caraka Telukdalam. The research design is classroom action research (Kemmis et al 2014). This action research is conducted into two cycles, and each cycle consists of two meetings. The instruments of data collection are observation papers and written test. The qualitative data are analyzed by using Miles, Huberman, & Saldanaâs theory (2014), and quantitative data are analyzed by using Gay et al (2000). The finding is Language Experience Approach increases the studentsâ ability in writing recount text at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 5 Dharma Caraka Telukdalam. The increasing is supported by the studentsâ average score that in cycle I is 56.75, and in cycle II is 85.45. It is suggested to English teachers to use LEA as the approach of teaching and learning of writing.

This research aimed at identifying the common errors in constructing English noun clauses made by the third semester students of English Language Education Study Program of STKIP Nias Selatan. This research employed a descriptive qualitative research design. Documentation was used as the techniques to collect the data of the research. The number of the participants were 59 students. The result of data analysis shows that the students commonly made the errors on omission, addition, misformation, and misordering in constructing noun clause begun with subordinator –that, question word, and whether/if. The findings of this research are expected to be advantageous reference to improve errors made in constructing noun clause as dependent clause and to study grammar more.

The objective of the research was to know the factors that affecting the grammatical errors made by the students in writing narrative paragraph. This research was designed in qualitative research. This research was conducted at English Language Study Program of STKIP Nias Selatan. The data was collected by interviewing 15 students of fourth semester students. The students’ papers of writing narrative paragraph were the main source to determine the respondents of interview. Based on the data analysis, there were two factors that affecting the grammatical errors in writing narrative paragraph: first language interference and developmental errors. The research findings are expected becoming good information for the students and English lecturer to solve the students’ problems in writing narrative paragraph.

This research aimed at analyzing the grammatical equivalence between English version as source text and Indonesian version as translated text of Totto-chan Novel: The Little Girl at the Window. This research was designed in qualitative research design. The result of this research showed that there were five grammatical categories found. They were number, gender, person, tense and aspect, and voice. Singular or plural forms was translated into either singular or plural form, feminine or masculine form was translated into feminine, masculine or general, and pronouns were translated into pronouns.Tense and aspect, past, present and future were translated by using temporal determiners and adverb of time, meanwhile for voice category, active or passive voice was translated into either active or passive.It was concluded that grammatical equivalence used to get the closest meaning.

Definition paragraph is a paragraph which defines or explains something. In writing a definition paragraph, a writer should pay much attention to the organization and the language features of the paragraph. The third semester students of English Department of FKIP UNIRAYA, however, faced problems in writing the definition paragraph. This case motivated the writers to do a research to describe what the problems faced by the students are. This research was a kind of qualitative research. The result of the analysis showed that the students’ problems were in elaborating the controlling idea which is stated in topic sentences, and in drawing a concluding sentence. Moreover, the students have problems in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and mechanic in writing. Based on the result, it is concluded that the students are not able to write a good definition paragraph because of the problems faced. Hence, it is suggested that those students’ problems need to be considered in teaching the paragraph.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui jenis-jenis metode penerjemahan dan untuk mengetahui jenis-jenis metode terjemahan yang paling dominan digunakan oleh Harum Wibowo dalam menerjemahkan cerita pendek “Pemberian orang majus”. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan penelitian kualitatif untuk menganalisis metode terjemahan yang digunakan Harum Wibowo dalam menerjemahkan cerit pendek “Pemberian orang majus”. Data dianalisis dengan membaca cerpen versi bahasa inggris dan bahasa Indonesia, mengklasifikasikan setiap kalimat menurut masing-masing metode terjemahan dan menjelaskan mengapa ucapan-ucapan tersebut dimasukkan ke dalam setiap metode terjemahan. Ada 125 ujaran dalam cerpen “Pemberian orang majus”. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada 6 (enam) macam dari 8 metode terjemahan yang ditemukan dalam menerjemahkan cerpen, kata per kata (2 ujaran), terjemahan harfiah (34 ujaran), teremahan setia (33 ujaran), terjemahan bebas (53 ujaran), terjemahan idiomatic (1 ujaran), dan terjemahan komunukatif (2 ujaran). Terjemahan bebas lebih sering digunakan karena penerjemah mencoba untuk membuat pembaca mengerti sejauh mungkin. Hasilnya diharapkan akan memberikan wawasan baru bagi guru dan siswa tentag metode terjemahan dan lebih hati-hati dalam menggunakan metode terjemahan untuk membuat terjemhan yang lebih baik.

This research aimed to analyze the connotative meaning and the type of connotative meaning found in the twelve lyrics of linkin parks’s songs. This research is designed in qualitative research with descriptive approach. The source of this research is the twelve lyrics of linkin park’s songs. The data is analyzed by using the technique of the data analysis: data condensation, data display, drawing and verifying conclusions. The result of data analysis shows that: there are 30 connotative meaning used in the twelve lyrics and the dominant types of connotative meaning is associative meaning. Besides, it is found 16 associative meaning, 4 allusive meaning, 3 collocative meaning, 7 affective meaning, 0 reflective meaning and attitudional meaning. Based on the finding, it is concluded that the connotative meaning found is carried within words, phrase and sentences in twelve lyrics of linkin parks’s song. In this research, the researcher also wants to suggest the lecturer or the English teacher to lead the students’ use the connotative meaning theory as the material of teaching and learning and also can be implemented as material for increasing the students’ ability in mastering the vocabullary and also connotative meaning material can be propossed to extend students ability in recognizing the meaning of words not only which has provided in dictionary but also which has associated in another aspect.

Narrative paragraph is a kind of paragraphs that tells events in the order they happened. It can be imaginary or based on the real incident. In writing the paragraph, however, the students made errors in sentences structure. The purpose of this study was to find out the errors made by third semester students of English Department at Nias Raya University. This is was a kind of qualitative research which explained the errors found. The result of this study showed that the sentence errors were on subject-verb agreement, and fragments. Moreover, the students were error in the use of punctuations comma (,) and semicolon (;) in compound sentence. Therefore, it is concluded that leaving out the subject/verb/ both and wrong orders of the grammatical elements of a sentence, and misusing the punctuations cause the error in writing narrative paragraph.

This research was carried out to investigate the students’ anxiety in learning English at the tenth grade TKJ of SMK Negeri 2 Siduaori. The objectives of this research were to find out the types of students’ anxiety in learning English at the tenth grade TKJ of SMK Negeri 2 Siduaori and to explain the factors contributing to the students’ anxiety in leraning English to tenth grade TKJ of SMK Negeri 2 Siduaori. This research was a qualitative research design and the data were obtained through the classroom observation and interviews. The data were analyzed by using Miles and Huberman’ theory such as data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing and verification. The result of this study showed that the students at the tenth grade TKJ of SMK Negeri 2 Siduaori were experienced the anxiety in learning English. There were two types of anxiety experienced by the students such as state anxiety and trait anxiety. The factors that contribute to the students’ anxiety in learning English such as speaking in front of the class, being called by the teacher, incomprehensible input or unclear explanation, being ridiculed by peers/classmates, inappropriate teaching method, low self-esteem, lack of preparation, students’ beliefs about learning English, English is excessive, and stressful learning experience. The researcher figured out that the sources of these factors do not only come from the teacher but also from the students. Thus, it is extremely important to increase teacher’s awareness since anxiety is the main factor which affects the students’ learning. Knowing the students’ anxiety in learning will absolutely influence the teacher in treating the students properly. The students should respect each others and support each others in growing together and developing skills in the class.
