Abstract

This research aimed at investigating common grammatical errors made by students in writing narrative paragraph. This research was conducted at the English Language Education Study Program of STKIP Nias Selatan. The subject of this research was consisted of 23 students of English Language Education Study Program. The data of this research were collected from students’ paper in writing narrative paragraph. Based on the data analysis, it was found that the students commonly made morphological grammatical errors and syntactic grammatical errors. The morphological grammatical errors consisted of omission of -ed, substitution of simple not-past, misuse of ‘s, and adding unnecessary ‘s. In addition, Syntactic grammatical errors consisted of misuse of pronoun, adding unnecessary be, omission of preposition, misuse of determiner, and adding unnecessary to. Substitution of simple not-past dominated the error made by the students. These research findings are expected to be advantageous for English lecturer to find out the effective strategy to solve the students’ problem

Abstract

This research aimed at testing the effect of Concept-Oriented Reading Instruction (CORI) on students’ reading comprehension. This research was a quasi-experimental research. It was conducted at Semester IV of English Language Education Study Program of STKIP Nias Selatan. The samples were chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The samples of this research were 2A as experimental class (23 students) and 2B as control class (23 students). Reading comprehension test was used to collect the data of the research. The data were analyzed by using Chi-square test for normality testing, variance test for homogeneity testing, and t-test for hypotheses testing. The result of data analysis showed that Concept-Oriented Reading Instruction (CORI) produced better reading comprehension of students than Contextual Teaching and Learning. Based on the finding, it is concluded that Concept-Oriented Reading Instruction is an effective instructional strategy for students’ reading comprehension compared to Contextual Teaching and Learning.

Abstract

Passive is considered as one of the important aspects in English grammar that should be mastered by the leaner. In fact, however, most of the students make some mistakes that can be considered as the errors since it happens regularly. Hence, this research tried to find out the students’ error in constructing the passive sentence. The qualitative-explanative design was used to describe the students’ error. The data gathered through documentary technique was analyzed by using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model that is data reduction, data display and then verifying or drawing conclusion. The result of data analysis showed that there were two types of students’ errors in constructing the passive, namely past participle error and auxiliary error.

Abstract

This research aimed at analyzing the grammatical equivalence between English version as source text and Indonesian version as translated text of Totto-chan Novel: The Little Girl at the Window. This research was designed in qualitative research design. The result of this research showed that there were five grammatical categories found. They were number, gender, person, tense and aspect, and voice. Singular or plural forms was translated into either singular or plural form, feminine or masculine form was translated into feminine, masculine or general, and pronouns were translated into pronouns.Tense and aspect, past, present and future were translated by using temporal determiners and adverb of time, meanwhile for voice category, active or passive voice was translated into either active or passive.It was concluded that grammatical equivalence used to get the closest meaning.

Abstract

Definition paragraph is a paragraph which defines or explains something. In writing a definition paragraph, a writer should pay much attention to the organization and the language features of the paragraph. The third semester students of English Department of FKIP UNIRAYA, however, faced problems in writing the definition paragraph. This case motivated the writers to do a research to describe what the problems faced by the students are. This research was a kind of qualitative research. The result of the analysis showed that the students’ problems were in elaborating the controlling idea which is stated in topic sentences, and in drawing a concluding sentence. Moreover, the students have problems in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and mechanic in writing. Based on the result, it is concluded that the students are not able to write a good definition paragraph because of the problems faced. Hence, it is suggested that those students’ problems need to be considered in teaching the paragraph.

Abstract

The purpose of this service is to socialize the introduction of the school field. This is an activity contained in the guidebook used by all students in semester IV. This socialization aims to provide an overview of the steps in carrying out the Field introduction activity for Persekolaha I which is the first stage in the introduction of the School of Education Field for the Undergraduate Education Program at STKIP Nias Selatan, especially in the process of preparing professional teachers for the undergraduate education program, in the form of assigning students to implement learning outcomes through observing the learning process at school. The scope of implementation of the Introduction to Persekolaha Field, observation activities, analysis and direct appreciation of activities related to school culture, school management, and school dynamics as an educational and learning institution.

Abstract

Coronavirus disease (Covid-19) Pandemic has spread in many countries included Indonesia. As consequence that it was not only activities in the economic sector are limited, world of education was also restricted because of the Covid-19, so the teaching and learning activities cannot be carried out as usual. This was challenge for all of the teachers. There was changed in the teaching and learning situation, teaching and learning system, and the way of convey the material. Therefore, the objectives of this research were to describe teaching strategies used by English teacher during pandemic situation at Eighth Grade of SMP Negeri 1 Lahusa. This research was designed by applying qualitative descriptive. The instruments of data collection were observation and interview. After analyzing the data, researcher found the result. The teaching strategies used by English teacher during pandemic situation, namely: (1) teachers adjusted learning objectives to basic competencies and the students level, (2) teachers selected teaching and learning approach by having good communication and gave motivation for the students, (3) teachers adjusted teaching and learning method to the duration of time and the availability of text books, (4) teachers adjusted norm and minimal success or criteria by finding how many students are interested in the lesson and how many students are capable of learning.

Abstract

This research aimed at analysing the difficulties incomprehending narrative text at the eleventh grade of SMA Swasta Fajarmas Bawonauru. This research designed by using qualitative descriptive method. In analyzing the data, the researcher used theory of Miles and Huberman; data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The data source of this study was taken from the Eleventh Grade of SMA Swasta Fajarmas Bawonauru. To get the data, researcher use Documentation and Interview technique. The data of this study are difficulties and factors. To examine the credibility of this study the researcher used triangulation. The results of this study found that there were 5difficulties that is (1) Difficulties understanding the meaning of text that given by teacher in the classroom, (2) Difficulties in understanding new words, (3) Difficulties in understanding the purpose of the text, (4) Difficulties in understand language feature of narrative text, (5) Difficulties in understanding grammar in narrative textand factors were 2 that is (1) Limited vocabulary, (2) Teacher explanationthat occurred at Eleventh Grade of SMA Swasta Fajarmas Bawonauru.

Abstract

This research was motivated by the researcher found many students still lack of vocabulary and difficult to memorize vocabulary. This research aimed to improving the students’ vocabulary mastery through Mnemonic Method at the Seventh Grade of SMP Negeri 1 Huruna.The research was designed in classroom action research (CAR). Observation paper of the researchers’ activities and students’ activities, and test were used as the instrument to collect the data needed. The research did action research in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of two meetings. The result of this action research was that the percentage of researchers done activities in meeting I of cycle I was 73 %, meanwhile in meeting II of cycle I was 83 %. Next, the percentage of students’ done activities in meeting I of cycle I was 69.9 %, meanwhile in meeting II of cycle I was 87.2 %. The average of students’ score in cycle I was 67.3. Furthemore, the percentage of researchers done activites in meeting I of cycle II was 93 %, meanwhile in meeting II in cycle II was 100 %. Next, the percentage of the students’ done activities in meeting I of cycle II 93.6 %, meanwhile in meeting II of cycle II was 94.8 %. The average students’ score in cycle II was 88.1. It was concluded that there was improvement of students’ vocabulary through Mnemonic method. Therefore, the researcher gives suggestion to English teachers to use Mnemonic method in teaching and learning process, because through Mnemonic method the classroom atmosphere becoming live and no boredom in learning English.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the types of grammatical deviation in Rich Brian’s song lyrics. This research is designed in qualitative research with descriptive approach. The data of this research is the three lyrics of Rich Brian’s songs, are: Dat stick, Who that be, and Glow like that. The prosecures used during analyzing the data were data condensation, data displayed, verifying and drawing conclusion (Miles, Huberman & Saldana 2014 31-32). Based on the data analysis, it was found that there were six types of grammatical deviation, there are omission, double negation, overgeneralization, deviation of preposition, deviation of verb and deviation of pronoun and the deviation was mostly occured in the lyrics of the songs is omission. The researcher suggests English teachers, student, and readers to use this research as the reference to increase their knowledge about grammatical deviation. Also the readers to use this research as a guidance in conducting the relevant research to sharpen and enlarge their literal development by trying to understand deviation in song lyrics.
