Abstract

The fact that students have lack of reading comprehension as the result of ineffective implementation in course syllabus. The study aims at implementing authentic assessment in extensive reading. The objective of activities in authentic assessment is to enhance the students’ pragmatic acquisition in understanding political news text. Qualitative method design is used by conducting classroom action research. The finding indicates that the pedagogy implementation provides various tasks in improving the students’ pragmatic acquisition. The result reveals that reading strategy can be reinforced through listening, writing, and speaking to have an understanding in a context. Forty-five students in extensive reading class answer open-ended questionnaire and the result shows that pragmatic acquisition is an effective strategy to comprehend the reading text. The integration of authentic assessment and the acquisition of semantic meaning are suggested to be investigated in future research.

Abstract

This study was conducted to find out the teacher correction techniques on students writing composition. There are some techniques that can promote to correct the students composition, and the elements corrected show the errors of students’ sentence pattern commonly appear. Moreover, this study also answers the student perceptions toward the teacher correction. The students’ perceptions are the guideline for the teacher in choosing the most suitable techniques which match with their need for composition revision and the elements corrected also show how the ability of students in mastering sentences pattern, vocabulary, and another skills of languages.

Abstract

The implementation of contextual teaching and learning in speaking to the first semester student of Business Administration in Hang Tuah University aims to investigate the strategies of Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) and the advantages of using(REACT) as one of the CTL technique. English for business is given to the students who learn English for Specific Purposes. The target of mastering this second language acquisition is able to perform well in spoken English according to their profession. In addition, The findings revealed that the teaching speaking was successful to improve students’ pronunciation and fluency.The benefits of applying REACT: (1) engaging students in the speaking activity; (2) increasing students’ motivation to participate actively in the speaking class; (3) helping students to solve their problems; (4) providing ways for students to discuss or interact with their friends. Based on these findings, it is recommended that CTL be implemented in teaching speaking.

Abstract

Mewujudkan masyarakat pesisir dengan pengetahuan yang berkualitas merupakan tujuan dari pengabdian kepada masyarakat. Beberapa pekerja di Kebun Pak Inggih menerima pendampingan untuk berlatih mengenai komunikasi bahasa dan perhotelan. Berdasarkan hasil observasi dan wawancara yang dilakukan, pelatihan komunikasi bahasa memperbaiki cara pekerja berkomunikasi dengan pengunjung, mengubah cara berbicara menjadi teknik yang efektif dan tepat untuk menyambut dan membimbing pengunjung. Pelatihan perhotelan bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kualitas pelayanan yang telah diterapkan yang selama ini dilakukan tanpa memperhatikan prosedur perhotelan. Hal ini dikembangkan untuk mewujudkan pekerja yang handal dalam melayani pengunjung di Kebun Pak Inggih. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa peran bahasa dapat meningkatkan kualitas pelayanan dalam hal penyambutan tamu, cara berkomunikasi dalam pelayanan penyajian makanan dan minuman, serta pelatihan pengetahuan perhotelan untuk membekali masyarakat agar lebih terampil dan berpengetahuan.

Abstract

Reading habit is important to be introduced to young learners. Through academic literacy, students not only comprehend social and science texts but also enhance their character. To realize the literacy program in these lessons, a team-game tournament is used that consists of a presentation, group discussion, reading tournament, and the award. The study uses a qualitative research method that applies a semi-structured observation guide and interviews sixth-grade students in one primary school in Indonesia. The observation indicates teaching techniques for improving reading comprehension, and the interview shows the impacts of academic literacy in the team-game tournament (TGT) on students’ knowledge. The findings show that academic literacy improves understanding of social and science texts, and moral values. This is an integrated skill because students get academic knowledge and character building. Students know how to comprehend passages related to social and science, as well as how to communicate the information through presentation skills. Academic literacy is proven to be an effective strategy to improve understanding and fluency in written and spoken forms. The study recommends that team-game tournament provides practices not only in reading but also in writing and speaking skills. Team-game tournament is an interesting learning method to have fun activity in the modern era of English teaching for young learners. HIGHLIGHTS: Academic literacy in team-game tournament (TGT) strategy is suggested to boost young learners’ reading comprehension and character building. Academic literacy improves the students’ understanding of social and science texts, and moral values. Academic literacy promotes fun learning in writing, reading, and speaking skills.

Abstract

Excellent public service requires government employees to possess professional skills, one of which is proficiency in English communication. This study explores how tourism and hospitality training can enhance employees’ ability to interact with foreign visitors at tourism destinations. The study utilizes observation, role-playing, and focus group discussion as primary methods, involving 40 government employees in a program designed to develop effective communication skills for interacting with tourists. The findings highlight comm unication challenges faced by the community as it aims to establish itself as an international tourism destination. The findings indicate that role-playing is particularly effective in simulating real- world interactions, helping participants understand how to communicate in practical situations. Furthermore, focus group discussions provide insight into the participants’ views on the training program. The study concludes that English for administration enhances the employees’ communication with visitors, equipping them with effective and appropriate techniques for welcoming and guiding tourists. This contributes to improved service quality and better understanding of hospitality practices, enabling the community to become more skilled and professional. The study also suggests that improving speaking skills requires multiple approaches, including teaching methods tailored to the participant’s needs and the use ofauthentic materials. Future research should investigate the government employees’ competencies in reading, listening, and writing skills. Furthermore, the study underscores the correlation between public service excellence and the quality of the workforce. HIGHLIGHTS: English for public service is suitable knowledge to improve governmentemployees’ communication skill. Role playing is an effective learning method to practice conversation withforeigners. Speaking in English should be enhanced to promote tourism objects at Setigi forInternational recognition.
