Abstract

This research aims at analyzing the challenges and the potential futures of the implementation of ubiquitous learning in teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) in Indonesian context. This study employed descriptive qualitative research design with observation and interview as the data collection techniques. The samples of this research participants were 50 bachelor degree students majoring in English Education who were chosen through random sampling technique. After the data were attained, they were analyzed to answer the research questions of what challenges and futures of ubiquitous learning in Indonesian TEFL context were. The research findings presented that three major challenges in the implementation of ubiquitous learning in TEFL were technical problems (internet connection-related problems) which took 50% of the concerns, devices operating competence which had 30% of the attentions, and students’ attitude which had 20% of the problems. About the futures of ubiquitous learning in TEFL context, the participants testified that ubiquitous learning could be an excellent alternative to study from anywhere and at any time (40%), 30% suggested technical readiness to optimize the learning outcome, the other 20% thought that Indonesian students were not ready for the implementation of ubiquitous learning, and another 10% stayed neutral to the option. These findings contribute to fill the gap of the controversies of ubiquitous learning implementation. It is suggested that future researchers took deeper examination related to this topic.

Abstract

English at the senior secondary school (SMA) level plays a crucial role in helping students develop communication skills and fostering an understanding of the importance of English for enhancing the nation’s competitiveness in the global arena. However, in practice, many students still experience difficulties with vocabulary, as revealed through interviews with the tenth-grade English teacher. Poster images serve as an effective and efficient instructional medium for delivering messages or information to students. By providing visual representations of objects along with their meanings, poster images can support students in expanding their vocabulary. This study aims to describe how the use of poster images improves vocabulary mastery among tenth-grade students at SMA Islam Baitur-Rohmah Malang in 2024. The findings from classroom observations and learning activities indicate an improvement in student performance. The average score in Cycle I was 65.5, increasing to 75.5 in Cycle II. In Cycle I, 15 students (58%) achieved mastery, while 10 students (42%) had not yet met the criteria. In Cycle II, all 25 students (100%) achieved mastery. These results show that all tenth-grade students successfully reached the expected minimum mastery level (>70%) in Cycle II, with the mastery rate increasing to 100%.

Abstract

Speaking ability in English is a core skill that reflects a learner’s overall language proficiency. However, many students still encounter various obstacles when attempting to speak. This study examines the speaking difficulties faced by eighth-grade students at SMP N 2 Waikabubak. The purpose of this research is to identify the types of difficulties students experience and the factors contributing to those challenges. The participants in this study were eighth-grade students and English teachers at SMP N 2 Waikabubak. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, with data collected through observation checklists and interviews. Interview responses were gathered from students, and the data were analysed through stages of observation checklist review, transcription, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that students’ speaking difficulties stem from two main sources: linguistic and psychological factors. Linguistic barriers include limited vocabulary, poor pronunciation, and inadequate grammar. Psychological factors involve low self-confidence, shyness, anxiety, and fear of making mistakes.
