Individual adaptability towards communication media in Higher Education institutions as organizational entities could be reviewed from social semiotic perspective. Following Kress, social semiotic is a theory focuses on how semiotic resources in a varied social situation and locations become meaningful signs regulating human interaction. The theory was adapted in this research to translate patterns and activities of communication occurred in internationalization initiatives recorded in Whatsapp Group PSIK FISIP Universitas Brawijaya, as an artefact of communication. Non-participant observation was conducted towards series of 7 months conversations on Whatsapp Group as sequences of communicative act, and then analysed using Van Leeuwen’s four Dimension of Semiotic Analysis. Abstract

Media provides the society with limited perspective of realites, making the world phenomenon never be exact same with the media depiction. In most of the situated war, depicted on media, the war has become more about descriptions rather than a causal explanation, as a result, the war phenomenon is simplified. The simplification highlights the humanization of individuals depicted from the filmmaker’s culture, and distanced individuals from other cultures. The one sided portrayal tend to mix military world with emotional side of soldiers’ life called militainment coined by Stahl (2010). One of the American film titled Restrepo (2009) accentuates the life of American soldiers’ in one of the most dangerous outposts during the war against the Taliban in Afghanistan. The war documentary film has become a product of information and entertainment-blurred genre as a result of embedding journalism. This essay will use textual analysis methodologies of McKee’s (2003:92), in particular, to highlight (1) representation of US domestic patriotism in relation to Bush administration’s invasion ideology of Afghanistan war in 2001-present; and (2) the racist depictions of Afghani locals in Restrepo documentary. It is concluded that positive portrayal of soldiers’ life in the war zone and asymmetric relationship of American soldiers and the Afghans intensified the US status quo as superpower country towards the Afghans as the Orient.

Abstract

The COVID19 has fabricated a new way of life with the worldwide social restrictions policy. During the pandemic, Indonesian university students are mostly socially linked through the Internet, altering their prior face-to-face interactions. While being online, students rely on the technology to create their idealized self as a professional. Alterations in the study methods had created drawbacks when students were continuously building their professional identity, thus their hustle. This research aimed to describe students’ experiences and efforts while treating the Internet as an invisible technology during COVID19. Data collected via online survey with open ended questionnaires by convenience sampling. Research subjects were 10 international class students of Communication Science at Universitas Brawijaya. Data was being analyzed employing thematic analysis. This study found that students’ pressurized effort to hustle and rely more on the self while working to achieve the best mark during the pandemic occurs for two distinct reasons: gradually decreasing trust towards their group members’ teamwork motivation and spiraling compulsion to earn other skills as part of their portfolio before graduating. This research confirms that while students are in the process of adapting to the online learning scheme, their trust level towards online information are heightened yet their trust level towards their peers are weakened. Further studies on the implications of rising hustle culture amongst students to the academic life is suggested.

Abstract

Realizing good governance in communication activities through the media in Indonesia is not easy. Social media besides providing convenience also bring negative impacts for its users. Disinformation or hoax messages are disseminated via Whatsapp cause panic and anxiety. The older adult or the so-called silver surfer group is claimed to be a vulnerable group that consumes and/or disseminates hoax messages because their consumption patterns of media products are often carried out in the form of reinforcing their personal opinions, not cross-check information received. This study uses qualitative research methods with the aim to provide an overview of phenomenon about the spread of hoax messages by the older adult in their Whatsapp group and the social consequences. The lack of understanding media literacy impacts the difficulty of differentiating factual information and hoaxes. This research provides education to the public about the importance of media literacy, especially in the dissemination of disinformation, as well as giving an overview about the importance of media literacy, especially in the scope of the smallest organization, families. This also can be an academic consideration for the risk mitigation activities of the spread of hoax messages that were practiced by the Ministry of Information and Communication (Kominfo RI).
