Abstract

Batik Industry has been developed in Banyumas regency, Central JavaIndonesia. This industry produced liquid waste as the side of production process. The liquid waste decreased the water quality surrounds it. One of the pollutantwhich brought trough the liquid waste was heavy metal chromium (Cr) whichknown toxic to the organism in the water. Therefore, there should be preventionaction to minimize the bad impact of liquid waste. One of method which could beuse to prevent the water quality was by phytoremediation. There were three kindsof aquatic plant in this research; Eceng gondok (Eichornia crassipes), kayu apu(Pistia stratiotes) and ganggang (Hydrilla verticillata). The aim of using aquaticplant was to observe the ability of aquatic plant to decrease chromium level in thewater and decide which was the most effective. It was use completely randomizeddesign with 4 treatments and 6 repetitions, which will analyze by ANAVA andcontinued with LSD. The result showed that aquatic plant could be used asremediator agent to heavy metal Cr. Eceng gondok had 49.56%, kayu apu had33.61% and ganggang had 10.84% on decreasing Cr level in liquid waste of batikindustry. It can conclude that Eceng gondok was the most effectivephytoremediator agent on decreasing Cr level in liquid waste of batik industry.

Abstract

Indragiri Hilir mangrove forest is a type of one which is influenced by sea water tide, freshwater, soil texture, and salinity. The diversity of flora and fauna in the mangrove forest is relatively higher than that of many others in Indonesia. The potential vegetation is dominated by Bruguiera spp., Rhizophora spp., Avicennia spp., and Soneratia spp. This study was aimed to (1) determine biomass potential in Indragiri Hilir mangrove forest and (2) develop estimation model on the mangrove biomass with diameter of stem. The results showed that biomass potential of Rhizophora apiculata was 536.4 to 2,333.0 kg/tree, R. mucronata was 376.0 to 900.5 kg/tree, and Bruguiera spp. was 328.0 to 546.0 kg/tres. Estimation model on biomass of Bruguiera were 0.9450903501 D1.865827743 for stem biomass and 10.11259103 D 1.30096243 for total biomass, while those of R. apiculata were 0.2109981916 D 2.453342882 for stem biomass and  0.7574460068 D 2.232516567 for total biomass.

Abstract

Plawangan Timur, located in the Segara Anakan Lagoon, Cilacap, is an estuary with many rivers flowing into it, and has a free connection with the open seas. Plawangan Timur waters suffer increased environmental pressures caused by anthropogenic activities, resulting in pollution, degradation of water bodies, and ecological changes. Ecological changes related to the physical and chemical estuary environment have been considered as major drivers of significant fluctuations in the zooplankton community structure. In order to manage and mitigate the effects of these changes, a prediction of their potential impacts on zooplankton communities is needed. This study aimed to determine the zooplankton community, which includes the abundance index, diversity index, evenness index and dominance index. The method used is a survey method with purposive random sampling at five stations. The F test and the Lackey Drop Microtransect Counting method were used to determine the abundance of zooplankton. The results showed that the abundance of zooplankton ranged from 113-598 ind/L (low); zooplankton diversity index ranged from 1.83-2.03 (medium); zooplankton evenness index ranged from 0.79-0.85 (high) and zooplankton dominance index ranged from 0.166-0.211 (low). Based on PP RI Number 22/2021, the physico-chemical factors of the Plawangan Timur waters are still at the safe concentration for zooplankton, except for the brightness, turbidity, Total Suspended Solid (TSS) and salinity.

Abstract

Heavy metals are widely known pollutants with bioaccumulative nature, so they can be transferred and accumulated in biota, such as mullet fish (Planiliza subviridis). The heavy metals Cd and Cu have different anthropogenic and natural sources. Heavy metals have the potential to absorb existing biota such mullet fish. Fish absorb metals from the water in the body through gills, skin surface and food. This study aims to identify Cd and Cu metals in distribute water, sediment and mullet fish in the Plawangan Timur, Segara Anakan lagoon, Cilacap, Central Java, and the relationship between aquatic media and sediment and mullet fish. The study used a research method with a targeted random sampling method at five stations with four replications. The survey was conducted from April to September 2020. Descriptive data analysis, F-test, regression and correlation. The results showed in water, sediment and mullet fish the heavy metal content of Cd and Cu varied between stations. The correlation between the Cd and Cu metals in water, sediment and mullet fish showed a positive correlation. The content of heavy metal Cd in mullet fish media in Plawangan Timur Segara Anakan Cilacap has exceeded the specified quality standard, while for heavy metal Cu in mullet fish is still below the specified quality standard.

Abstract

Photoperiod affects fish reproduction as it regulates activities of the endocrine glands, which produce the hormones needed for geonadal growth and development, gametogenesis, and reproductive cycles. This study aimed to determine the effects of photoperiod on the hard-lipped barb's reproductive performance by exposing the fish to three photoperiod treatments (light hour: L, darks hour: D), namely 14L:10D (control), 8L:16D (short photoperiod) and 18L:6D (long photoperiod), with four aquaria, each containing 9 fish, serving as replicates. The fish were kept under these photoperiods for 8 weeks. Liver activity, the observable variable in the study, was evaluated by measuring vitellogenin gene expression. Normalized data were then subjected to ANOVA, followed by Tukey's range test. The hard-lipped barb's vitellogenin cDNA was found have a 1136 bp sequence and the vitellogenin precursors encoded cDNA comprising 378 amino acids. The vitellogenin gene in each experimental group saw a significant increase on average when exposed to longer photoperiods (P<0.05), and the highest levels of vitellogenin gene expression occurred under long photoperiods (LP, 18 h light:6 h dark). These results indicate that longer photoperiods stimulate and improve the hard-lipped barb's reproductive performance.

Abstract

Photoperiod is one of the factors that regulate endocrine gland hormone production necessary for gonadal growth and development, gametogenesis, and reproductive cycles in fish. However, studies on the influence of photoperiod on tropical fishes are still limited. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of photoperiod on the hard-lipped barb, particularly the gene expression of its cloned gonadotropin hormones I (GtH-I) and II (GtH-II). The experiment was designed using three treatments: 14L:10D (control), 8L:16D (short photoperiod), and 18L:6D (long photoperiod). Four aquariums with nine fish per tank were used as replicates. The fish were maintained under these photoperiod treatments for eight weeks. Pituitary activity was observed by measuring GtH gene expression. The length of cDNA GtH-I was 222 bp, and the cDNA GtH-II was 354 bp. The GtH-I precursor encoded by the cDNA consisted of 67 amino acids, including the mature peptide. The level of GtH gene expression significantly increased as longer photoperiods were applied. The results indicated that photoperiod length affects the reproductive performance of the hard-lipped barb.
