Abstract

This research is aimed to get a detailed description and analysis about the representation of lexical cohesion in the background of research in undergraduate thesis from English Language Education students at Madako University. The researchers employed quantitative model to analyze the frequency and percentage of lexical cohesion which is used by the students in their writing. The data in this research were obtained from English Language Education undergraduate thesis of students at Madako University. The data collection which is used by the researchers is note taking. The data of this research were analyzed by using categorization of cohesion namely lexical cohesion. The result of this research indicates that the repetition component becomes the most dominant from the three components; the percentage of repetition is 93%, followed by synonym, collocation and superordinate with their percentage 4%, 2%, and 1% respectively.

Abstract

This research design belongs to a pre-experimental research. This research aims to find out whether the use of song lyric can increasing students’ vocabulary at VIII grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Tolitoli. The instrument of collecting data are pretest and posttest. The test was used obtain data in order to find out the effect of using song lyric. The result of the research shows that: 1. By using song lyric can increasing students vocabulary in listening music, 2. There is significant difference between the result of pretest and posttest , the mean score of posttest was 82.42 it was higher than the mean score of pretest 77.09. 3. The testing hypothesis shows that T-count 9.609 was higher than T table 2.036 it indicates that the null hypothesis (Ho) rejected and (Ha) accepted. That ability was increase after they were taught using song lyric. They was better in their listening music.Key word: Vocabulary, Verb, Lyric, Song, Increase.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out whether the application of picture effective to improve students’ ability in writing descriptive text. It is a pre-experimental research. The study is the first grade of MTs. DDI Kel. Baru Tolitoli. It is conducted class (VII A). The data are obtained through a pre-test and post-test. The writer use SPSS 16.0 program to analyzed the data collection. The result of the analysis show that the application of picture contribute greatly to the students in writing descriptive text. The mean score of  pre-test is 65.70 while in the post-test improve up to 79.46. Moreover, the Minimum Mastery Criterion of English lesson is 75 (seventy-five). Then the data of  both test are analyzed by using T-test, and the result show that the T-count value is 10.839 greater than T-table value is 2.045. It can be inferred that the application of picture is very effective to improve students’ ability in writing descriptive text.  Key words: picture, writing, descriptive text.

Abstract

                  The objective of the research is to prove whether the use of crossword puzzle is effective to increase students’ vocabulary. This pre-experimental study uses 23 students as a sample. They are grade VIIIc of SMP Negeri 1 Galang. The procedure of this research consists of pretest, treatment, and posttest. The result of the analysis shows that crossword puzzle contributes greatly to increse the students’ vocabulary. It can be seen by the difference of the mean score between pre-test and post-test. The mean score of pre-test is 67.30 while in the post-test increase up to 90.87. The data of this research are analyzed by using SPSS Program version 16.0. Then the data of both tests are analyzed by using T-test, and the result shows that the T-test value 8.502 is high than T-table value 2.074. It can be inferred that crossword puzzle is very effective to increase students’ vocabulary.  Keywords: Increasing, Crossword Puzzle, Vocabulary.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the correlation between students’ motivation and self-confidence toward speaking ability at the second grade of SMPN 4 Tolitoli. This research is correlation research. It was conducted at the second grade of SMPN 4 Tolitoli. The researcher used two kinds of instrument to collect the data of the three variables. The first instrument is Kusumaningsih’s questionnaire. It consists of 28 items and 5 point likert scale of students’ motivation and for self-confidence consists of 21 items and 5 point likert scale. This questionnaire used to measure the students’ motivation and self-confidence. The second instrument was speaking test. For the result of speaking ability test, the researcher did not conduct the test by herself. But the result was taken from the teacher of Bahasa Inggris. The technique of collecting the data collection in this research was purposive sampling. In measuring the correlation, the researcher used SPSS 21 program in order to make easy and valid. The finding of this research are first shows the result of the students’ motivation toward speaking ability was  < 0,05. It shows that there was a significant correlation between students’ motivation toward speaking ability. For the value of the coefficient correlation, it has a very weak negative correlation because the value was -0,381. The second, the result of self-confidence toward speaking ability was 0,168 > 0,05. It shows that there was no significant correlation between self-confidence toward speaking ability. For the value of the coefficient correlation, it has a weak negative correlation because the value was -0,250. The last result is students’ motivation and self-confidence toward speaking ability simultaneously was 0,065 > 0,05 it shows that there was no correlation between students’ motivation and self-confidence toward speaking ability at the second grade of SMPN 4 Tolitoli.

Abstract

Tulisan ini dimaksudkan untuk membahas proses asimilasi bunyi konsonan bahasa Bugis. Data dalam penelitian ini dianalisis dengan menggunakan teori Distinctive Feature (fitur pembeda) dalam teori fonologi generatif. Data yang digunakan dalam tulisan ini diperoleh dari penutur asli bahasa Bugis dialek Sigeri. Disamping itu, data juga diperoleh dengan menggunakan data intuitif dari penulis sebagai penutur asli bahasa tersebut. Metode yang diterapkan untuk mengetahui proses fonologis adalah deskriptif kualitatif dengan menggunakan tekhnik simak-catat. Analisis hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa fitur pembeda sesuai untuk menjelaskan proses fonologis bahasa Bugis, seperti proses asimilasi bunyi /ŋ/ berubah menjadi bunyi /m/ dan bunyi /b/ dan /g/ berasimilasi dengan bunyi /ʔ/.

Abstract

This paper aims to describe (1) the type and form of deiksis in the story of la Pesok sibawa la Buta and (2) the deixis reference in the story of la Pesok sibawa la Buta in Buginese Language Segeri dialect. The type of this research is descriptive qualitative research. The data used in this paper are taken from the story of la Pesok sibawa la Buta. Furthermore, the object of this research is a grammatical unit of words, phrases, clauses and a sentence containing dexterity, form, and reference in the story of la Pesok sibawa la Buta. The data in this research were analyzed by using a pragmatics theory. In additional, in understanding the story, this paper also used intuitive data from the researcher, who is also a buginese native speaker of Segeri dialect. Method applied to find out the deixis in Buginese language Segeri dialect is descriptive qualitative method. The result of the analysis shows that there are five types of deixis with various forms of deixis based on the story of la Pesok sibawa la Buta; those are person deixis, spatial deixis, temporal deixis, social deixis, and discourse deixis.Keywords: deixis, buginese language, segeri dialect
