Abstract

The need to think critically is essential in this era and people must be competent in analyzing, evaluating, and problem-solving to stay afloat. This study aims to know the level of postgraduate students' critical thinking beliefs and their performance in writing the research methodology section of the research proposal. The study was a mixed-method study in which the quantitative method was applied to calculate the level of critical thinking belief by using a questionnaire, and qualitative data to analyze the draft of postgraduate students’ writing.  The questionnaire was distributed to the participants (five EFL postgraduate students), and documentation of their final project was collected. The study found that the EFL postgraduate students’ critical thinking beliefs were on the level of valuing and less on confidence in critical thinking. The level of valuing critical thinking meant EFL postgraduate students realized that critical thinking is a crucial ability they should master. However, they cannot implement it consistently for their study or social problems in daily life. The result of the content analysis of writing (research methodology) varies widely: some students were proficient in communication and problem-solving, and some were not, and synthesizing abilities became the lowest achievement of students' skills in writing.

Abstract

The fact that teaching English in Indonesia is still driven by textbooks makes not many students have the ability to communicate in English and even they often experience mispronunciation. This study was conducted to find out how to teach allomorphs as a provision to strengthen knowledge of English pronunciation. In addition, this study also seeks to reveal how the challenges faced by EFL teachers in the Allomorph learning process. There are 3 stages that the teacher can do to teach allomorphs through narrative texts; introduction to phonetic symbols, reading the text, and analyzing and practicing the types of allomorphs. From the use of the selected narrative text, it reveals 3 types of allomorphs from 4 types that have been introduced to students in the form of past tense, plural number, and regular possessive. Some of the challenges and problems faced by EFL teachers in teaching English pronunciation, especially allomorphs, is the lack of student motivation to learn. In addition, EFL teachers still hold on to the old philosophy about the lack of importance of learning pronunciation, making this teaching even more difficult. The lack of class hours and the large number of students in EFL classes are also challenges for teachers.

To assess the research data, it employs the Hallidayan theory of Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG). The information was obtained from publicly available websites. The researcher uncovered 81 pieces of data in Joe Biden's speech. The actual data is produced by a mood system that is divided between 75 declarative data and 6 imperative data. Abstract

In this paper, we discuss a critical reflection on the extent to which the use of automated written corrective feedback, in this case, Paper Rater, aligned with the actual classroom implementation, particularly viewed from students’ perception and their writing performance. Students perceive that the feedbacks given during the revision process are useful, particularly in teacher feedback, peer, and the Paper Rater. All students generally understand all the comments/corrections they get from their lecturer, and peer. Some students ignore the whole task after reading the peer's feedback. Students are behaviourally engaged with the multiple feedbacks they receive during the revision process. They also believe that the changes they make in the second draft make my writing better. The feedback they received from their lecturer makes them feel willing to do the task again and will overcome their mistakes with practice. Students are happy with the corrective feedback they receive from teacher, peer and Paper Rater. It clarifies that the students are cognitively engaged with the multiple feedbacks they received. The students also claimed that teacher-student conference is very helpful to mediate their confusion. Keywords: Robots, automated written
