Abstract

Pura Agung Surya Bhuvana in Jayapura is the eastern part of Padma Buana temple. Its establishment was initiated by Balinese Hindus and has become the center of Balinese Hindu socio-cultural activities and an important icon of Jayapura. This article discusses the establishment of Pura Agung Surya Bhuvana from the beginning and its development into the center of Balinese Hindus’ social and cultural-religious activities in Jayapura of Papua. This article based on qualitative research, in which all data was collected through observation, document studies, interviews, and FGD with several members of the pengempon (the temple’s servants) as informants and observers of Papuan culture. Data analyzed descriptively by applying symbol theory and structural-functional theory. The results showed that Hindus established the Pura Agung Surya Bhuvana at Jayapura in 1962. Before, the Hindus of Papua, whose dominantly Balinese migrant, carried out religious activities at Matra’s house. I Made Matra was a civil servant at the Papua Province government office. Over time, the number of Hindus who migrate to the city of Jayapura continues to increase. Therefore in 1979, Hindu leaders in Jayapura built the Pura Agung Surya Bhuvana for the needs of Hindus. Pura Agung Surya Bhuvana was built on Skyline hill in 1982 and it was inaugurated in 1990. In 2012, the Pura Agung Surya Bhuvana was renovated to be more majestic than before, and later on became a center of Hindu worship, the center of Balinese socio-cultural activities, arts center, Hindu religious education centers, and tourist attractions in Papua.

Abstract

The development of Asei Village as a pilot village for the Women's Friendly and Child Protection Village (DRPPA) program has not yet been accompanied by activities that support play and learning spaces for children, as well as women's economic empowerment to enhance artistic entrepreneurship based on the potential of local materials (Khombouw bark). This community service activity aims to provide training in creating bark puppet theater performance models (NEKAY) for women (mama-mama) bark artisans in Asei Village. The Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) method is used in this community service activity through four stages: (1) socialization of environmental- and education-based sustainable tourism (educotourism) programs; (2) training in sketching, creating basic patterns, assembly techniques, doll finishing, and the production of NEKAY ASEI performance merchandise in the form of gift-set hamper souvenirs; (3) assistance in developing performance models through training in vocal performance, musical accompaniment for NEKAY theater performances, and puppet manipulation techniques (movement), using monologue drama scripts based on the stories Friends of Animals and Mama Asei; and (4) development of the NEKAY ASEI theatrical performance through marketing strategies covering the production process, promotional media, and preparation for public performances. The output targets of this community service activity are performance props in the form of Khombouw bark puppets depicting indigenous Papuan children and endemic Papuan animals (the Bird-of-Paradise and the Waigeo Cuscus), as well as the addition of one female character (Mama Asei), and three children's songs with more cheerful and energetic musical arrangements that convey themes of friendship between humans and animals, as well as parental love for children.
