Abstract

Addressing the problem of waste management using the principle of Collect-Transport-Dump (Kumpul-Angkut-Buang) is no longer relevant since it does not solve the source of the problem that is the generated waste from household. As the highest waste generator, household waste management is crucial to reduce the waste volume dumped in the landfill. This means that active participation from the community is a must in waste management and for the community to know how to sort the waste and be able to do it is a necessity. The community service discussed in this article is one of the efforts to improve community capacity in Dusun Sruni, Cangkringan Sub-district, Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta in managing the waste generated from their household by adapting the self-managed waste management well implemented in other cities in Indonesia. The steps implemented in the com-munity service as well as the expected results are described in this article. The findings on the potential problems in educating the community-based waste management as well as futher plans activities to the sustainability of the waste management are also discussed in this article. Keywords: waste management, community participation, community-based waste management

Abstract

The availability of texts and how they are produced have become more multimodal, along with the rapid development of technology. In the English as Foreign Language (EFL) context, this change has influenced classroom instructions where digital multimodal composing (DMC) is incorporated into students’ meaning-making. This qualitative study aims to review recent studies on DMC in the post-secondary EFL contexts to find out the DMC tasks implemented in this setting and what implications have resulted from the tasks. Based on the analytical review of twenty empirical studies from 2015-2022, DMC was generally used to leverage students’ English language skills, train students’ digital literacy skills, advocate students’ voices, build learning engagement and investment, and increase students’ participation in collaborative projects. The implication of the studies showed that teacher support is needed and that the DMC tasks afford to expand students’ meaning-making. Future direction on DMC studies in the post-secondary EFL context is also discussed.

Abstract

The research aimed to reveal the dynamics of the book clubs that the researchers started with and for Indonesian EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students at the university level, as well as the club's impacts on students' learning. Book clubs were essential in nurturing students' reading habits as a community. Studies found that book club activities affected one’s engagement in reading by giving readers the voice, room to participate actively, social support, and the choice to decide what they read. Indonesian university students in the EFL context faced reading engagement issues; the researchers initiated book clubs with the unified mission of growing students' love of reading and forming good reading habits. The research reported a qualitative study of a group of Indonesia Extensive Reading Association (IERA) members sharing reflections on establishing and managing book clubs or literature circles in six universities in Indonesia where the researchers taught. The data of participants' reflections were gathered and analyzed iteratively to find common themes or patterns. As a result, the research finds that the book club activities have fostered the love of reading and inferred the empowerment of collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. The research also reveals that in setting up a book club at the university level, the support of the university and the readers' community and extended networks are needed. For a book club to sustain itself, four aspects must be considered: participants' involvement, product-oriented activities, voluntarism of participants, and rewards.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis preliminary study explores external motivation in L2 extensive reading regarding word-target and pleasure reading. In contrast to the extensive reading principle which discourages the use of assessment to promote pleasure in reading, this study aims to explore how reading targets as one form of assessment is potential to maintain pleasure in reading. This qualitative study was conducted in the Department of Arabic Education at an Islamic private university in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Two reading classes for first-year students were observed. The data were collected from observation, interviews, and students’ reading profiles as recorded in XReading, a learning management system supporting students’ reading practice. The results show that the students use the reading target as an external drive to read and XReading allows students to choose the texts according to their preference and within their linguistic capacity, which instills pleasure in reading. The findings also suggest that a periodical goal and regular teacher monitoring will motivate students to sustain their reading progress. How to Cite:  Paradita, L.I, Surwanti, D., Hunafa, N..
