Abstract

Sago stem bark powder (Metroxylon sago) has the potential as an adsorbent because it contains cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. This study`s purpose was to determine the ability of the chemical activator in the hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid to improve the adsorbent quality of sago stem bark powder according to SNI 06-3730-1995 standards. The method used is the bath system, where the sago stem bark powder is activated by soaking with HCl and H2SO4 for 24 hours using a variation of the adsorbent ratio and activator weight 1: 1, 1: 2, and 1: 3. The analysis was tested through characterization including moisture content, ash content, iodine absorption, and methylene blue absorption, as well as functional groups. From the research results, it was found that the two activators showed an optimal ratio of 1: 2 to provide optimal conditions for moisture content, ash content, iodine and methylene blue adsorption, surface area each of 1.64%; 3.14%; 261.41 mg/g; 4.80 mg/g; 17.76 m2/g for HCl activator and 2.67%; 3.20%; 261.10 mg/g; 4.79 mg/g; 17.67 m2/g for H2SO4 activator. From it this study can be concluded that the use of HCl and H2SO4 solutions did not show a significant difference as an activator to improve the quality of the sago stem bark powder adsorbent, the absorption value of iodine and methylene blue both activators have not been able to make sago stem bark powder as an adsorbent according to SNI 06-3730-1995 standards.

Abstract

Acacia crassicarpa bark powder showed potential as an adsorbent due to its high cellulose content of approximately 50%. This research aimed to determine the optimum contact time, stirring speed, and adsorption kinetic models of Acacia crassicarpa bark powder for Cd(II) removal. Adsorbent characterization was conducted using a Surface Area and Pore Size Analyzer, FTIR, and SEM-EDX, while batch adsorption experiments were conducted to evaluate performance. The adsorbent exhibited a specific surface area of 0.460 m²/g and pore diameters ranging from 32.707 to 45.426 Å, indicating mesoporous characteristics. FTIR analysis identified functional groups such as O–H, C=O, and O–Cd. SEM-EDX analysis before adsorption revealed a rough surface with open, irregular pores and dominant elements including C, N, and O. After adsorption, the surface appeared smoother, with pores filled by Cd(II), as confirmed by Cd peaks in the EDX spectrum. Optimum conditions were obtained at a contact time of 70 minutes and a stirring speed of 120 rpm, resulting in an adsorption efficiency of 96.93% and a 1.3613 mg/g capacity. The adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order model (R2 = 0.9985), indicating that the adsorption mechanism occurred via chemisorption.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Acacia crassicarpa bark powder, a lignocellulosic biomass rich in cellulose, was investigated as a biosorbent for the removal of Methyl Orange (MO) from aqueous solutions. Abstract

Acacia bark powder (Acacia crassicarpa) is a biomass containing cellulose compounds as active sites for adsorption. This study aims to optimise the adsorption parameters of Rhodamine B by acacia bark powder. The method used in this study is batch adsorption. The adsorbent is prepared in powder form with a particle size of 100–200 mesh. SEM-EDS characterisation results showed a porous surface morphology of the adsorbent, dominated by carbon (C) and oxygen (O) elements. BET analysis revealed a specific surface area of 0.460 m²/g, pore volume of 4.361×10⁻³ cc/g, and pore diameter of 379.008 Å. FTIR results indicated the presence of functional groups N-H, -OH, C-H, C=O, C=C, and C-O. Optimal adsorption conditions were obtained at an adsorbent dose of 0.5 g, pH 2, contact time of 50 minutes, stirring speed of 200 rpm, adsorbate concentration of 40 mg/L, and temperature of 50°C, with an adsorption efficiency of 99.04% and adsorption capacity of 3.9326 mg/g. The results of this study indicate that Acacia crassicarpa bark powder has good performance in adsorbing Rhodamine B dye.
