Abstract

Abstract: This study attempts to critically analyze the practices of foreign language teaching particularly English which commonly pay less attention to the accompanying intercultural communication and also to propose an alternative solution to support and promote the character education in this country. It is commonly believed that the practices of the English language teaching are always accompanied by the insertion of foreign cultural values which are not always in harmony with our own values. In line with the national education goals, it seems that the most possible way to overcome this problem is by integrating the Indonesian local cultural values in the practices of the English language teaching to promote character education, which is commonly believed to play important roles in encouraging, improving, and maintaining the spirit of nationalism of our future generation. Keywords: local culture, teaching and learning, English, character education INSERSI BUDAYA LOKAL DALAM PEMBELAJARAN BAHASA INGGRIS GUNA MENDUKUNG TERWUJUDNYA PENDIDIKAN KARAKTER Abstrak: Kajian ini hendak mencoba menelaah secara kritis praktek-praktek pembelajaran bahasa asing khususnya Bahasa Inggris yang umumnya kurang memperhatikan aspek akulturasi budaya yang menyertainya dan juga mencari alternatif solusi pemecahannya demi mendukung tercapainya pendidikan yang berbasis character building di negara ini. Pada kenyataannya, praktek pengajaran bahasa Inggris senantiasa menyediakan ruang adanya insersi nilai-nilai budaya asing masyarakat penuturnya yang belum tentu sejalan dengan nilai-nilai budaya masyarakata kita. Sejalan dengan tujuan pendidikan nasional, nampaknya salah satu upaya yang bisa dilakukan untuk mengantisipasi dampak insersi budaya asing tersebut adalah dengan mengintegrasikan nilai-nilai budaya lokal Indonesia pada pembelajaran bahasa Inggris sebagai alternatif cara guna mendukung upaya pemerintah dalam menggalakkan pendidikan berbasis karakter yang diyakini sangat penting untuk menumbuhkan, meningkatkan dan memelihara semangat nasionalisme generasi penerus bangsa ini. Abstract

Kajian ini mencoba menelaah secara kritis konsep kesopanan berbicara wanita dalam budaya Jawa yang terkait realisasi atau wujud kesopanan wanita Jawa dalam berbicara dengan orang lain dan faktor-faktor apa saja yang mungkin melatar-belakangi konsep yang diyakini tersebut. Metode yang digunakan untuk mengkaji topik ini adalah dengan menggunakan deskripsi permasalahan yang disandarkan pada konsep kesopanan dari Foley, yang berupa dua jenis kesopanan secara umum yakni positive and negative politeness. Hasil kajian ini dapat dinyatakan sebagai berikut. Pertama, secara umum wanita Jawa lebih sering menggunakan strategi kesopanan positif daripada strategi kesopanan negatif ketika berbicara. Hal itu pula yang menyebabkan seorang wanita akan lebih cepat akrab dengan wanita lain ataupun dengan lawan jenis yang baru saja dikenalnya dibandingkan laki-laki. Strategi kesopanan negatif, banyak digunakan wanita Jawa dalam ungkapan permintaan maaf ketika berbicara. Kedua, dalam kajian ini juga teridentifikasi faktor-faktor yang melatarbelakangi konsep kesopanan tersebut, di faktor itu ialah adanya stereotipe dalam masyarakat Jawa yang mendudukkan wanita sebagai second sex setelah laki-laki dan juga adanya sikap kurang percaya diri wanita untuk mengungkapkan ide ataupun gagasan sebagai akibat stereotipe di masyarakat The research tries to critically explore polite concepts of women communication in Javanese culture relating realization or manifestation of Javanese woman communication with other and to investigate which factors that possibly underpin the conceivable concept. The method employed to investigate the topic is problem description based on politeness concept proposed by Foley, which is generally realized in two types of politeness that are positive and negative politeness. The result of the research shows some findings as follow. First, generally Javanese woman more often uses positive politeness strategy that negative politeness strategy when she communicates. Because of that strategy, compare to Javanese man, Javanese woman is more familiar with other woman or oposite sex whom just meets. Negative politeness strategy is more often used by Javanese woman in expressing apology. Second, the reseach also identifies factors that underpin the concept of politeness. The concept reveals the existance of stereotype in Javanese society which places woman as second sex after man and the woman's unconfidence to express idea or opinion as a result of that stereotype.

Abstract

This article discusses the need to prioritize Indonesian cultural character values in English textbooks as a strategy to maintain cultural identity and counter the hegemony of Western cultural values in language learning in Indonesia. In the context of this research, the phenomenon is based on English textbooks for high school students in grades XI and XII in Indonesia. This research method uses library research. The main instrument of this research is the researcher himself as a "human instrument." The data analysis technique is descriptive qualitative, including data collection, display and discussion, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study show the following. Firstly, this study notes several trends that may be troubling, including the lack of representation of local values and the dominance of Western elements. Secondly, the factors causing this slide to involve both external and internal aspects. Externally, relating to the theory that language learning is inseparable from cultural learning provides a foundation for internalizing Western culture in English language learning. Internally, the influence of modernism and the syndrome of being a former Western colony led to an inferiority complex in cultural awareness, reinforcing the adoption of Western cultural values as the inevitable ideal standard. By exploring concrete strategies to promote Indonesian cultural values, this article advocates for a profound change in English teaching approaches to build a sense of identity and cultural diversity amidst the challenges of global values hegemony.

Abstract

This study is concerned with three aspects of grammatical equivalence occurring in translation, namely, person, tense and voice. In particular, this study tries to answer some questions related to the notion of grammatical equivalence in English-Bahasa Indonesia translation related to the categories of person (pronoun), tenses, and voice. This study is a descriptive qualitative one which tries to describe and delineate the phenomenon of translation naturally without the intervention of an experiment or an artificially contrived treatment. This kind of study requires a holistic perspective of there search area in order to gather as much information as possible and to avoid any manipulation or interference in the study context. The results of the study have shown the followings. Firstly, most of the English pronouns with person reference are translated by the personal pronouns in Bahasa Indonesia, some are not translated by the personal pronouns in Bahasa Indonesia since their meaning are considered known from their context, and some other are not translated by personal pronouns but rather by repeating then our reference. Secondly, the category of tense in Englis his presented morphologically by changing the verb forms whereas in Bahasa Indonesia it is presented lexically by adding words indicating the time relation of the event presented by the verb. Thirdly, both English and Bahasa Indonesia have the category of voice but they do not always use this category with the same frequency. The active forms in English are not always translated into active forms in Bahasa Indonesia, and vice versa.

Abstract

This study is to analyse the representation and characteristics of speech acts in Indonesian high school EFL textbooks, with two focuses: 1) the representation of speech acts; and 2) the characteristics of their presentation. Using qualitative method and critical discourse analysis, the data were taken from the textbooks of grade X by Widiati, U., Rohmah, Z., & Furidah (2017; 2018) and grade XI by Bashir (2017). The researcher acted as an instrument, using qualitative descriptive analysis. The results of this study are as follows. First, the presentation of speech acts already exists in the textbooks, but it is inadequate, because there are only four: assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, while there is no declarative type. In addition, the representation is also less varied. Second, the characteristics of speech acts presentation are adequate to facilitate understanding for students in developing their English competence. The speech acts are presented in the form of speaking skill materials and dialogue examples. This study underlines the need to improve the representation and presentation of functional speech acts in Indonesian high school EFL education.
