Abstract

The research aimed to track the distribution of in metaphors and explore their ontological function in the abstracts of English research articles in the sub-disciplines of theoretical linguistics and pragmatics. The lack of empirical evidence on the subject had become the inspiration to base the research on a corpus. The corpus consisted of 40 research article abstracts; 20 from Journal of Linguistics and another 20 from Journal of Pragmatics. By using a quantitative method, the results show that theoretical linguistics abstracts are more densely populated with ‘in’ metaphors. However, in terms of in-preposition phrase topic complement variations, they are less varied. Qualitatively, the results confirm a notion proposed by Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) that ‘in’ metaphors function cognitively by providing ontological status to abstract objects. Their existence proves to play an important role in academic texts.

Abstract

Di dalam artikelnya yang berjudul "The Importance of CulturalContext I" (JELL.

Abstract

This study investigates lexical innovations in The maze runner by James Dashner (2010), especially in terms of irregular word-formation techniques. 34 units of lexical innovations were found and classified according to their word classes: nouns, verbs, adjectives, and exclamations. The analysis focuses mainly on the examination of the word-formation processes undergone by the lexical units. The results reveal that four irregular word-formation techniques were used in the coinage of the new lexicon: compounding with left-headedness, compounding with unrecognizable constituent, compounding with irregular combination, and rhyming.

Abstract

Balai Budaya Minomartani (BBM) is a community center of Indonesian culture and arts, which has attracted a good number of domestic and foreign visitors. It is located in Minomartani village in Sleman, Yogyakarta. It has a community radio station on FM 107.9 Mhz. Although the radio is quite popular among the surrounding residents, it has a very limited program and none of them is for the young generation, especially children. This good potential has drawn the attention of the Community Engagement team of the English Department of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences of Universitas Gadjah Mada to provide some support in the form of English Lessons radio program. As the targets of the program are children in the community surrounding the center, the lessons make use of mostly fables to be the main teaching materials.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the use of politeness strategies in the performance of commissive illocutionary acts in Joseph R. Biden’s inauguration speech. The politeness strategies were classified based on the theory of politeness strategies by Brown and Levinson (1987). The commissive illocutionary acts performed are promise, guarantee, and refusal. The result showed that there are 39 performances of commissive illocutionary acts that are found in the speech. The classification and analysis showed that out of 39 utterances, there are 17 occurrences of bald on record, 10 occurrences of positive politeness, and 12 occurrences of off-record. The result shows that, in delivering his inauguration speech, Biden tends to use the most straightforward way of speaking to issue an act.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of sexual assault survivors in 67 articles from The Jakarta Post (2016-2023) using corpus-assisted critical discourse analysis. Employing concordance analysis and sentiment evaluation, the research highlights a notable focus on the ages of victims, particularly teenagers, advocating for victim-centered language in public discourse. The findings reveal shortcomings in sexual and reproductive health services, legal issues faced by teenage victims, and gaps in assistance programs. The study calls for comprehensive support structures and legal reforms to address persistent challenges. Sentiment analysis underscores the deliberate use of negative language, emphasizing the need for objective reporting. Overall, the research emphasizes the importance of unbiased reporting, robust support mechanisms, and legal reforms to address the multifaceted challenges faced by rape victims.

Abstract

High school is an important period for the development of one's personality. Positive or negative influences can easily be absorbed by teenagers at that age. This is considered a good opportunity for the PkM team of the English Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada to share knowledge with the students of SMA Muhammadiyah Bumiayu. With a mentoring approach (online & offline), the team invited the high school students to learn to write descriptive feature stories centered on the topic of tourist attractions around the Bumiayu District and the traditional culinary specialties of the area. The writings produced by the assisted students show good success from the mentoring system applied, but there are still some linguistic and organizational problems that need to be improved.

Abstract

The 42nd ASEAN Summit was held in Indonesia, making Indonesia the chairman of the Summit. Joko Widodo, as the president, represented the country to welcome the ASEAN members and open the summit and the meetings by giving remarks and statements. This study attempted to examine how interpersonal metafunction is used in the opening remarks and press statements as well as to reveal the power strategy and ideology depicted in the opening remarks and press statements. Eight opening remarks and two press statements were analyzed utilizing Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics. Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis was employed to reveal the power relations and the ideology. The study found declarative, interrogative, and imperative were the mood types in which it utilized probability, obligation, and inclination modality. It showed that Joko Widodo acted as the initiator to promote collaboration to achieve ASEAN’s goals.
