Abstract

This article discusses about the accuracy and readability on the translations of onomatopoeia in The Maze Runner novel translated by Yunita Candra in order to evaluate the translation quality. All onomatopoeia both from English or translated novel were collected and then looked for the meaning in Cambridge Dictionary, Oxford Dictionary, Indonesian Dictionary ( KBBI), and in some sources such as books, internet, or cross checking from native or experts, then compared and determined the accuracy and readability level using Translation Accuracy Assessment Instrument and Translation Readability Assessment Instrument [1]. The result showed that accuracy and readability related to each other. Onomatopoeia translated accurately tended to have low readability level and there were onomatopoeia intentionally translated inaccurately to obtain high readability level. Nevertheless, there were also the translations of onomatopoeia with high accuracy level and readability level.

Abstract

The services activity was conducted counseling of plant propagation techniques and control of fruit fly pests on horticultural crops, especially fruit plants. The methods used in the service activities are lectures, discussions, field practice, evaluation, and publication of the results of counseling. The results were showed: (1) increasing farmers' insights on plant propagation techniques, and (2) pest control on horticultural crops, especially fruit flies. The activity had an impact on improving the skills of farmers, especially the propagation techniques of fruit plants. Also, horticultural farmers have alternative business skills that are economically valuable. The farmers also have been the skill to control fruit fly pests, especially in horticultural farmers (fruit planting) groups.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study aimed to describe the type of vegetation and soil fertility status in the protected forest areas of Tarakan Island (HLPT). The results showed that: (1) the dominant vegetation types in HLPT belong to a group of Dipterocarpaceae, such as meranti (Shorea sp), keruing (Dipterocarpus), Resak (Vatica sp), Merawan (Hopea sangal) and Tengkawang (Shorea pinanga); (2) The soil types in the HLPT area are dominated by Podsolic, with a very acid soil category to sour, having a low ability in holding and exchanging kation, total nitrogen levels from very low to low, levels of C-Organic from very low to high, the phosphorus (P) content available classified as very low to very high and the potassium (K) content available relatively moderate to very high, and (3) the soil fertility status of HLPT is very low to low with HLPT soil texture in form of clay, sandy loam and loamy sand.

Abstract

The research aims is to find the main causes of disharmony between behavior ofusers community and the management objectives of Protection Forest Resource of TarakanIsland that reviewed based on the perceptions and motivations. Based on the researchresults: First, the level of perception of the users of Protection Forest Resource of TarakanIsland included in the medium category, but for the functional benefits and the existentialbenefits included in the low category. While, the level perception of the existential benefitsincluded in medium category and other benefits include high category. Second, the level ofeconomic and environmental motivations of users’ communities in utilization of ProtectionForest Resource of Tarakan Island is low, but the level of social motivation toward ProtectionForest Resource of Tarakan Island is high. Third, the level of public perception of functionalbenefits is low. Low levels of economic motivation and the motivation of social environmentincluding the high motivation of the users’ community in utilization Protection ForestResource of Tarakan Island become the main causes of disharmony between behavior ofusers’ community and the management objectives of Protection Forest Resource of Tarakan Island.

Abstract

Abstract

Community activities in the city forest area have caused degradation and damage, therefore it requires a responsefrom the parties, especially the community in the area. The research aims to describe the supporting policies, the distribution of land area and cover, perceptions, participation, responses, and formulate policy implications. The methods used include qualitative content analysis, remote sensing land cover and geographic information systems and qualitative descriptive analysis using the PSR approach. The results of the research are: supporting policies including Government Regulations, Ministerial Regulations, Ministerial Decrees, Tarakan Mayor Regulations, and Tarakan Mayor Decrees the area has not been distributed proportionally with the dominance in the East Tarakan District, community perception is low which results in activities that are not in accordance with the designation of the land, giving birth to land tenure conditions and the user community does not participate in management. Residents are involved in sustainability and the policy implications of this research are the revised RTRW for the City of Tarakan and model of government and community partnership in management which are formulated and stipulated in the PERDA

Abstract

The utilization of wetland areas poses a threat to the wetland ecosystems’s vitality. The Kayan Sembakung Delta in North Kalimantan Province is one of the wetland ecosystems that is widely used by humans for various activities, raising concenrs about its sustainability. This study aims to assess the area’s carrying capacity and environmental capacity as well as the level of welfare of small farmers. The research was conducted in March-June 2020 in Tanjung Buka Village, Tanjung Palas Tengah District, Bulungan Regency, which is part of the Kayan Sembakung Delta area. The study employed an analysis of the carrying capacity of the environment as well as an analysis of the poverty and welfare assessment of farmer households using the Nested Sphere of Poverty (NESP) approach. The results showed that Tanjung Buka Village has an area with a high carrying capacity and environmental capacity as a food provider covering an area of 61,352.12 ha. Small farmers experience subjective and objective welfare in the moderate category. Increasing the welfare of small-scale farmers can be done through efforts such as repairing houses below proper standards, meeting food needs, increasing consumption of protein (meat, eggs, fish), providing clean water, diversifying income sources, ease of access to food. sources of employment, promoting conservation of wood and plant species, securing  land tenure, complying with local regulations, and improving infrastructure JEL Classification A13; B40; B55

Abstract

Representation is defined as a method of investigating a specific thing seen through language, action, or voice, which has different ways of representing something. People can see how certain issues are represented in the way they are delivered or reported in various media, whether in written or spoken language. To discover goals and messages in mass media, a researcher employed the analysis of certain discourse through the consideration in the use of words, phrases, and clauses that are arranged within media. This present research investigated how Indonesian police is represented through The Jakarta Post regarding the murder case of one police agent which offers new explanation regarding the way a news media elaborates on the Indonesian police through the language reflection used by the media through the three-dimension model of Fairclough. A qualitative research methodology is employed together with the application of a three-dimensional level of Norman Fairclough CDA. The results indicated that The Jakarta Post is neutral, with no bias toward either party, the public society, or the policies. It depicts how the Indonesian police handled the case. However, it still indicates public mistrust in the action or irregularities in the investigation and autopsy results, as evidenced by the responses of specific organizations in it. === Representasi didefinisikan sebagai metode untuk menyelidiki satu hal tertentu yang dapat dilihat melalui bahasa, tindakan, atau suara, yang masing-masing memiliki cara yang berbeda dalam merepresentasikan sesuatu. Masyarakat dapat melihat bagaimana isu tertentu direpresentasikan dalam cara penyampaian atau pemberitaannya di berbagai media, baik tertulis maupun lisan melalui bahasa. Untuk menemukan tujuan dan pesan dalam media massa, penelitian dapat menggunakan analisis wacana tertentu melalui pertimbangan penggunaan kata, frase, dan klausa yang disusun dalam media. Penelitian ini menyelidiki bagaimana polisi Indonesia direpresentasikan melalui The Jakarta Post terkait kasus pembunuhan salah satu agen polisi, dimana akan menawarkan penjelasan baru mengenai cara media berita mengelaborasi polisi Indonesia melalui refleksi bahasa yang digunakan media melalui model tiga dimensi dari Fairclough. Metode deskriptif kualitatif digunakan bersama dengan penerapan level tiga dimensi AWK Norman Fairclough. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa The Jakarta Post netral, tidak memihak salah satu pihak, masyarakat umum, atau pihak polisi. Ini menggambarkan bagaimana polisi Indonesia menangani kasus tersebut. Namun, hal itu tetap menunjukkan ketidakpercayaan publik terhadap tindakan atau kejanggalan dalam penyelidikan dan hasil otopsi, terbukti dari tanggapan organisasi tertentu di dalamnya.

Abstract

The This study is objected to describe the decomposition of meaning that includes distortion, narrowing and expansion as well as omissions in the translation of cultural terms in a novel titled alfu laylah wa laylah along with their impact on target text. This research utilized a descriptive method with a qualitative research approach. The data collection method used in several stages, as follow: 1) reading the entire contents of the novel; 2) identifying; 3) recording and; 4) giving code and page on each data. The data were subsequently analyzed in several steps including 1) classifying the types of cultural terms in the novel; 2) identifying the meaning of cultural terms in source language and target language; 3) comparing two words in source language and target language; 4) interpreting the findings in form of analysis. It was 29 data found, there were seven cultural terms that experience meaning distortion, twelve with narrowing and expansion of meaning, and ten others underwent omission. In conclusion, four factors of information reduction result in loss.

Abstract

High school is an important period for the development of one's personality. Positive or negative influences can easily be absorbed by teenagers at that age. This is considered a good opportunity for the PkM team of the English Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada to share knowledge with the students of SMA Muhammadiyah Bumiayu. With a mentoring approach (online & offline), the team invited the high school students to learn to write descriptive feature stories centered on the topic of tourist attractions around the Bumiayu District and the traditional culinary specialties of the area. The writings produced by the assisted students show good success from the mentoring system applied, but there are still some linguistic and organizational problems that need to be improved. === Masa SMA adalah suatu periode penting bagi perkembangan kepribadian seseorang. Pengaruh positif ataupun negatif dengan mudah dapat diserap oleh remaja di usia tersebut. Hal ini dianggap sebagai kesempatan baik bagi tim PkM Program Studi (Prodi) Sastra Inggris, Fakultas Ilmu Budaya, Universitas Gadjah Mada untuk berbagi ilmu kepada siswa-siswa SMA Muhammadiyah Bumiayu. Dengan pendekatan pendampingan/mentoring dan sistem bauran (tatap muka online & tatap muka langsung), tim mengajak siswa-siswi SMA tersebut untuk belajar menulis cerita fitur yang bersifat deskriptif yang berpusat pada topik tempat wisata di sekitar wilayah Kecamatan Bumiayu dan kuliner tradisional khas daerah tersebut. Tulisan yang dihasilkan oleh siswa dampingan menunjukkan keberhasilan yang baik dari sistem mentoring yang diterapkan. Akan tetapi, masih terdapat beberapa masalah kebahasaan dan pengorganisasian yang harus diperbaiki.
