Abstract

This study examines the development and maintenance of English skills from the perspective of higher education alumni during and after studying abroad. The researcher consider attitudes, more specifically how, what, and to what extent attitudes could encourage development and maintenance in the context of study abroad from the 120 respondents’ perspective. This study deploys quantitative data collection in form of a survey with both multiple choice items and open-ended questions. The numeric items were analyzed with tabulation and the open-ended questions responses were analyzed with the stages of Thematic Analysis. Foremost, the findings reveal that the respondents perceive oral production and fluency as the major skills that improved during the study abroad period, followed by an increase in vocabulary knowledge and listening skills. Most respondents regarded the improvement as an influence of high exposure to spoken English. Secondly, the majority of respondents conceive that their English keeps improving after the study abroad period. The most frequent reasons for using English are social life and entertainment purposes, which are mostly individual preferences, followed by academic purposes such as joining a course or working on journal articles. Work purpose, surprisingly, is not the main reason of using English after study abroad period. The conclusion is that study abroad benefits the respondents in developing their English and that attitude on affective domain (how we perceive a language) and conative (behaviour toward a language) help to maintain the cognitive domain (knowledge on a language) and its maintenance.

Abstract

Perilaku bullying memiliki banyak dampak buruk, baik verbal maupun nonverbal. Perilaku buruk ini merupakan hal yang sering dilakukan oleh sebagian anak saat ini, baik di lingkungan rumah maupun sekolahnya. Bullying merupakan fenomena yang sering luput dari perhatian kita sebagai masyarakat umum dan antar sekolah. Kami dari tim Program Pengabdian Masyarakat (PkM) Universitas Pamulang ingin berkontribusi memberikan penyuluhan anti bullying kepada anak sekolah di Taman Baca Komunitas Ciputat, tujuannya adalah meminimalisir bullying, dan meningkatkan kecerdasan anak dalam bersosialisasi. Taman Baca Masyarakat (TBM) dipilih karena banyaknya siswa yang berkumpul disana, terdapat 50 orang dari berbagai sekolah, dari tingkat Play Group hingga SMA. Solusi yang diusulkan atau ditawarkan dalam kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ini antara lain: 1) Dongeng dengan tema anti bullying, 2) Pendidikan anti bullying, dan 3) Membuat poster anti bullying. Metode pendekatan yang digunakan dalam kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM) adalah pendampingan yang dilakukan dengan brainstorming. Output berdasarkan solusi masalah yang diajukan adalah agar anak memahami tentang bahaya bullying sehingga pengurangan bullying di sekolah meningkatkan kesadaran anak terhadap teman-temannya, dan rukun serta kooperatif.

Abstract

Synchronous e-learning is a distance learning through a real-time live web-conference platform. In this learning, students' reflection on their experience in using the system is beneficial to the overall success. This study explores students' experience and what they perceive from the implementation of synchronous e-learning through zoom conference system. Using exploratory sequential design, the data were collected from 62 students taking an English subject in a university in Indonesia. Classroom observations and a set of a questionnaire by a five-point Likert scale were used to collect the data. Findings from observations denote there are three factors of activities: communication, lesson material and study process. Findings from the questionnaire indicate positive answers from all three factors. The students agreed that they could communicate at ease before the lesson starts, question and answer during the study process, and could work collaboratively through the breakout rooms. Through the whiteboard/shared screen feature in zoom conference, students described that they were able to give feedback to each other. Moreover, they mostly agreed that materials to the lesson could be accessed and understood in e-learning. However, with all the positive feedback on the three factors, they agreed that the traditional face-to-face still gives easier and better access from the factors of communication and materials compared to the e-learning.

Abstract

Berangkat dari permasalahan yang terjadi di lapangan mengenai rendahnya kemampuan berkomunikasi didepan umum menggunakan bahasa Inggris dan rendahnya minat belajar budaya Indonesia, maka tema PkM yang diangkat adalah “Merangkul Perbedaan Budaya Melalui Public Speaking - Pelatihan Public Speaking Bagi Siswa Sekolah Dasar Dengan Tema Cinta Budaya Indonesia dan Merangkul Kebhinekaan". Dari permasalahan yang diangkat, PkM ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan public speaking anak sekaligus menanamkan rasa nasionalisme pada anak. Ada anak SD kelas 1 (satu) sampai dengan 6 (enam) yang tinggal di Cendana Residence Rw 023, Pamulang, Tangerang Selatan ikut berpartisipasi. Kegiatan dilaksanakan selama kurang lebih 2 (dua) minggu yang dilaksanakan pada tanggal 22 Mei – 5 Juni 2022 dan dilakukan secara hybrid, online dan offline. Kegiatan offline dilakukan pada awal dan akhir pertemuan saat pengenalan public speaking dan pada performance day atau hari dimana anak-anak menunjukkan kemampuan public speakingnya setelah pelatihan online selama 2 (dua) minggu di depan umum. Peserta sangat antusias dengan PkM ini dan memiliki motivasi yang kuat dalam menunjukkan kemampuannya. Hasilnya, mereka meningkatkan pengetahuan mereka tentang budaya Indonesia dan suku-sukunya yang berbeda serta belajar untuk memahami perbedaan.

Abstract

Attitude is one of the most prominent issues in bilingualism. It becomes crucial and interesting because it is related to how speakers preserve their language to avoid language attrition and to maintain their established language competence. This study investigates the attitudes of two Indonesian siblings, a 19-year old and a 24–year old, who migrated to Australia with their parents in 2002. This study looks into their attitudes towards their Indonesian L1 after living for 11 years in Australia. An interview was conducted along with a guided questionnaire with both participants. The results revealed that their attitudes toward their Indonesian L1 are different regardless of having had the same treatments from their parents. The younger sibling seems to be more reluctant to use his Indonesian L1 and now, he has difficulties in speaking in Indonesian. Accordingly, the possibility of his partial loss of his L1 was indicated. The results further show that their different attitudes are one of the factors that foster the language loss suffered by the younger participant, especially the loss of vocabulary knowledge. The study also found some demographic factors such as the age of onset and the level of education when he started studying at an Australian school that may have influenced the difficulties that the younger participant has with production of his L1.

Abstract

This research investigates verbal interaction in collaborative writing between students from two countries with different L1 when writing an academic essay in a foreign language writing class. Eight students from Indonesia and China participated, and were divided into Indonesian-Indonesian pairs and Indonesian-Chinese pairs. Using the method of qualitative content analysis, the transcripts from their communication were coded inductively and then categorized. The findings denote that there are three categories in their spoken interaction: what to write (ideas), where to write (structural organization), and how to write (language-related). Similarly, all pairs focused their discussions on ‘what to write’ (ideas to be written in the essays). However, Indonesian-Indonesian pairs also discussed ‘the language-related aspects’ mostly about lexical choice and the meaning, more than the mixed pairs. The Indonesian-Chinese pairs conversed, in most of their time, about the content through sharing, explaining, and negotiating their ideas. As the implication, in order to produce an essay with the same length and type, the mixed pairs executed more time in their spoken interaction.

Abstract

PkM ini bertujuan memberikan pelatihan bahasa Inggris melalui kejar paket C bagi warga binaan Lembaga Pemasyarakatan kelas IIA Bandung dengan tujuan mengikuti ujian kejar paket C dan lulus setara dengan jenjang Sekolah Menengah Akhir. Diantara warga binaan pada lapas tersebut, terdapat binaan yang berada pada rentang usia produktif di antara 18-20 tahun yang telah putus sekolah menengah atas. Metode yang digunakan adalah 1) pelatihan bahasa Inggris dengan menggunakan silabus kejar paket C sesuai website Departemen Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan sehingga sesuai dengan kebutuhan warga lapas 2) Mock-test atau latihan ujian yang diberikan untuk mengukur hasil belajar warga lapas yang ikut pelatihan. Pelatihan diberikan selama dua bulan dengan hasil sebagai berikut: 1) peserta pelatihan mendapatkan bekal ilmu bahasa Inggris untuk mengikuti ujian kejar paket C, 2) Peserta pelatihan mendapatkan prediksi nilai ujian sebagai tolak ukur keberhasilan pada ujian kejar paket C sesungguhnya.

Abstract

Globalisasi berpengaruh terhadap menurunnya minat dan apresiasi generasi muda Indonesia terhadap budaya bangsa sendiri. Kesenian tradisional tidak menarik untuk dipraktikkan karena dianggap tidak modern dan mempelajari seni bangsa lain dianggap lebih modern.  Pengabdian Masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kecintaan terhadap budaya Indonesia dan melatih cara menulis cerita pendek bergambar sebagai solusi permasalahan. Metode kegiatan ini adalah pelatihan menulis dalam dua Bahasa yaitu Indonesia dan Inggris yang dilakukan secara luring, dilanjutkan dengan mentoring selama satu bulan untuk penulisan buku yang dilakukan secara luring dan daring. Hasil dari kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah sebuah buku cerita pendek karya siswa SMA bertema budaya pulau Jawa yaitu daerah asal mitra kami yang terdiri dari 5 bab yaitu bab 1. DKI Jakarta dan Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta, bab 2. Jawab Barat, bab 3. Banten, bab 4. Jawa Tengah, dan bab 5. Jawa Timur. Hasil dari penulisan buku ini telah memberikan dampak positif kepada siswa peserta PkM dalam mempelajari berbagai macam budaya yang ada di 5 provinsi di pulau Jawa dan melatih kreativitas mereka dalam menuliskan dalam bentuk cerita pendek. Kesimpulan dari kegiatan PkM ini adalah bahwa cerita bergambar efektif dalam meningkatkan ketertarikan generasi muda mengenal budaya dan buku karya mereka juga akan bermanfaat untuk siswa-siswa lain di Indonesia  lebih luas sebagai sarana mengenal budaya.
