Abstract

Corrective feedback (CF) for academic writing is essential to improve writing skills. This study discovers how CF strategies are reinvented in an academic writing synchronous course. Therefore, within the framework of sociocultural and humanistic approaches in education, 71 students from two non-quasi classes in a university contributed by sharing their points of view for the CF they received. Class observations and surveys were conducted to gather data on how the CF was given and how the students perceived it. The main findings indicate that the CF was choral to the class, explicit, unfocused, and mixed of oral and written. Furthermore, peer reviews were conducted as the follow-up activity. Through these CF strategies, most participants have positive acceptance and comprehension. They also approve that their academic writing skills improved after the course ended. Despite a small number of students who preferred a direct one-on-one basis, this research shows pedagogical CF strategies and efficacies towards independent learning that are prevalent and feasible to the continuous online or hybrid learning systems nowadays.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze semiotic signs in two of Christopher Nolan’s movie posters; Interstellar and Oppenheimer. The method used in descriptive qualitative using Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory: denotation, connotation and myth. The data of two posters Interstellar (2014) and Oppenheimer (2023) were taken from Cinematerial website which was selected and identified following Barthes’ (1972) theory of semiotics. The findings yield a total of 27 data that consists of; 11 denotations, 11 connotations, and 5 myths. Through analyzing these signs, we can gain insight into the films’ narratives, plot, and the art direction of the movie poster design as a communication tool. It can be concluded that semiotic analysis gives a valuable approach to understanding the deeper meanings of visual media. As such, different individual’s experience or cultural background can develop their own meaning of the posters.

Abstract

This study is aimed to find out grammatical errors and the sources of errors in students’ recount texts. The subject of this study is the third-grade students of SMAN 22 Jakarta in the academic year 2023/2024 which consists of 23 students. Specifically, their recount texts focused on recounting their vacation activities. From the entire third-grade class of 23 students, 16 students were selected as the study sample using the purposive sampling technique. This study used a qualitative approach to analyze and identify grammatical errors. The analysis was carried out by referring to Dulay, Burt & Krashen’s theory, a surface strategy taxonomy consisting of Omission, Addition, Misformation, and Misordering and the sources of errors based on Ellis’s theory are Interlingual Transfer and Intralingual Transfer. The result of this study showed that the total number of grammatical errors made by the students in their recount texts is 32 errors. Which consist of 4 omission errors, 7 addition errors, 8 misordering erros, and 13 misinformation errors. Accordingly, the most frequent error is misinformation error which corresponds to 13 (40,6%) of the total error. Furthermore, this study also revealed that most of the errors are caused by Intralingual Transfer (30 errors or 94% of the total error). Based on these findings, it concluded that the students had some difficulties in applying English grammar rules in their writings. Therefore, it is suggested to be aware and pay more attention to improve the English teaching and learning process.

Abstract

This research aims to identify a linguistic feature based on The Ellen Show with Kris and Kylie Jenner. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method, focusing on a transcript of his utterances and conversations. Grice's (1975) theory is applied to identify instances where conversational maxims are flouted during the interview. Grice's theory outlines four maxims that contribute to effective communication: quantity (supplying accurate information in the proper amount), quality (supplying accurate information), relevance (maintaining the subject), and manners (being brief and organized). The findings reveal six of the maxims of quantity, three of the maxims of quality, three of relevance, and eight of manner. The analysis shows that the most prevalent type is the flouting of the maxim of manner. It indicates that the maxim of manners is the one that gets violated the most frequently, which suggests that the conversation often lacks clarity and is characterized by overlapping speech and indirectness. This prevalence highlights that the interaction between Kris and Kylie Jenner on The Ellen Show tends to be less straightforward and more complex, with participants frequently speaking in ways that could be clearer and more orderly.
