Abstract

Migrasi Magis is a research-based dance creation that reinterprets the Sijundai magical phenomenon in Minangkabau culture. The ritual involves the use of spells and saluang music believed to possess supernatural power that psychologically and physically affects victims. Through observation, exploration, improvisation, formation, and evaluation, the artist transforms elements of space, time, energy, and property into visual symbols of the spell’s potency. The reinterpretation approach transforms this spiritual practice into an artistic expression through dance theatre, marked by dramatic tension, symbolism, and emotional intensity. The work embodies magical aesthetics derived from traditional rituals while portraying human desires, vengeance, and remorse. Migrasi Magis demonstrates how dance serves as a reflective space for social, spiritual, and psychological phenomena within Minangkabau society. Field data were collected through interviews with shamans, performance observations, and literature review, strengthening conceptual validity, aesthetic choices, and cultural context. This work illustrates that performing arts can negotiate tradition and modernity through contextual artistic interpretation

Abstract

This study aims to describe the role of school management in the management and development of dance extracurricular activities at SMA Negeri 2 Koto Kampar Hulu. This research employed a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. The data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving the principal, the extracurricular dance instructor, and students participating in the dance extracurricular program. This study applied the management theory of Robbins and Coulter, which consists of four management functions: planning, organizing, directing, and controlling. The findings indicate that the implementation of the management functions planning, organizing, directing, and controlling has not yet been carried out optimally. Efforts to develop the dance extracurricular program include supporting students' performance activities, planning the development of training facilities, and preparing student participation in art activities outside the school. Based on thefindings, it can be concluded that the role of school management in managing and developing the dance extracurricular program needs to be improved through the optimization of management functions so that the program can be implemented more effectively, systematically, and sustainably.

Abstract

This study aims to examine and describe the development of the Tirik Lalan Dance among the Banjar community in Tembilahan, Riau Province. Tirik Lalan Dance is a traditional paired dance characteristic of the Banjar ethnic group who migrated to Tembilahan through trade routes. Over time, this dance has undergone choreographic development due to interaction with the local Malay culture. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive analytical approach, and is analyzed using the Cultural Development Theory by Linton, the Cultural Ecology Theory by Steward, and the Choreography Theory by Y. Sumandio Hadi. Data was collected through literature study, observation at Sanggar Citra Sebati, in-depth interviews with traditional artists, and documentation. The results of this study show that development occurred in three main elements of presentation, namely movement, music, and costume. The movements that were originally straightforward and open as typical of Banjar developed into more subtle, closed, and symbolic forms, adapting to Islamic values and Malay aesthetics, such as the integration of Malay salutation and soft steps resembling Zapin. The accompanying music developed with variations of the gambus and accordion. Meanwhile, the dancers' costumes transitioned from Baju Kurung Basisit to Kebaya Labuh and Songket with Pucuk Rebung motifs. This development proves a dynamic cultural adaptation without eliminating the original philosophical values of the dance.

Abstract

This article discusses the creation process of the dance work Budaya Merantau, which originates from the socio-cultural phenomenon of migration in Minangkabau society. The study focuses on how the surau, as a space for religious education, customary learning, martial arts practice, and character formation among Minangkabau boys, is reinterpreted as a conceptual foundation for dance creation. The main issue addressed is how migration patterns expressed in Minangkabau proverbs and oral philosophy can be transformed into a choreographic method. This study employs a research-based creation method involving observation, interviews, literature review, documentation, data analysis, movement exploration, exploration of space-time-energy, property experimentation, rehearsal, and performance. The creation process reveals that the pattern of merantau can be structured into three dramatic parts: the encouragement to migrate, the ability to socialize and adapt in a new environment, and the longing for the homeland. These structures are embodied through movements derived from Minangkabau pencak silat, everyday gestures, shifting floor patterns, the use of sarong and white fabric, Minangkabau musical idioms, and religious expressions associated with the memory of the surau. The article argues that merantau can be understood not only as social mobility but also as a creative method for producing contemporary dance based on tradition.
