Abstract

This study aims to determine the development of the Kuda Kepang Dance as a medium for cultural tourism promotion in Kepahiang Regency, Bengkulu Province. This research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive analysis approach. The results indicate that the Kuda Kepang dance was introduced to Kepahiang Regency in the 1930s through the Javanese transmigration program during the Dutch colonial era. Since 2023, the dance has undergone significant development led by choreographer Eigmal, who implemented creative reconstructions and innovations across movement elements, musical accompaniment, dancers, makeup, costumes, properties, floor patterns, and performance venues. Despite these modern modifications to suit contemporary entertainment and aesthetic demands, the Kuda Kepang dance preserves its core values and traditional roots. Furthermore, the dance effectively serves as a promotional tool for regional cultural tourism in collaboration with Kepahiang's natural tourism potential, while simultaneously fulfilling social, entertainment, cultural identity, and economic functions for the local community.

Abstract

This study aims to examine and describe the development of the Tirik Lalan Dance among the Banjar community in Tembilahan, Riau Province. Tirik Lalan Dance is a traditional paired dance characteristic of the Banjar ethnic group who migrated to Tembilahan through trade routes. Over time, this dance has undergone choreographic development due to interaction with the local Malay culture. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive analytical approach, and is analyzed using the Cultural Development Theory by Linton, the Cultural Ecology Theory by Steward, and the Choreography Theory by Y. Sumandio Hadi. Data was collected through literature study, observation at Sanggar Citra Sebati, in-depth interviews with traditional artists, and documentation. The results of this study show that development occurred in three main elements of presentation, namely movement, music, and costume. The movements that were originally straightforward and open as typical of Banjar developed into more subtle, closed, and symbolic forms, adapting to Islamic values and Malay aesthetics, such as the integration of Malay salutation and soft steps resembling Zapin. The accompanying music developed with variations of the gambus and accordion. Meanwhile, the dancers' costumes transitioned from Baju Kurung Basisit to Kebaya Labuh and Songket with Pucuk Rebung motifs. This development proves a dynamic cultural adaptation without eliminating the original philosophical values of the dance.

The Arab-Malay Zapin is a performing art resulting from the cultural interaction between Arab and Malay traditions, carrying strong historical, aesthetic, and religious values within the Pelayangan community. The aim of this research is to analyze the creative strategies employed by the community to preserve and further develop the dance so that it remains relevant within contemporary cultural contexts. This study utilizes a qualitative approach with data collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. The analysis is based on theories of creativity and dance form. The findings show that the Arra’sye Pelayangan community has introduced innovations in movement structure, floor patterns, musical accompaniment, costumes, and performance presentation while maintaining the authenticity of traditional values. The community also ensures regeneration through regular training and by involving local youth in various performances. Additionally, contemporary adaptations in aesthetics and staging are implemented to enhance the appeal of the dance to younger audiences. These creative efforts demonstrate that traditional performing arts can continue to grow through a balanced approach that integrates cultural preservation with contemporary artistic needs.
