Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to identify the levels of digital literacy, problem-solving skills, and socio-cultural awareness among prospective biology teachers. A cross-sectional survey method was employed. Data were collected through the distribution of a closed-ended questionnaire on February 10, 2023. The questionnaire used a Likert scale, with each item scored on a range from 1 to 5. The digital literacy questionnaire consisted of 20 items, the problem-solving skills questionnaire comprised 24 items, and the socio-cultural awareness questionnaire included 15 items. The questionnaires were distributed to biology education students from four universities in Bali: Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha, Universitas Mahasaraswati Denpasar, Universitas PGRI Mahadewa Indonesia, and IKIP Saraswati. Respondents were selected using purposive sampling, based on specific criteria relevant to the research objectives. The research instruments were developed based on the aspects and indicators of 21st-century skills proposed by Greenstein. The collected data were then analyzed descriptively to address the research questions. The findings of the study are as follows: students' digital literacy falls within the intermediate category; their problem-solving skills are at the basic level; and their socio-cultural awareness is also categorized as intermediate. It is necessary to develop alternative learning programs that enhance students' digital literacy, problem-solving abilities, and socio-cultural awareness. One potential approach is project-based learning that directly integrates technology use and addresses real-life issues at both local and global levels.

Abstract

The Sumba tribe is a local community that inhabits Sumba Island, one of which is in Central Sumba Regency. The majority of the people of the Sumba Tribe still have close interactions with nature, one of which is still using plants used for traditional medicine. This traditional medicine has been carried out for a long time and has become a tradition passed down from generation to generation in the customs of the Sumba people. This study aims to determine the diversity of plant species used for medicine by the Sumba people, the Use Value Index per species (UVs), and the Index of Cultural Significance (ICS) of medicinal plants in Central Sumba Regency. This study used the snowball sampling method by conducting open-ended interviews. The results of this study have found a diversity of plants that have potential as medicine. It is known that there are 116 species of medicinal plants used by the people of the Sumba tribe for medication. Medicinal plants can be found in the yard of the house. Based on the analysis of UVs, it was found that the species with the highest use value (Andrographis paniculata Ness), had the highest UVs (5.60), while for the ICS analysis, papaya (Carica papaya L.) had the highest ICS value (850).

Abstract

Background: The shift toward a student-centered educational paradigm in the 21st century requires the use of effective digital learning media to enhance students’ ownership of learning and collaboration skills. However, challenges such as low learning motivation, limited student engagement, and the underutilization of diverse learning media remain evident in the Plant Physiology course within Biology Education programs. Aims: This study aims to analyze the need for digital learning media that can enhance students’ ownership of learning and collaboration skills in the Plant Physiology course. Methods: This study employed a quantitative descriptive research design involving 42 undergraduate students and 4 lecturers from the Biology Education program. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and document analysis of the Course Syllabus (RPS) and Lesson Plans (SAP). The collected data were analyzed descriptively to evaluate the extent to which existing learning media support ownership of learning and collaboration skills. Results: The findings reveal that PowerPoint is the most dominant learning medium used, with a usage rate of 58.6%, followed by teaching modules at 21.4% and learning videos at 15.7%. The use of academic articles is very limited, with only 4.3% utilization. Students’ ownership of learning is generally categorized as good, with an average score of 78.4%; however, the indicators of goal orientation and self-direction remain relatively low at 69.64%. Collaboration skills demonstrate a positive average score of 84.66%, yet several indicators have not reached optimal levels. Conclusion: The study concludes that learning in the Plant Physiology course still relies heavily on conventional digital media. Although ownership of learning and collaboration skills show positive trends, they are not yet optimal. These findings emphasize the need to develop innovative digital learning media to strengthen students’ ownership of learning and collaboration skills.
