Abstract

Synthesis and Characterization of TiO2 Coated on Clay Pillared Alumina (PILC) for Methyl Orange Photodegradation Under UV Illumination. The synthesis included both pillarization the clay with alumina and TiO2 coated on PILC using impregnation method. Some characterizations also were employed to this research such as X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), N2 Adsorption Isotherm and UV-Visible Diffuse Reflectance (DR UV). The photocatalyst was then used to decompose waste dye, methyl orange (MO). Among three photocatalysts that were successfully synthesized, PILC Ti 1.0% had the highest activity to decompose the waste dye.

Abstract

The synthesis of mesoporous silica as a delivery agent for the ethyl para-methoxycinnamate has been carried out. The study aims to determine the process of mesoporous silica synthesis from sodium silicate from the smelting of rice husk ash, determine the adsorption capacity of mesoporous silica in the ethyl para-methoxycinnamate and the pH responsive release of ethyl para-methoxycinnamate with mesoporous silica as a delivery agent in simulated intestinal and gastric fluids. It was found that mesoporous silica can be synthesized from rice husk ash with a 30% tartaric acid template. Characterization of mesoporous silica using FTIR spectroscopy showed the presence of silanol (Si-OH) and siloxane (Si-O-Si) functional groups. Mesoporous silica from rice husk ash is able as adsorbent for the ethyl para-methoxycinnamate with the adsorption capacity of 8.26 mg/g. The release test of gastric simulation fluid (pH 1.2) showed that the ethyl-para-methoxycinnamate was released from silica for a period of 12 hours. In the intestinal simulation fluid (pH 7.4), the release of the ethyl para-methoxycinnamate occurred slowly at the first hour, then gradually increased at 5 hour up to 12 hour.

Abstract

The corrosion inhibition performance of benzimidazole and its derivatives have been studied by density functional theory DFT in aqueous medium. For this investigation, the corrosion inhibition efficiencies of the protonated and non-protonated spesies of benzimidazole and its derivatives were investigated. The ionization potential of the inhibitors has a strong influence on the efficiency of corrosion inhibitors. The linear correlation was shown between electronic properties and corrosion inhibition efficiency. Electron donating substituents increase the corrosion inhibition efficiency, whereas electron withdrawing substituents give the opposite effect. The NH2 substituent contributes highest, whereas NO2 provides the weakest contribution to the corrosion inhibition efficiency for both non-protonated and protonated species of inhibitors.

Abstract

Biodiesel is a renewable and environmentally friendly energy source. The process of using a homogeneous catalyst has several disadvantages, such as: removing a lot of waste water from washing the catalyst residue and cannot be reused. This catalyst is also low in corrosion and is more environmentally friendly. The purpose of this study was to study the preparation of heterogeneous catalysts from pearl shells applied to the cooking oil esterification reaction. The oil was then characterized by the XRD, XRF, SEM, and FTIR. The results of GCMS for reaction without catalysts yield only 27.07% by weight of alkyl ester, whereas using a catalyst is 93.4%. The influence of time, in the 60th minute, was the optimal time for the esterification reaction, and the effect of the weight of the catalyst which was 1% the optimal weight. This shows that pearl oyster shell catalyst can act as an esterification catalyst for used cooking oil and can be used as an alternative to a homogeneous catalyst substitute catalyst.

Abstract

In the industrial era 4.0, it is expected that the technology-based education system can be realized specifically in chemistry. One alternative in improving understanding and interest in chemistry is by ChemDraw and Avogadro applications. This research was conducted by providing training to teachers and students of ChemDraw and Avogadro applications which before and after the field data was collected by questionnaire. Significant data shown by chemistry teachers in Lombok island are few who know ChemDraw and hardly know about Avogadro. The hardest part of learning chemistry is to imagine the structure and bond in the molecule. From this exercise programmed participants are able to draw molecules both 2D and 3D. In the end the participants can draw simple to supramolecular structures with ChemDraw and Avogadro applications. Hopefully this activity can function to increase students' interest in learning chemistry.

Abstract

Abstract

Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) is one of the most popular and commonly used petroleum-derived thermoplastics for packaging. The large production of LDPE has an environmental impact. Reducing production can be done by recycling LDPE (r-LDPE) and adding organic fibres as a filler that is easily decomposed. Cattle farming solid waste as a fibre source was mixed with r-LDPE with coupling agent maleic anhydride (MA). Before use, the cow manure was processed through a bleaching and hemicellulose removal process, which resulted in Cow Manure Fiber (CMF). The CMF was analyzed using FTIR spectroscopy and microscopic fibre dimension analysis. The FTIR results showed peaks at wavenumbers 3538 and 1056 cm-1, representing the -OH, -C-O and -CH functional groups from the cellulose structure. The resulting composites were tested for physical properties, including elastic modulus, yield stress, and elongation. Pure LDPE material was also used for comparison. The best physical properties of the composites were obtained by composites with 95% r-LDPE, 5% CMF, and 2% MA.
