Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate what types and what is mostly found of lexical cohesion in the news article. Written texts are different from spoken interaction. To make the readers know what the writers mean, the writers should compose a well formed of the text. Cohesion is an aspect of a text, which entails that the letter forms a unified whole, rather than unrelated sentences. Cohesion plays a special role in the creation of text. There are two main types of cohesion there are grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion. Grammatical cohesion consist of reference, ellipsis, substitution and conjunction, whereas lexical cohesion has two aspects, they are reiteration and collocation. Lexical cohesion refers to the way related words are chosen to link elements of a text. This study used qualitative research as the research method. Based on the result of this study, it can be concluded that there are six types of lexical cohesion and the types of lexical cohesion which is mostly used by the writer is repetition but this article is lack of antonym. And the use of lexical cohesion in writing a text can deliver the meaning of whole text itself for the readers easily and clearly.

Abstract

The objective of this research entitled “IMPROVING ENGLISH VOCABULARY BY USING TOTAL PHYSICAL RESPONSE (TPR) METHOD TO THE FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SDN PASIRKALIKI 1 CIMAHI” was to find out whether or not teaching English Vocabulary using Total Physical Response Method was effective to improve the students’ vocabulary ability. The research used quantitative method and one group pretest-posttest design. The population of this research was 31 of the fifth grade elementary school while the sample was entire population. They are consisted of 31 students. The data of this research were collected by giving pretest and posttest to the subject. The collected data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The results of the data analysis showed that: the mean score of pretest was 44.61, the mean score of posttest was 44.83, the tobs was 2.442, the tcritical value at the significance level 0.05 with degree of freedom (df) 30 was 2.042. Based on the data analysis above, the alternative hypothesis was accepted because the tobs was higher than t critical (2.442>2.042). It also meant that improving English vocabulary using Total Physical Response Method was effective to improve the students’ vocabulary ability. Keywords: Vocabulary, Total Physical Response Method

Abstract

Thematic progression is important in coherence to be considered as good text. So, it needs the element of thematic progression or it can be called theme and rheme. Theme and rheme constitutes the main part of clause, because comprehending the thematic progression may help to understand whole clause.  The coherence text should also be necessary written by students in senior high school in Batujajar. This investigation is conducted to consider the thematic progression and coherence in descriptive text. The purpose of this research is to identify types of thematic progression in students’ descriptive text and the levels of coherence in students’ descriptive text. The researchers use descriptive quantitative method.. The data are all clauses from paragraphs on text. The result of the result shows that there are two of three models of thematic progression found, namely zig-zag theme and re-iteretion. In addition, the finding also found that  there are three level coherence in every students’ descriptive text such as a good, fair, and less levels coherence.

Abstract

This research discussed mood type analysis in script conveyed by Kim Nam Joon, better known under his performing name RM, leader of BTS (Bangtan Boys) at the United Nation about UN’s Youth 2030 strategy. BTS get chosen as a UNICEF ambassador to front the “Love Myself” campaign in November 2018, which was part of UNICEF’s #ENDviolencecampaign. The objectives of this research are to identify the mood type and describe the interpretation of mood types. The researcher collected the data from The UNICEF website to get the script of the speech and this research used a qualitative descriptive method, which means the researcher analyzed the script. The speech consist of 719 words and 73 clauses, from the data, the researcher found three kinds of the mood types in this script, there are 63declarative, 3 interrogative, and 7Imperative. Abstract

This study aimed to find out the use of personal and spatial deixis on the song lyrics of “Sunday Best” by Surfaces, and also to describe the meaning of this song. This study used the qualitative method. The writer used document analysis as the instrument of this study, while the data collection techniques that have been conducted listened to that music, collecting that song lyrics script on the internet, then analyzing the use of personal and spatial deixis on that song. The results of this study showed that personal deixis became the dominant type of spatial deixis. There are 30 data of personal deixis consisting of first, second, and third person deixis. Meanwhile, the writer only found 6 data of spatial deixis. The meaning has been found after the writer listened to this song and analyzed it using personal and spatial deixis. The writer notes that by using personal and spatial deixis it will make easily to catch the reference meaning that include who, where and why the utterance is uttered. Keywords:  Pragmatics, Deixis, Song Lyrics

Abstract

This study entitled “Method to Post-method Pedagogy Administered by a Classroom Teacher in the Teaching of English” intends to portray the teaching method and methodology used by the teacher in the teaching of English at the tenth grade of a senior high school in Bandung.  Looking at the purpose, it is obvious that the present study is descriptive in nature.  This study is guided by three research questions covering: 1) what is the expected method used by the teacher in the teaching process? 2) Do the procedures of the expected method conform to its theoretical principles? 3) What methodology is actually practiced by the teacher in the teaching process?  The data for this study were compiled through classroom visits. To attain comprehensive and accurate information about the teaching methods used by the classroom English teachers, this study utilized two techniques namely videotaping and document analysis. The study found out that: 1) the expected method, which is claimed to follow by the classroom English teacher is the Grammar Translation Method or GTM; nevertheless 2) The procedures of GTM conducted by the teacher are not exactly conforming to the principles of this expected method; 3) the methodology, which is actually practiced by the teacher in the classroom belongs to Language-centered method of which its principles characterize the actual procedures.  This study concludes that though the teacher claims that she uses the grammar translation method, as the method proposed by theorist, but the procedures that she actually conducted are in line with the various principles taken from several methods.

Abstract

This review examines three Alwasilah’s books entitled: 1) Pokoknya Sunda: Interpretasi untuk Aksi; 2) Pokoknya Rekayasa Literasi; and 3) Language, Culture, and Education: A Portrait of Contemporary Indonesia.  The reviewer endeavors to evaluate the author’s point of view and the contents of the books supported by a set of extant theories dealing with the similar issues.  These books are designed as a set of foundations and learning materials of some subjects taught by the author. The author explores the insight concerning various contemporary issues dealing with policy, literacy, language as well as culture and education in this beloved country, Indonesia.

Abstract

This study intends to portray whether or not the teacher is developing learners’pragmatic competence in the teaching of English at the tenth grade of a seniorhigh school in southern Bandung. This study is descriptive in nature guided bytwo research questions covering: 1) What method is used by the teacher in theteaching of English?, and 2) Does the method indicate the teacher’s awarenessin developing learners’ pragmatic competence? The data for this study werecompiled through classroom observation. The study found out that thelanguage-centered method used by the teacher does not indicate the teacher’sawareness in developing learners’ pragmatic competence, since such a methodonly focuses on linguistic forms or grammatical structures. This method seeksto provide opportunities for learners to practice pre-selected, pre-sequencedlinguistic structure through form-focused exercises in class. This studyconcludes that the teacher’s activities are not aimed at raising students’pragmatic competence or offering opportunities for communicative practice.She does not have any effort to equip her students with the necessary knowledgeto enable them to use the target language appropriately. Thus, the teacher tendsto be unaware of developing learners’ pragmatic competence in the teaching ofEnglish.KEYWORDS: awareness, teaching, pragmatic competence

Abstract

Based on the phenomena that students have difficulties in writing descriptive text, students could not write because the students do not have any ideas when they areasked to write. So, they need some ways which could help them in writing. The problems in writing can be solved by implementing some strategies in teaching writing. One of approach that teacher can use to help students write a good text is GBA. The main objective of this study is find out if GBA can improve students’ ability in writing descriptive text. The research method used is quantitative research, or more specifically quantitative with one group pretest-posttest design. Pretest was given before the students received treatment and posttest was given after students received the treatment. The sample is one class (VIII Al Quds) in SMP ISLAM TERPADU FITRAH INSANI and test as the instrument. Data analysis shows that the observed value of t  (9.474) is bigger than the critical value of t(2.07). GBA has a significant impact on improving students’ ability in writing descriptive text. The teacher should apply the GBA as the alternative for teaching writing descriptive text.              Keywords: Improving, Writing, Descriptive text, and Genre Based Approach

Abstract

The aims of this research are to find out the class situation and to know the advancement of students’ ability in the application of teaching writing narrative text by means of picture series. In the classroom, students frequently gripe and say if the teacher grants them the task to write in English, they could not do it even when there have not begun yet. They do not have self-confident, feeling afraid of doing wrong, do not know what to scribe and way to get started. For those reasons the teacher conducted Classroom Action Research through picture series, such as Cinderella and The Three Little Pigs as a medium of teaching Narrative Text. In collecting data, researchers used interview and test. The test is done before the action (pre-test) or cycle I and after the action (post-test) or cycle II. The outcome of the study show that which exists positive improvement in students' writing skills and classroom situation during teaching and studying process. Test results increased, from the initial test (done before the action) to posttests (done after the action). That the average value of the test outcome is 74. The highest value acquisition of disciples in the early condition is 80, and the lowest worth is 70. While in cycle II (final condition) the average value of students increases to 90, after the teacher uses media images, the highest score of disciples in the final condition is 94, and the lowest score is 88.
