Abstract

Introduction: The increasing market demand for herbal medicines causes an increase in the demand for medicinal plants to meet the raw materials for herbal medicines. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the productivity of turmeric, especially on Madura Island, one of which is by taking a morphological approach to turmeric rhizomes to determine the differences in characters and also the yield of simplicia in Bangkalan Regency. This study aims to identify the morphology and percentage of turmeric rhizome yield in two locations in Bangkalan District, namely Kamal District and Bangkalan District. Methods: This study uses a survey method conducted in two sub-districts in Bangkalan District, namely Kamal District and Bangkalan District which were determined by purposive sampling based on the initial purpose of the study. Turmeric samples were taken using the Snowball sampling method to determine the location or sample points totaling 3 locations. Results: The results showed that the morphological characters of turmeric in both Kamal and Bangkalan sub-districts had similar characteristics, starting from the leaves, pseudo-stems and roots. The highest yield was in Kamal District, which was 16.35%, while in Bangkalan District the highest yield was 16.38%. Conclusion: There are no significant differences in the morphological characters of turmeric in Kamal and Bangkalan sub-districts due to almost the same biotic, abiotic and altitude conditions.

Abstract

Vegetation indices are algorithms that represent aspects of vegetation such as leaf area index, biomass, and chlorophyll concentration. The index is thought to be used to determine chlorophyll and nitrogen content which makes it more effective and efficient. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between vegetation indices and chlorophyll and nitrogen content of corn leaves through a cloud computing platform. Vegetation indices were obtained from Sentinel 2A image processing with Google Earth Engine. Chlorophyll and nitrogen content were obtained from laboratory analysis. This study used 13 sample points in corn crop areas spread across Dlanggu, Bangsal, and Jatirejo sub-districts in Mojokerto district. The correlation test was used to determine the level of relationship between variables. The results showed that the vegetation index generated from image processing through GEE had no correlation with chlorophyll and nitrogen content from laboratory analysis. The weak correlation was thought to be due to atmospheric effects such as clouds, as well as climatic effects such as the rainy season and cloudy skies, which cause the calculation of vegetation indices to be disrupted. The dominant phase of the sample plants in the early generative phase and the possibility of errors in the analysis of chlorophyll and nitrogen content were thought to contribute to the lack of correlation in this study.

Abstract

Bojonegoro Regency is one of the rice-producing areas but is prone to drought, as occurred in 2019-2020. Remote sensing is a solution for mitigation and adaptation to reduce the impact of drought. The study aimed to determine the spatial and temporal distribution of drought in Bojonegoro Regency in 2023. This study utilizes GEE, a cloud-based computing platform used to analyze land cover parameters, rainfall, LST, NDVI, NDWI, and NDDI. The results showed that rainfall in Bojonegoro varies, with the highest levels occurring in January-March and the lowest levels, marking the peak of the drought, in July-September. The LST category is very high and evenly distributed across the entire region from July to December. The average NDVI values obtained from July to December fall into the moderate category, but in some locations, they fall into the low vegetation category. NDWI classification falls into the moderate category from July to December. Meanwhile, the peak of drought (NDDI) occurs from July to December. This study is useful for supporting drought mitigation and adaptation strategies for farmers in Bojonegoro Regency based on spatial and temporal patterns.

Abstract

Kaempferia rotunda L. is a traditional medicinal plant in Madura. This study aimed to evaluate the production and phytochemical variation of K. rotunda rhizomes from Madura Island and to determine the soil chemical factors associated with these traits. Plant materials and soil samples were collected from ex situ cultivation areas in Bangkalan, Sampang, Pamekasan, and Sumenep. Rhizome production, simplicia yield, extract yield, total phenolics, total tannins, total steroids, and soil nutrient contents were analyzed. The results showed substantial variation among accessions in both production and phytochemical contents. Primary rhizome weight was positively correlated with the number of secondary rhizomes, whereas secondary rhizome simplicia yield was positively correlated with total rhizome simplicia yield. Soil nutrients showed low-to-moderate correlations with production traits but strong correlations with phytochemical contents. Suitable accession selection combined with balanced macro- and micronutrient availability may improve rhizome yield and quality.
