Abstract

This research attempts to analyze the implementation of regional autonomy to the financial performance in newly-formed district government of North Sumatra. It focuses on the performance of original regional income after fiscal decentralization and the regional financial independency. The result shows that regional autonomy has a positive impact on the growth of original regional income. However, the share of those incomes to regional budget is still small. The newly-formed districts in North Sumatra are unready to face the regional autonomy policy. Most of the newly-formed regencies/municipalities are very dependent to balanced fund through General Allocation Fund and Special Allocation Fund. Keywords: regional autonomy, original regional income, fiscal decentralization.

Abstract

In attaining a sustainable economic growth, the government or the relevant au-thorities must not disregard social life of the society. Economic development must coincide with the social development of the society. This study will endeavor to investigate the socio-economic level of household in the state of Malacca by gathering information on 334 house-holds located in the District of Alor Gajah. The main objective of this study is to view the socioeconomic level for selected indicators such as income, education and health. The method of this study is by the issuance of questionnaires which conform to the needs of this study. The methodology employed in analyzing the data obtained is through descriptive analysis and econometric techniques especially in examining the relationship between social and economic variables. The result of the study shows that the Malay households control the income in the district and have a higher educational level compared to other ethnics relatively. The cost of education for household depends on the income level, the members in the household which are still studying and the ethnicity. The district’s households still prefer to obtain health ser-vices provided by the government and the degree of dependency decreased accordingly with an increase in income. Although, this study is limited to only few socioeconomic indicators, it still can be considered as an initial step for further studies to be made on socio economy in the state of Malacca. Keywords: socioeconomics, household, econometric analysis.

Abstract

This study investigates the existence of seasonality effect in Malaysia and its three neighboring markets− Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand– using a sample of 24 selected sectoral and broad indexes over the period of January 1988 to December 2005. This study also examines the influence of trading activity on the market anomaly by dividing the 18-year sample period into thin and active trading sub-periods. The existence of seasonality effect is revealed using a non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test, which later is verified using time-series regression. Considerable evidence in favor of February effect is obtained in Malaysia from the Mann-Whitney U tests in the full period and particularly in the active trading sub-period but it nearly disappears in the thin trading sub-period. While slight evidence of December effect is detected in Singapore and Indonesia, January effect is nearly non-existence in Thailand. In the meantime, the influence of trading activity on seasonality effect is only confined to the equity market of Malaysia. The results from time-series regressions are consistent with these findings. Given the fact that none of these emerging markets impose tax on capital gains, the existence of seasonality effect in month other than the tax-month provides additional evidence against the tax-loss selling hypothesis. Overall, the study concludes that while all except Thailand suggest the presence seasonality effect, from an investment perspective, only in the case of Malaysia the effect seems strong enough to command an exploitable strategy but even then, such rule should be of comfort only if applied in the active-trading period.   Keyword: Seasonality Effect; February Effect; Trading Activity; Emerging Markets

Abstract

Abstract

This paper addresses the relationship between Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and its determinants in Malaysia. The annual data for the period of 1970 to 1999 were employed in this study. The OLS regression is used to determine the relationship between FDI and its independent variables. The variables are estimated in the full model (Model I) and different sub-models (Model II, Model III and Model IV). Generally, the results indicate that there are at least four factors that may be used to predict the level of FDI in Malaysia. These variables are inflation rate, gross domestic product (GDP), import, and export are among the main determinants of FDI in Malaysia. Keywords: foreign direct investment, inflation rate, GDP, import, and export

Abstract

This study proposes to investigate the causality between exports and economic growth in the ASEAN countries over the periods 1966 –2000. The role of the export variable in the investigation of economic growth is emphasized. Using the Johansen cointegration procedures test indicate that there is cointegration between export and economic growth in Indonesia and Singapore, while the Granger causality test shows that there is feedback or bi-directional causality between exports and economic growth only in Indonesia and Philippines. Abstract

The aim of this paper is to investigate the statistical relationship between stock prices and exchange rates in ASEAN from 1993–2006. Using Engle-Granger test, it finds that the re-lationship between stock prices and exchange rates is characterized by a feedback system, with Singapore Dollar as the dominant exchange rate. Johansen co-integration test finds that all of the stock prices and exchange rates are co-integrated. The results are supported by Vector Autoregression and Vector Error Correction Models. With respect to the relationship between stock prices and exchange rates, the results are inconclusive. The causality mostly runs from exchange rates to stock prices.

Abstract

Abstract

This study investigates the substitution relationship (substitutability) between debt policy, insider ownership, and dividend policy as the agency problem control mechanism in Malaysia. If the substitution relationship exists between the agency control mechanisms, the agency problem can be reduced through this relationship. Reducing the agency problem as a result can increase the firm value proxied by Tobin’s Q. This study employs 396 firms sample listed on Malaysian Bourse from 2001 to 2004. To achieves the objectives, this study uses two-stage least square method. The results of this study indicate that the substitutability between debt policy, insider ownership, and dividend policy as agency problem control mechanism does not fully exist in Malaysia. Apparently the substitutability only exists for debt policy and dividend. There is no substitution between debt policy and insider ownership as well as between dividend policy and insider ownership. Key words: debt policy, insider ownership, dividend policy, agency problem, firm value

Abstract

This paper attempts to explore how TMT (Top Management Team) attributes interact with environment dimensions to influence organizational growth. Specifically, this study will examine environmental dimensions as a potentially important moderator of the association between TMT attributes and organizational growth. However, the overall findings provide mixed results for the hypotheses tested. The results of direct effect show that: (1) organizational growth exhibits a significant positive relationship with TMT tenure; (2) TMT functional heterogeneity is insignificant with no change in the variance of organizational growth; and (3) positive but insignificant relationship between industrial heterogeneity and organizational growth. Furthermore, the interaction effect results indicate that: (1) as munificence increases, the relationship between TMT tenure and organizational growth shows increasingly positive; (2) concentration, dynamism and munificence moderate the relationship between TMT functional heterogeneity and organizational growth; (3) finally, the interaction effect also provide mixed results, such: as environment concentration increases, the relationship between TMT industrial heterogeneity and organizational growth increases positively; by contrast, as environment dynamism increases, the relationship between TMT industrial heterogeneity and organizational growth increases negatively; while the interaction between TMT industrial heterogeneity and environment munificence is not significant to explain the organizational growth.Key words: Organization growth, environment, management team.
