Abstract

Correctional institutions are undergoing a transformative shift from punitive spaces to acknowledging the humanity of inmates. This study delves into Indonesian correctional facilities' religious-based coaching programs prioritizing inmate protection, reintegration, and dignity. Analyzing these through Islamic law and Maqasid al-sharahprinciples, it explores personality development models and identifies limitations in current approaches. While initial findings showcase positive outcomes—behavioural changes and reduced distress—the study highlights the predominance of lecture-based programs, signalling the need for more comprehensive Islamic law-based models. Different inmate categories, especially those in serious crimes, display varying spiritual indicator weights. Spiritual development correlates positively with behavioural adjustments. Overcapacity issues in certain facilities, like Salemba and Jakarta Women's Correctional Institutions, pose severe challenges—from limited resources to inadequate staff ratios and hindrances in providing proper medical and psychological support, notably impacting drug abuse victims. The study underscores the urgency of restorative justice in sentencing, emphasizing rehabilitation and societal reintegration.

Abstract

Science and religion are two important aspects that encompass human life. They complement each other within the individual, or conversely, they are at odds, demanding humans to choose between them. The latter stance characterizes the development of science in the modern era, where science becomes secular as it is solely based on the empirical and rational, while religion is not. In Islamic history, science and religion developed alongside each other. Islamic teachings often contain messages to observe the universe as a sign of the Creator's existence. Therefore, the development of science during the Islamic golden age was rapid. The issue of science and religion remains intriguing to study because modern science, which was initially hoped to solve human problems, has now become a problem for human life.

Abstract

This article reviews the book by David G. Myers titled “Intuition: Its Powers and Perils.” The book explains the existence of two influential schools of thought, rationalism emphasizing reason and empiricism focusing on sensory experience. Both have given rise to different disciplines of science. Rationalism, with its deductive method, has produced exact sciences, while empiricism, with its inductive method, has given birth to natural sciences. These two schools of thought—Rationalism and Empiricism—have shaped Western thinking for three centuries and have led to remarkable advances in science and technology.

Abstract

This paper explores the relationship between Sufi spirituality and modern problem-solving through an initial examination of Sufism's contributions in a contemporary context. Sufism, as the mystical dimension of Islam, offers a profound spiritual approach to addressing various life challenges. In the modern context, where complex issues such as alienation, identity crises, and materialism often disrupt mental and spiritual well-being, Sufi spirituality can provide significant alternatives. The paper investigates the core principles of Sufism, such as the emphasis on closeness to God, purification of the soul, and achieving inner balance, and how these principles can be applied to address various modern problems. Sufism teaches methods for attaining inner peace through spiritual practices such as dhikr (remembrance of God), contemplation, and self-discipline, which can help individuals cope with stress, anxiety, and dissatisfaction commonly experienced in modern life. The paper also highlights practical examples of how Sufi communities around the world have integrated their teachings with contemporary challenges and how they contribute to individual and social well-being. Through an analytical approach and case studies, this paper aims to provide insights into the potential of Sufi spirituality as an effective alternative for addressing modern issues and offers a foundation for further exploration of Sufism’s relevance and application in contemporary contexts.
