Abstract

Used cooking oil is obtained from the residue of the frying process, which has been used repeatedly where the fatty acids are increasingly saturated and the triglyceride content breaks down into volatile and non-volatile components that dissolve in oil. Used cooking oil waste can cause an increase in COD and BOD levels in waters, resulting in the death of aquatic biota. The aims of this study were (1) to determine the optimum contact time of activated charcoal d combination of citronella sticks on decreasing levels of free fatty acids, (2) to determine the optimum contact time of activated charcoal d combination of citronella sticks on decreasing peroxide numbers, (3) to determine the average percentage of free fatty acid reduction and peroxide value in the clarification of used cooking oil using activated coconut shell charcoal combined with lemongrass stems. This research method is a laboratory experiment with despising, neutralization, and bleaching stages. The results showed that the average decrease in optimum free fatty acid levels occurred at 60 minutes of contact time, namely A3 at 73.86%, B3 at 66.67%, and C3 at 82.74%. The average decrease in the optimum peroxide number occurred at a contact time of 60 minutes, namely A3 of 57.16%, B3 of 52.85%, and C3 of 49.68%. So, the coconut shell-activated charcoal combined with lemongrass stems effectively clarifies the used cooking oil. In the future, it is necessary to vary the absorbent particle size to improve the quality of the waste cooking oil so that it can be reused.

Abstract

The high consumption of cooking oil in daily life and food preparation both at the household level and in the food industry has resulted in an increasing amount of used cooking oil waste being produced. When the public is educated about the dangers of used cooking oil, there will be an increase in knowledge and awareness not to use used cooking oil again. However, this actually results in negative behavior in the community in managing used cooking oil waste which actually has a bad impact on the environment. This behavior includes used cooking waste from households that is thrown into the trash or thrown directly into the gutter. This can pollute the environment and if it is thrown into the dishwashing sink it will also clog the pipes. This behavior can be minimized by training in managing used cooking oil waste into decorative candles with economic value. This activity is carried out using counseling, demonstration and training methods. The result of this service activity is an increase in community skills in managing used cooking oil waste. So it is hoped that education and training like this can continue to be carried out

Abstract

The progress of the traditional gold mining industry has a positive impact on improving the quality of life of the people, but on the other hand the progress of this industry has a negative impact on the environment. Mercury contamination from traditional gold mining occurs when the processing takes place which results in the holding tank being full, so that the tailings overflow and flow into the river, especially if it rains, then mercury contamination occurs in the surrounding environment. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of a simple filtering device for activated coconut shell charcoal to reduce mercury levels in the waste water of the logs which included optimum contact time, optimum particle size, and optimum reuse. This type of research is True Experimental Design by providing treatment (contact time, particle size and repeated use of activated charcoal). It was concluded that the absorption of mercury waste with the highest efficiency value was activated charcoal particles measuring 35 mesh (0.5 mm) with an absorption percentage of 75.81%, the highest absorption percentage of mercury waste with a contact time of 180 minutes was 88.89%, and the optimal variation of the repetition of the use of activated charcoal is 5 times.

Abstract

The increase in dengue fever cases is influenced by the rainy season, which creates an ideal environment for the development of the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Furthermore, dengue fever can be caused by several behaviors that arise as a result of a lack of health education related to dengue fever, and a lack of community skills in utilizing natural ingredients as a substitute for chemical mosquito repellents. Therefore, it is necessary to empower mothers who are the frontline of family health to increase their knowledge and skills to protect their families from dengue fever. This activity aims to increase knowledge, skills, and motivation in preventing and handling the emergence of dengue fever. The method of this activity is education, training, and direct practice with target partners, namely the Family Welfare Movement (PKK) group. The results of this activity obtained an increase in knowledge from 12.5% with good knowledge to 90% with good knowledge, from 20% skilled to 85% skilled in making serute mosquito repellent. Therefore, it can be concluded that this partner empowerment activity is able to increase the knowledge and skills of the PKK group. Therefore, it is recommended that the PKK group actively encourage residents and cadres to utilize household kitchen ingredients to make natural mosquito repellents and continue to maintain the cleanliness of the house and environment to avoid dengue fever.
