Abstract

Abstract

Stroke is one of the leading causes of disability that requires long-term treatment and rehabilitation. In addition to medical treatment, complementary therapy is increasingly used by the community as supportive therapy for stroke patients. However, public understanding regarding the safety and benefits of complementary therapy is still varied. This study aimed to determine public perceptions regarding the safety and benefits of complementary therapy in stroke patients. This study used a quantitative descriptive design with a purposive sampling technique involving 60 respondents. Data were collected using questionnaires on public perceptions regarding the safety and benefits of complementary therapy in stroke patients. The complementary therapies discussed in this study included cupping therapy, massage, herbal therapy, acupressure, and other traditional therapies. The results showed that perceptions regarding the safety of complementary therapy were mostly in the sufficient category with 28 respondents (46.7%), while 21 respondents (35.0%) had good perceptions and 11 respondents (18.3%) had poor perceptions. Perceptions regarding the benefits of complementary therapy were also mostly in the sufficient category with 27 respondents (45.0%), while 24 respondents (40.0%) had good perceptions and 9 respondents (15.0%) had poor perceptions. Respondents stated that complementary therapy could help reduce muscle stiffness, improve relaxation, and increase comfort in stroke patients. However, some respondents still doubted the safety and effectiveness of complementary therapy due to limited information and understanding. The study concludes that public perceptions regarding the safety and benefits of complementary therapy in stroke patients are still varied. Therefore, health education from health workers, especially nurses, is needed to improve public understanding regarding the safe and appropriate use of complementary therapy in stroke patients.

Abstract

Disasters are events that can threaten human life and cause physical, psychological, and environmental impacts. Indonesia, including Central Kalimantan, is one of the regions vulnerable to disasters such as floods, forest and land fires, and extreme weather. Lack of disaster preparedness among students can increase the risk of panic, injury, and inappropriate response during emergency situations at school. Therefore, knowledge about disaster preparedness is important to improve students’ readiness in facing disasters. This study aimed to determine the relationship between knowledge and students’ preparedness in facing disasters at a senior high school in Central Kalimantan. This research used a quantitative design with a cross sectional approach. The study was conducted in February 2026 involving 60 respondents selected using simple random sampling. Data were collected using knowledge and disaster preparedness questionnaires. Data analysis was performed using univariate and bivariate analysis with the Spearman Rank test. The results showed that most respondents had good knowledge (53.3%) and were categorized as prepared in facing disasters (63.3%). Statistical analysis showed a significant relationship between knowledge and disaster preparedness with a p-value of 0.001 (<0.05). Students with better knowledge tended to have higher preparedness in dealing with disaster situations. The study concludes that knowledge has an important role in improving students’ disaster preparedness. Continuous disaster education and simulation programs are needed to support disaster-resilient schools and improve students’ readiness in emergency situations.

Abstract

The use of natural ingredients in traditional medicine practices is still commonly found in various regions of Indonesia. One such practice is the topical application of corn (Zea mays) to treat chickenpox. This study aimed to explore the practice and public as well as health professionals’ perceptions toward this treatment. The research was conducted in Arut Selatan District, Kotawaringin Barat Regency, Central Kalimantan, using a qualitative descriptive case study approach. A total of 48 respondents participated in this study, consisting of 43 community members (users and family) and 5 health workers. Data were collected through face-to-face and online interviews and analyzed thematically. The findings indicate that the practice continues due to beliefs in its ability to accelerate healing, reduce itching and heat, and is rooted in generational experience. Symbolic beliefs, such as the notion that corn must be “stolen” to be effective, were also reported. Meanwhile, health workers expressed varying perspectives—from being unaware of the practice to expressing concern about infection risks if applied without medical supervision. This study highlights the need for culturally sensitive educational approaches that integrate local traditional values with modern medical safety principles, promoting holistic and contextual healthcare practices.
